The model project has been designed to meet two keys of interest. New research studies have been orientated towards the main emphasis of the Medical Faculty of the University of Rostock, namely 'Transplantation Medicine, Artificial Substitution of Organs, and Biomaterials'; furthermore, the efforts have been integrated into the running daily medical care in order to address questions arising from applied pharmacotherapy within this field. With respect to the transplantation of the pancreas and transplantation or implantation in oral and maxillofacial surgery, the rational pharmacotherapeutical regimen and dosing have been investigated and recommendations stated. For artificial eye lens implantation following cataract surgery, the most appropriate antibiotic substances and modes of their topical application have been explored to ensure sufficient humour concentrations in the anterior part of the eye. For the initial phase of kidney transplantation, a pharmacokinetic-based method has been developed which allows a significantly higher success rate in targeting cyclosporine concentrations individually into the therapeutic range. Regarding the continuous detoxification of intensive care patients (CVVHD, MARS), new knowledge related to distribution and elimination and antimicrobial chemotherapeutics has been established and transformed to dosing recommendations for the clinical practice.
