    Caregiver distress in parkinsonism

    This study examined the frequency and degree of caregiver burden in persons with parkinsonism, a group of disorders with four primary symptoms that include tremor, rigidity, postural instability, and bradykinesia. We assessed associations between perceived caregiver burden and physical, cognitive, and functional impairments using well-established tools for persons with parkinsonism. The 49 individuals with parkinsonism ranged in age from 61 to 87 (mean = 75), while their caregivers (N = 49) ranged in age from 48 to 83 (mean = 70). The caregivers were predominantly either wives (82%) or daughters (6%), with other family members, friends, and/or neighbors (12%) making up the rest. The caregivers reported a relatively high ability for coping (mean scores = 4.6/6). Caregiver burden was significantly negatively associated with activities of daily living and motoric difficulties as measured on the Unified Parkinson\u27s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Likewise, caregiver burden was negatively associated with caregiver self-reported sleep and coping ability. Results did not demonstrate an association on the UPDRS among mentation, behavior, and mood. We found a significant negative correlation for mentation between the Folstein Mini-Mental Status Examination and caregiver burden measures; however, we did not find this association with the Dementia Rating Scale-2.     Recommendations for a core outcome set for measuring standing balance in adult populations: a consensus-based approach

    Standing balance is imperative for mobility and avoiding falls. Use of an excessive number of standing balance measures has limited the synthesis of balance intervention data and hampered consistent clinical practice.To develop recommendations for a core outcome set (COS) of standing balance measures for research and practice among adults.A combination of scoping reviews, literature appraisal, anonymous voting and face-to-face meetings with fourteen invited experts from a range of disciplines with international recognition in balance measurement and falls prevention. Consensus was sought over three rounds using pre-established criteria.The scoping review identified 56 existing standing balance measures validated in adult populations with evidence of use in the past five years, and these were considered for inclusion in the COS.Fifteen measures were excluded after the first round of scoring and a further 36 after round two. Five measures were considered in round three. Two measures reached consensus for recommendation, and the expert panel recommended that at a minimum, either the Berg Balance Scale or Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test be used when measuring standing balance in adult populations.Inclusion of two measures in the COS may increase the feasibility of potential uptake, but poses challenges for data synthesis. Adoption of the standing balance COS does not constitute a comprehensive balance assessment for any population, and users should include additional validated measures as appropriate.The absence of a gold standard for measuring standing balance has contributed to the proliferation of outcome measures. These recommendations represent an important first step towards greater standardization in the assessment and measurement of this critical skill and will inform clinical research and practice internationally

    ERGONOMIC EVALUATION OF LOW COST ADJUSTABLE WORKSTATION FOR ASSEMBLY OPERATION

    Ergonomics is the science and technology of fitting the activities and environment to the abilities, dimensions, and needs of people to improve performance while enhancing comfort, health and safety [1] The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of an ergonomically designed adjustable workstation for performing a repetitive industrial assembly task on operator performance and productivity. Ergonomically designed fully adjustable assembly workstations could be expensive for companies to adopt, especially the small scale industries. Therefore, a low-cost, ergonomically designed adjustable assembly workstation was designed, developed and evaluated for assembly of a product in a manufacturing company. Experiments were conducted on the existing fixed height and on the newly designed ergonomic assembly workstation using five industrial assembly operators. The operator performance on the ergonomically designed workstation was 29% higher compared to the existing non ergonomically designed fixed height assembly workstation. The increased performance was due to flexibility and ergonomic design features incorporated in the workstation

    Synthesis and Characterization of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber-Clay Nanocomposites With Enhanced Mechanical and Gas Barrier Properties

    Five styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)/clay nanocomposite or hybrid systems were synthesized via mechanical mixing of SBR using a Brabender mixer and a 2-roll mill in the presence of unmodified sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) clay, MMT modified with octadecylamine (C18amine), MMT modified with a zwitterionic surfactant, octadecyldimethyl betaine (C18DMB), and MMT modified with a polymerizable cationic surfactant, vinylbenzyl octadecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (VODAC) or vinylbenzyl dodecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (VDAC). The surfactant chain length and functional groups affected the dispersion of clay nanolayers in the matrix and the overall properties of the nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed peaks corresponding to intercalated structures; transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations agreed well with XRD assessment of the composites. SBR/VODAC-MMT system exhibited the best dispersion among the nanocomposites studied. VODAC-MMT was partially exfoliated in SBR matrix and the average aspect ratio of the nanolayer stacks or aggregates was high (20). Depending on the amount of clay, considerable mechanical reinforcement and gas barrier enhancement were achieved in nanocomposites over pure rubber. Tensile strength in excess of 18MPa was observed in SBR nanocomposites with 30 phr C18 organoclays. The storage modulus at 25C increased by a factor of four by incorporating 10 phr VODAC-MMT in SBR. The most pronounced oxygen barrier enhancement was again observed in SBR/VODAC-MMT nanocomposite with the reduction of permeability by 60% at silicate volume fraction of 0.06. The superior performance of nanocomposites containing VODAC-MMT is attributed to the presence of the vinyl-benzyl group and 18 carbon-atom tail in the surfactant leading to high compatibility with SBR and nano-scale dispersion in the SBR matrix
