Assessment of operational reliability of quarry excavator-dump truck complexes
The method proposed in the article is based on the mathematical apparatus for quantitative assessment of the reliability of majority schemes of structural redundancy of transport processes, which provide the availability and usage of several backup delivery channels in the transport process in case of any malfunction. The principle of multi-channel haulage is commonly used in quarries for transportation of overburden and minerals from benches by dump trucks, when excavators and dump trucks performing cyclic operations function as a single excavator-dump truck complex. This pattern of work significantly increases the likelihood of fulfilling the daily plan for transporting rock mass due to the redistribution of dump trucks between mining and overburden excavators in the event of failure of one or more units of mining and handling equipment.
The reliability of excavator-dump truck complexes is assessed in three stages: initial data collection for mathematical modeling of excavator-dump truck complex performance; solving the problem of optimizing the distribution of dump trucks between excavators, ensuring maximum productivity of the excavator-dump truck complex; assessment of the reliability of its work depending on the probability of fulfilling the daily plan for the transportation of rock mass.
The proposed method is implemented as part of a computer program and makes it possible to automate the operational management of the process of transporting rock mass in a quarry using a mobile application. The developed guidelines can be used for any quarries with automobile transport, regardless of the type of mineral extracted, the mining method, the loading pattern, the capacity of the excavation and loading equipment fleet, and the capacity of operated dump trucks

Identity of electrons and ionization equilibrium
It is perhaps appropriate that, in a year marking the 90th anniversary of
Meghnad Saha seminal paper (1920), new developments should call fresh attention
to the problem of ionization equilibrium in gases. Ionization equilibrium is
considered in the simplest "physical" model for an electronic subsystem of
matter in a rarefied state, consisting of one localized electronic state in
each nucleus and delocalized electronic states considered as free ones. It is
shown that, despite the qualitative agreement, there is a significant
quantitative difference from the results of applying the Saha formula to the
degree of ionization. This is caused by the fact that the Saha formula
corresponds to the "chemical" model of matter.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
The Determination of Metals in Welding Fume by X-Ray-Spectrometry
Analysis of the current hygienic situation in the welding production showed that the intensification of welding processes involves the deterioration of air quality, which negatively affects the welders health. Respiratory effects seen in full-time welders have included bronchitis, airway irritation, lung function changes, and a possible increase in the incidence of lung cancer. The metal concentration in the air of the working area have been determined using the photometric method of analysis, which involves the stage of decomposition of the sample material before analysis. However, losses of the analyzed elements are possible when the sample is decomposed. The X-ray fluorescence method of analysis has the advantage of being nondestructive. The investigations shown the data of photometric determination of metals in welding aerosols is 1.5(-:)2 times lower than the results of X-ray fluorescence analysis
The effect of telomerase template antagonist GRN163L on Bone-Marrow-Derived rat mMesenchymal stem cells is reversible and associated with altered expression of cyclin d1, cdk4 and cdk6
Telomerase activity is essential for the continued growth and survival of malignant cells, therefore inhibition of this activity presents an attractive target for anti-cancer therapy. The telomerase inhibitor GRN163L, was shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) also show telomerase activity in maintaining their self-renewal; therefore the effects of telomerase inhibitors on MSCs may be an issue of concern. MSCs are multipotent cells and are important for the homeostasis of the organism. In this study, we sought to demonstrate in vitro effects of GRN163L on rat MSCs. When MSCs were treated with 1 μM GRN163L, their phenotype changed from spindle-shaped cells to rounded ones and detached from the plate surface, similar to cancer cells. Quantitative-RT-PCR and immunoblotting results revealed that GRN163L holds MSCs at the G1 state of the cell cycle, with a drastic decrease in mRNA and protein levels of cyclin D1 and its cdk counterparts, cdk4 and cdk6. This effect was not observed when MSCs were treated with a mismatch control oligonucleotide. One week after GRN163L was removed, mRNA and protein expressions of the genes, as well as the phenotype of MSCs returned to those of untreated cells. Therefore, we concluded that GRN163L does not interfere with the self-renewal and differentiation of MSCs under short term in vitro culture conditions. Our study provides additional support for treating cancers by administrating GRN163L without depleting the body's stem cell pools. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC

Quantum oscillations of nitrogen atoms in uranium nitride
The vibrational excitations of crystalline solids corresponding to acoustic
or optic one phonon modes appear as sharp features in measurements such as
neutron spectroscopy. In contrast, many-phonon excitations generally produce a
complicated, weak, and featureless response. Here we present time-of-flight
neutron scattering measurements for the binary solid uranium nitride (UN),
showing well-defined, equally-spaced, high energy vibrational modes in addition
to the usual phonons. The spectrum is that of a single atom, isotropic quantum
harmonic oscillator and characterizes independent motions of light nitrogen
atoms, each found in an octahedral cage of heavy uranium atoms. This is an
unexpected and beautiful experimental realization of one of the fundamental,
exactly-solvable problems in quantum mechanics. There are also practical
implications, as the oscillator modes must be accounted for in the design of
generation IV nuclear reactors that plan to use UN as a fuel.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Nature Communications,

Field- and irradiation-induced phenomena in memristive nanomaterials
The breakthrough in electronics and information technology is anticipated by the development of emerging memory and logic devices, artificial neural networks and brain-inspired systems on the basis of memristive nano-materials represented, in a particular case, by a simple 'metal-insulator-metal' (MIM) thin-film structure. The present article is focused on the comparative analysis of MIM devices based on oxides with dominating ionic (ZrOx, HfOx) and covalent (SiOx, GeOx) bonding of various composition and geometry deposited by magnetron sputtering. The studied memristive devices demonstrate reproducible change in their resistance (resistive switching - RS) originated from the formation and rupture of conductive pathways (filaments) in oxide films due to the electric-field-driven migration of oxygen vacancies and/or mobile oxygen ions. It is shown that, for both ionic and covalent oxides under study, the RS behaviour depends only weakly on the oxide film composition and thickness, device geometry (down to a device size of about 20x20 mu m(2)). The devices under study are found to be tolerant to ion irradiation that reproduces the effect of extreme fluences of high-energy protons and fast neutrons. This common behaviour of RS is explained by the localized nature of the redox processes in a nanoscale switching oxide volume. Adaptive (synaptic) change of resistive states of memristive devices is demonstrated under the action of single or repeated electrical pulses, as well as in a simple model of coupled (synchronized) neuron-like generators. It is concluded that the noise-induced phenomena cannot be neglected in the consideration of a memristive device as a nonlinear system. The dynamic response of a memristive device to periodic signals of complex waveform can be predicted and tailored from the viewpoint of stochastic resonance concept.
