    Intimate partner violence in urban Pakistan: prevalence, frequency, and risk factors

Population-based data on IPV from Muslim societies are scarce, and Pakistan is no exception. This study was conducted among women residing in urban Karachi, to estimate the prevalence and frequency of different forms of IPV and their associations with sociodemographic factors.Methods: This cross-sectional community-based study was conducted using a structured questionnaire developed by the World Health Organisation for research on violence. Community midwives conducted face-to-face interviews with 759 married women aged 25–60 years.Results: Self-reported past-year and lifetime prevalence of physical violence was 56.3 and 57.6%, respectively; the corresponding figures for sexual violence were 53.4% and 54.5%, and for psychological abuse were 81.8% and 83.6%. Violent incidents were mostly reported to have occurred on more than three occasions during the lifetime. Risk factors for physical violence related mainly to the husband, his low educational attainment, unskilled worker status, and five or more family members living in one household. For sexual violence, the risk factors were the respondent’s low educational attainment, low socioeconomic status of the family, and five or more family members in one household. For psychological violence, the risk factors were the husband being an unskilled worker and low socioeconomic status of the family.Conclusion: Repeated violence perpetrated by a husband towards his wife is an extremely common phenomenon in Karachi, Pakistan. Indifference to this type of violence against women stems from the attitude that IPV is a private matter, usually considered a justifiable response to misbehavior on the part of the wife. These findings point to serious violations of women’s rights and require the immediate attention of health professionals and policymakers.Keywords: intimate partner violence, domestic violence, Pakistan, gender inequality, prevalence, frequency, risk factor

    The response of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L) genotypes to callus induction, regeneration and different concentrations of the selective agent (geneticin -418)

    Two commercial cultivars (CPF-245 and CPF-237) and three advanced lines (CSSG-668, S-2003US633, S-2003US114) of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarium) grown in Punjab, Pakistan were evaluated for their potential to induce callus, embryogenic callus and regeneration. Cultivar CSSG-668 was found to be the best genotype yielding maximum embryogenic callus and regeneration whereas cultivar CPF- 245 exhibited lowest callus induction frequency. Five different concentrations (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80mg/L) of the selective agent (geneticin-418) were used to optimize selection conditions with nontransformed embryogenic calli. The geneticin concentration 60 mg/L was found to be the optimal dose to select the embryogenic calli of genotypes CSSG-668, CPF-245 and S-2003US63, while 35 mg/L geneticin was found to be the best concentration for S-2003US-114. Similarly, 60 mg/L geneticin was optimum dose to select regenerated plantlets of the cultivars CSSG-668 and CPF-245 while it was 40, 25 mg/L for the cultivars S-2003US-114 and S-2003US-633, respectively. It is concluded from the present study that geneticin concentration in the range of 25 to 60 mg/L can be effectively used for the selection of transformed embryogenic calli and regenerants of different sugarcane cultivars.Keywords: Callus induction, embryogenic callus, regeneration, Saccharum officinarum L., selection, geneticin

    Retrospective Cost Optimization for Adaptive State Estimation, Input Estimation, and Model Refinement

    AbstractRetrospective cost optimization was originally developed for adaptive control. In this paper, we show how this technique is applicable to three distinct but related problems, namely, state estimation, input estimation, and model refinement. To illustrate these techniques, we give two examples. In the first example, retrospective cost model refinement is used with synthetic data to estimate the cooling dynamics that are missing from a model of the ionosphere-thermosphere. In the second example, retrospective cost adaptive state estimation is used with data from a satellite to estimate a solar driver in the ionosphere- thermosphere, with performance gauged by using data from a second satellite

    Dielectric response of makrofol-KG polycarbonate irradiated with 145 MeV Ne6+ and 100 MeV Si8+ ions

    The passage of heavy ions in a track detector polymeric material produces lattice deformations. These deformations may be in the form of latent tracks or may vanish by self annealing in time. Heavy ion irradiation produces modifications in polymers in their relevant electrical, chemical and optical properties in the form of rearrangement of bonding, cross-linking, chain scission, formation of carbon rich clusters and changes in dielectric properties etc. Modification depends on the ion, its energy and fluence and the polymeric material. In the present work, a study of the dielectric response of pristine and heavy ion irradiated Makrofol-KG polycarbonate is carried out. 40 μm thick Makrofol-KG polycarbonate films were irradiated to various fluences with Si8+ ions of 100 MeV energy from Pelletron at Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi and Ne6+ ions of 145 MeV from Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata. On irradiation with heavy ions dielectric constant ( ) decreases with frequency where increases with fluence for both the ions. Variation of loss factor (tan ) with frequency for pristine and irradiated with Si ions reveals that tan increases as the frequency increases. Tan also increases with fluence. While Ne irradiated samples tan shows slight variation with frequency as well as with fluence.     Dynamic Wireless Information and Power Transfer Scheme for Nano-Empowered Vehicular Networks

