Superspace Formulation in a Three-Algebra Approach to D=3, N=4,5 Superconformal Chern-Simons Matter Theories
We present a superspace formulation of the D=3, N=4,5 superconformal
Chern-Simons Matter theories, with matter supermultiplets valued in a
symplectic 3-algebra. We first construct an N=1 superconformal action, and then
generalize a method used by Gaitto and Witten to enhance the supersymmetry from
N=1 to N=5. By decomposing the N=5 supermultiplets and the symplectic 3-algebra
properly and proposing a new super-potential term, we construct the N=4
superconformal Chern-Simons matter theories in terms of two sets of generators
of a (quaternion) symplectic 3-algebra. The N=4 theories can also be derived by
requiring that the supersymmetry transformations are closed on-shell. The
relationship between the 3-algebras, Lie superalgebras, Lie algebras and
embedding tensors (proposed in [E. A. Bergshoeff, O. Hohm, D. Roest, H.
Samtleben, and E. Sezgin, J. High Energy Phys. 09 (2008) 101.]) is also
clarified. The general N=4,5 superconformal Chern-Simons matter theories in
terms of ordinary Lie algebras can be rederived in our 3-algebra approach. All
known N=4,5 superconformal Chern-Simons matter theories can be recovered in the
present superspace formulation for super-Lie-algebra realization of symplectic
3-algebras.Comment: 37 pages, minor changes, published in PR
Influence of oxygen vacancy on the electronic structure of HfO film
We investigated the unoccupied part of the electronic structure of the
oxygen-deficient hafnium oxide (HfO) using soft x-ray absorption
spectroscopy at O and Hf edges. Band-tail states beneath the
unoccupied Hf 5 band are observed in the O -edge spectra; combined with
ultraviolet photoemission spectrum, this indicates the non-negligible
occupation of Hf 5 state. However, Hf -edge magnetic circular dichroism
spectrum reveals the absence of a long-range ferromagnetic spin order in the
oxide. Thus the small amount of electron gained by the vacancy formation
does not show inter-site correlation, contrary to a recent report [M.
Venkatesan {\it et al.}, Nature {\bf 430}, 630 (2004)].Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Anti-malarial drug artesunate restores metabolic changes in experimental allergic asthma
The anti-malarial drug artesunate possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative actions in experimental asthma, comparable to corticosteroid. We hypothesized that artesunate may modulate disease-relevant metabolic alterations in allergic asthma. To explore metabolic profile changes induced by artesunate in allergic airway inflammation, we analysed bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and serum from naïve and ovalbumin-induced asthma mice treated with artesunate, using both gas and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolomics. Pharmacokinetics analyses of serum and lung tissues revealed that artesunate is rapidly converted into the active metabolite dihydroartemisinin. Artesunate effectively suppressed BALF total and differential counts, and repressed BALF Th2 cytokines, IL-17, IL-12(p40), MCP-1 and G-CSF levels. Artesunate had no effects on both BALF and serum metabolome in naïve mice. Artesunate promoted restoration of BALF sterols (cholesterol, cholic acid and cortol), phosphatidylcholines and carbohydrates (arabinose, mannose and galactose) and of serum 18-oxocortisol, galactose, glucose and glucouronic acid in asthma. Artesunate prevented OVA-induced increases in pro-inflammatory metabolites from arginine–proline metabolic pathway, particularly BALF levels of urea and alanine and serum levels of urea, proline, valine and homoserine. Multiple statistical correlation analyses revealed association between altered BALF and serum metabolites and inflammatory cytokines. Dexamethasone failed to reduce urea level and caused widespread changes in metabolites irrelevant to asthma development. Here we report the first metabolome profile of artesunate treatment in experimental asthma. Artesunate restored specific metabolic perturbations in airway inflammation, which correlated well with its anti-inflammatory actions. Our metabolomics findings further strengthen the therapeutic value of using artesunate to treat allergic asthma
INVESTIGATION OF FABRIC CLEANING USING FLUID DYNAMIC GAUGING: Effects of Fine Bubbles
Clothes washing in the food industry and domestic setting is regarded as a chore and is commonly carried out by hand or electrical appliances. The cleaning process is far from optimum and consumes large amount of energy, water and chemicals. Commercial clothes washing powders and liquids are often formulated to contain enzymes. Such formulations enable washes to be carried out at lower temperatures to improve performance, and can also increase the amount of surfactant attaching to a stain or soil, thereby reducing the surfactant load both in the wash, and also in the effluent. Most clothes washing studies are often performed in-house by manufacturers of cleaning formulation such that data is protected and rarely available in the public domain. This research is a collaborative project between the Green Cleaning Laboratory, Bath and the Department of Chemical Engineering,Thammasat University that presents a new and systematic method to study fabric cleaning. Here, the technique of Fluid Dynamic Gauging (FDG) was used to apply a range of known fluid shear stresses (0-0.316 Pa) on coconut milk soils stained on polycotton. The efficacy of two bio-detergents and the effect of soaking at 20 and 30oC were investigated and analysed. The extent of cleanliness of the fabric was characterised using gravimetric and optical methods. Studies on using fine bubbles (20-50 microns) as a pre-treatment step to enhance cleaning was also conducted at 20 and 30oC. Preliminary results indicated that soaking the stained fabric in fine bubbles for 10 minutes could enhance removal under fluid shear. Further experiments using fine bubbles are currently underway
