Thirty years after the Chernobyl accident: what lessons have we learnt?

    Get PDF
April 2016 sees the 30th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. As a consequence of the accident populations were relocated in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine and remedial measures were put in place to reduce the entry of contaminants (primarily 134+137Cs) into the human food chain in a number of countries throughout Europe. Remedial measures are still today in place in a number of countries, and areas of the former Soviet Union remain abandoned. The Chernobyl accident led to a large resurgence in radioecological studies both to aid remediation and to be able to make future predictions on the post-accident situation, but, also in recognition that more knowledge was required to cope with future accidents. In this paper we discuss, what in the authors' opinions, were the advances made in radioecology as a consequence of the Chernobyl accident. The areas we identified as being significantly advanced following Chernobyl were: the importance of semi-natural ecosystems in human dose formation; the characterisation and environmental behaviour of ‘hot particles'; the development and application of countermeasures; the “fixation” and long term bioavailability of radiocaesium and; the effects of radiation on plants and animals

Reconstruction of longitudinal electrons bunch profiles at FACET, SLAC

Work supported by funding from Universite Paris Sud, program "Attractivite" and by the ANR under contract ANR-12-JS05-0003-01 - http://accelconf.web.cern.ch/AccelConf/IPAC2014/papers/thpme093.pdfInternational audienceThe E-203 collaboration is testing a device on FACET at SLAC to measure the longitudinal profile of electron bunches using Smith-Purcell radiation [1]. At FACET the electron bunches have an energy of 20 GeV and a duration of a few hundred femtoseconds [2]. Smith-Purcell radiation is emitted when a charged particle passes close to the sur- face of a metallic grating. We have studied the stability of the measurement from pulse to pulse and the resolution of the measure depending on the number of gratings used

TUPC38 - Work supported by seed funding from the John Fell Fund, University of Oxford, Université Paris-Sud, program "Attractivité" and by the ANR under contract ANR-12-JS05-0003-01International audienceWe report on recent measurements made at FACET by the E-203 collaboration to test a longitudinal bunch profile monitor based on Coherent Smith-Purcell radiation. The capacity of this monitor to resolve sub-picosecond bunches will be shown as well as a comparison of profile reconstructed for different beam compression settings. We will also present recent electromagnetic simulations of the interactions between the beam and the grating as well as the expected resolution of such monitor. Comparison between Coherent Smith-Purcell radiation measurement and those made with other techniques will also be discussed. Finally future upgrades of the experiment and steps toward the construction of a single shot longitudinal profile monitor will be presented

Exogenous geologic processes (EGP) on the territory of Perm Krai have a wide development. In this list, karst occupies a special position, as this process is widespread and, in addition, can serve as a catalyst for associated hazardous geological processes. At the request of the management of the State Regional Budgetary Cultural Institution "Perm Regional Museum of History" the authors conducted a reconnaissance survey of karst occurrences in the territory of the architectural and ethnographic museum "Khokhlovka" to assess the geological risks and to ensure the safe operation of cultural heritage object, non-capital structures and engineering facilities. This article presents the results of preliminary assessment of karst hazard of the territory, based on the analysis of stock materials, remote sensing data and field reconnaissance survey.

Experimental observation of superradiance in millimeter-wave band

The first experimental results of the observation of superradiance from a single subnanosecond electron bunch are presented. Superradiance was associated with different varieties of stimulated emission (bremstruhlung, cyclotron, Cherenkov, etc). Unique megawatt power level microwave pulses of short duration (0.3-0.5 ns) have been obtained