    In this paper, we investigate the wireless power transfer and energy-efficiency (EE) optimization problem for nano-centric vehicular networks operating over the terahertz band. The inbody nano-sensors harvest energy from a power station via radio-frequency signal and then use the harvested energy to transmit data to the sink node. By considering the properties of terahertz band (i.e., sensitivity to distance and frequency over the communication path), we adopt the Brownian motion model to develop a time-variant terahertz channel model and to describe the mobility of the nano-sensors. Thus, based on the channel model and energy resources, we further develop a long-term EE optimization problem. The EE optimization is further converted into a series of energy-efficient resource allocation problems over the time slots via equivalent transformation method. The resource allocation problem for each timeslot, which is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP), is solved based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. In addition, a dynamic PSO-based EE optimization (DPEEO) algorithm is developed to obtain the sub-optimal solution for the EE optimization problem. By exploiting the special structure of the reformulated problem, an improved DPEEO algorithm, is presented which can handle the problem’s constraints quite well, decreases the research space, and greatly reduces the length of the convergence time. Simulation results validate the theoretical analysis of our system

    Psychosocial factors of deliberate self-harm in Afghanistan: A hospital based, matched case-control study

    Background: Deliberate self-harm is not only a major global public health problem but also an important index of psychological distress and a risk factor for suicide.Aims: We aimed to determine the psychosocial risk factors for deliberate self-harm in patients aged ≥ 16 years presenting to tertiary care hospitals in Kabul, Afghanistan.Methods: A matched case-control study was conducted from February 2015 to May 2015. We recruited 185 cases (patients with deliberate self-harm) and 555 age- and sex-matched controls (patients with general medical conditions) from 4 tertiary care hospitals in Kabul. We developed a questionnaire to record the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants, history of domestic violence, drug abuse and details about the act of deliberate self-harm, including the methods used. To assess depression and anxiety, we used the WHO self-reporting questionnaire (SRQ-20). Matched odds ratios with 95% confidence interval using conditional logistic regression were used to determine statistically significant associations between psychosocial factors and deliberate self-harm.Results: Family conflicts, domestic violence, interpersonal arguments and living in extended families were found to be significantly associated with deliberate self-harm.Conclusions: In Afghanistan, deliberate self-harm appears to be predominately related to interpersonal problems and family conflicts. About two-thirds of females and more than half of males scored positive for depression, yet none were receiving treatment for this. These findings have important policy implications for mental health and suicide prevention programmes in the country

    Study of optical band gap and carbon cluster sizes formed in 100 MeV Si8+ and 145 MeV Ne6+ ions irradiated polypropylene polymer

    A wide variety of material modifications in polymers have been studied by using ion irradiation techniques. Extensive research has focused on to Swift Heavy Ions (MeV's energy), probably because of good controllability and the large penetration length in polymers. High energy ion irradiation tends to damage polymers significantly by electronic excitation and ionization. It may result into the creation of latent tracks and can also cause formation of radicals such as ablation, sputtering, chain scission and intermolecular cross-linking, creation of triple bonds and unsaturated bonds and loss volatile fragments. Polypropylene polymer films of thickness 50 μm were irradiated to the fluences of 1 × 1010, 3 × 1010, 1 × 1011, 3 × 1011, 6 × 1011 and 1 × 1012 ions/cm2 with Si8+ ions of 100 MeV energy from Pelletron accelerator at Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi and Ne6+ ions of 145 MeV to the fluences of 108, 1010, 1011, 1012 and 1013 ions/cm3 from Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata. Optical modifications were characterized by UV towards the red end of the spectrum with the increase of the fluence. Value of optical band gap Eg shows a decreasing trend with ion fluence irradiated with both kinds of ions. Cluster size N, the number of carbon atoms per conjugation length increases with increasing ion dose.
