Transient Monitoring Function based Fault Classifier for Relaying Applications

    Get PDF
This paper proposes Transient monitoring function (TMF) based fault classification approach for transmission line protection. The classifier provides accurate results under various system conditions involving fault resistance, inception angle, location and load angle. The transient component during fault is measured by TMF and appropriate logics applied for fault classification. Simulation studies using MATLAB®/SIMULINK™ are carried out for a 400 kV, 50 Hz power system with variable system conditions. Results show that the proposed classifier has high classification accuracy. The method developed has been compared with a fault classification technique based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The proposed technique can be implemented for real time protection schemes employing distance relaying

Off-line Signature Verification Based on Fusion of Grid and Global Features Using Neural Networks

Signature is widely used and developed area of research for personal verification and authentication. In this paper Off-line Signature Verification Based on Fusion of Grid and Global Features Using Neural Networks (SVFGNN) is presented. The global and grid features are fused to generate set of features for the verification of signature. The test signature is compared with data base signatures based on the set of features and match/non match of signatures is decided with the help of Neural Network. The performance analysis is conducted on random, unskilled and skilled signature forgeries along with genuine signatures. It is observed that FAR and FRR results are improved in the proposed method compared to the existing algorithm

Design considerations for surface plasmon resonance-based fiber-optic detection of human blood group

    Get PDF
A fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for the detection of human blood groups is proposed. Previous experimental results describing the wavelength-dependent refractive index variation of multiple samples of different blood groups are considered for theoretical calculations. The spectral interrogation method, along with silica fiber and silver layer, is considered. The sensor\u27s performance is closely analyzed in terms of shift in SPR wavelength and SPR curve width in order to optimize the design parameters for a reliable and accurate blood-group identifier. The sensor design parameters include silver layer thickness, fiber core diameter, sensing region length, and temperature variation. The results are explained in terms of light coupling and plasmon resonance condition. The proposed sensing probe is able to provide high sensitivity and accuracy of blood-group detection, thereby opening an easy and reliable window for medical applications

3-D IR imaging with uncooled GaN photodiodes using nondegenerate two-photon absorption

We utilize the recently demonstrated orders of magnitude enhancement of extremely nondegenerate two-photon absorption in direct-gap semiconductor photodiodes to perform scanned imaging of 3D structures using IR femtosecond illumination pulses (1.6 um and 4.93 um) gated on the GaN detector by sub-gap, femtosecond pulses. While transverse resolution is limited by the usual imaging criteria, the longitudinal or depth resolution can be less than a wavelength, dependent on the pulsewidths in this nonlinear interaction within the detector element. The imaging system can accommodate a wide range of wavelengths in the mid-IR and near-IR without the need to modify the detection and imaging systems.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

The miRNAome of \u3cem\u3eCatharanthus roseus\u3c/em\u3e: Identification, Expression Analysis, and Potential Roles of MicroRNAs in Regulation of Terpenoid Indole Alkaloid Biosynthesis

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate numerous crucial biological processes in plants. However, information is limited on their involvement in the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites in plants, including Catharanthus roseus that produces a number of pharmaceutically valuable, bioactive terpenoid indole alkaloids (TIAs). Using small RNA-sequencing, we identified 181 conserved and 173 novel miRNAs (cro-miRNAs) in C. roseus seedlings. Genome-wide expression analysis revealed that a set of cro-miRNAs are differentially regulated in response to methyl jasmonate (MeJA). In silico target prediction identified 519 potential cro-miRNA targets that include several auxin response factors (ARFs). The presence of cleaved transcripts of miRNA-targeted ARFs in C. roseus cells was confirmed by Poly(A) Polymerase-Mediated Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends (PPM-RACE). We showed that auxin (indole acetic acid, IAA) repressed the expression of key TIA pathway genes in C. roseus seedlings. Moreover, we demonstrated that a miRNA-regulated ARF, CrARF16, binds to the promoters of key TIA pathway genes and repress their expression. The C. roseus miRNAome reported here provides a comprehensive account of the cro-miRNA populations, as well as their abundance and expression profiles in response to MeJA. In addition, our findings underscore the importance of miRNAs in posttranscriptional control of the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites
