Adaptive weight estimator for quantum error correction
Quantum error correction of a surface code or repetition code requires the
pairwise matching of error events in a space-time graph of qubit measurements,
such that the total weight of the matching is minimized. The input weights
follow from a physical model of the error processes that affect the qubits.
This approach becomes problematic if the system has sources of error that
change over time. Here we show how the weights can be determined from the
measured data in the absence of an error model. The resulting adaptive decoder
performs well in a time-dependent environment, provided that the characteristic
time scale of the variations is greater than , with the duration of one error-correction cycle and
the typical error probability per qubit in one cycle.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Unipotent class representatives for finite classical groups
We describe explicitly representatives of the conjugacy classes of unipotent elements of the finite classical groups
Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes as Shadow Masks for Nanogap Fabrication
We describe a technique for fabricating nanometer-scale gaps in Pt wires on
insulating substrates, using individual single-walled carbon nanotubes as
shadow masks during metal deposition. More than 80% of the devices display
current-voltage dependencies characteristic of direct electron tunneling. Fits
to the current-voltage data yield gap widths in the 0.8-2.3 nm range for these
devices, dimensions that are well suited for single-molecule transport
measurements
Who are Non-Resident Fathers?: A British Socio-Demographic Profile
Despite international growth of, and policy interest in, divorce and separation since the 1970s, there is still surprisingly little known about non-residential fatherhood. This paper presents a 'father-centric' analysis and provides one of the first profiles of non-residential fatherhood in early millennium UK. Using data from Understanding Society Wave 1, a nationally representative survey of over 30,000 households in the UK, we found 1,070 men self-identifying as having a non-resident child under 16 years old (https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk). We estimate a prevalence of 5 per cent of British men having a non-resident dependent child. Through latent class analysis, four distinct groups of non-resident fathers are identified: 'Engaged' fathers, 'Less Engaged' fathers, 'Disengaged' fathers and 'Distance' fathers. Our analysis finds that non-resident fathers form a heterogeneous group in terms of their socio-demographic profile and family behaviour. It is recommended that legislation and policy concerning fathers in post-separation families are sensitive to variation as well as commonality in socio-economic conditions and family lives and situations
Swift observations of the 2006 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi: II. 1D hydrodynamical models of wind driven shocks
Following the early Swift X-ray observations of the latest outburst of the
recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi in February 2006 (Paper I), we present new 1D
hydrodynamical models of the system which take into account all three phases of
the remnant evolution. The models suggest a novel way of modelling the system
by treating the outburst as a sudden increase then decrease in wind mass-loss
rate and velocity. The differences between this wind model and previous
Primakoff-type simulations are described. A more complex structure, even in 1D,
is revealed through the presence of both forward and reverse shocks, with a
separating contact discontinuity. The effects of radiative cooling are
investigated and key outburst parameters such as mass-loss rate, ejecta
velocity and mass are varied. The shock velocities as a function of time are
compared to the ones derived in Paper I. We show how the manner in which the
matter is ejected controls the evolution of the shock and that for a
well-cooled remnant, the shock deceleration rate depends on the amount of
energy that is radiated away.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Britain's slow movement to a Gender Egalitarian Equilibrium: Parents and Employment in the UK 2001 - 2013
This paper examines the working lives of British couple families across the first decade of the
millennium using EU Labour Force Survey data (2001-2013) taking a multiple equilibria approach
(Esping-Andersen and Billari, 2015). We identify a growth in dual full-time earners, increased
working hours of mothers in part-time employment and a growing proportion of households with
‘non-standard’ working patterns, suggesting both a convergence and greater diversity in economic
provisioning within parent couple households. We find that household employment patterns remain
strongly associated with maternal education and family size but are becoming less sensitive to the
age of youngest child. The dual full-time earner model is growing in significance for British parents
of young children but a new gender egalitarian equilibrium has not yet been reached