Modelling Surround-aware Contrast Sensitivity for HDR Displays
Despite advances in display technology, many existing applications rely on psychophysical datasets of human perception gathered using older, sometimes outdated displays. As a result, there exists the underlying assumption that such measurements can
be carried over to the new viewing conditions of more modern technology. We have conducted a series of psychophysical experiments to explore contrast sensitivity using a state-of-the-art HDR display, taking into account not only the spatial frequency
and luminance of the stimuli but also their surrounding luminance levels. From our data, we have derived a novel surroundaware contrast sensitivity function (CSF), which predicts human contrast sensitivity more accurately. We additionally provide
a practical version that retains the benefits of our full model, while enabling easy backward compatibility and consistently producing good results across many existing applications that make use of CSF models. We show examples of effective HDR
video compression using a transfer function derived from our CSF, tone-mapping, and improved accuracy in visual difference prediction
Behavioral evidence for the differential regulation of p-p38 MAPK and p-NF-κB in rats with trigeminal neuropathic pain
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We investigated the differential regulation of p-p38 MAPK or p-NF-κB in male Sprague-Dawley rats with inferior alveolar nerve injury resulting from mal-positioned dental implants. For this purpose, we characterized the temporal expression of p-p38 MAPK or p-NF-κB in the medullary dorsal horn and examined changes in nociceptive behavior after a blockade of p-p38 MAPK or p-NF-κB pathways in rats with trigeminal neuropathic pain.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Under anesthesia, the left lower second molar was extracted and replaced with a mini dental implant to intentionally injure the inferior alveolar nerve. Western and immunofluorescence analysis revealed that p-p38 MAPK is upregulated in microglia following nerve injury and that this expression peaked on postoperative day (POD) 3 through 7. However, the activation of p-NF-κB in astrocyte peaked on POD 7 through 21. The intracisternal administration of SB203580 (1 or 10 μg), a p38 MAPK inhibitor, on POD 3 but not on POD 21 markedly inhibits mechanical allodynia and the p-p38 MAPK expression. However, the intracisternal administration of SN50 (0.2 or 2 ng), an NF-κB inhibitor, on POD 21 but not on POD 3 attenuates mechanical allodynia and p-NF-κB expression. Dexamethasone (25 mg/kg) decreases not only the activation of p38 MAPK but also that of NF-κB on POD 7.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that early expression of p-p38 MAPK in the microglia and late induction of p-NF-κB in astrocyte play an important role in trigeminal neuropathic pain and that a blockade of p-p38 MAPK at an early stage and p-NF-κB at a late stage might be a potential therapeutic strategy for treatment of trigeminal neuropathic pain.</p

Earthquake Forecast via Neutrino Tomography
We discuss the possibility of forecasting earthquakes by means of
(anti)neutrino tomography. Antineutrinos emitted from reactors are used as a
probe. As the antineutrinos traverse through a region prone to earthquakes,
observable variations in the matter effect on the antineutrino oscillation
would provide a tomography of the vicinity of the region. In this preliminary
work, we adopt a simplified model for the geometrical profile and matter
density in a fault zone. We calculate the survival probability of electron
antineutrinos for cases without and with an anomalous accumulation of electrons
which can be considered as a clear signal of the coming earthquake, at the
geological region with a fault zone, and find that the variation may reach as
much as 3% for emitted from a reactor. The case for a beam
from a neutrino factory is also investigated, and it is noted that, because of
the typically high energy associated with such neutrinos, the oscillation
length is too large and the resultant variation is not practically observable.
Our conclusion is that with the present reactor facilities and detection
techniques, it is still a difficult task to make an earthquake forecast using
such a scheme, though it seems to be possible from a theoretical point of view
while ignoring some uncertainties. However, with the development of the
geology, especially the knowledge about the fault zone, and with the
improvement of the detection techniques, etc., there is hope that a medium-term
earthquake forecast would be feasible.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
