Dimensionally continued Oppenheimer-Snyder gravitational collapse II: solutions in odd dimensions
The Lovelock gravity extends the theory of general relativity to higher
dimensions in such a way that the field equations remain of second order. The
theory has many constant coefficients with no a priori meaning. Nevertheless it
is possible to reduce them to two, the cosmological constant and Newton's
constant. In this process one separates theories in even dimensions from
theories in odd dimensions. In a previous work gravitational collapse in even
dimensions was analysed. In this work attention is given to odd dimensions. It
is found that black holes also emerge as the final state of gravitational
collapse of a regular dust fluid.Comment: 16 pages, 3figures, latex Journal: to appear in Journal of

Gravitational magnetic monopoles and Majumdar-Papapetrou stars
A large amount of work has been dedicated to studying general relativity
coupled to non-Abelian Yang-Mills type theories. It has been shown that the
magnetic monopole, a solution of the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations can be coupled
to gravitation. For a low Higgs mass there are regular solutions, and for a
sufficiently massive monopole the system develops an extremal magnetic
Reissner-Nordstrom quasi-horizon. These solutions, called quasi-black holes,
although non-singular, are arbitrarily close to having a horizon. However, at
the critical value the quasi-black hole turns into a degenerate spacetime. On
the other hand, for a high Higgs mass, a sufficiently massive monopole develops
also a quasi-black hole, but it turns into an extremal true horizon, with
matter fields outside. One can also put a small Schwarzschild black hole inside
the magnetic monopole, an example of a non-Abelian black hole. Surprisingly,
Majumdar-Papapetrou systems, Abelian systems constructed from extremal dust,
also show a resembling behavior. Previously, we have reported that one can find
Majumdar-Papapetrou solutions which can be arbitrarily close of being a black
hole, displaying quasi-black hole behavior. With the aim of better
understanding the similarities between gravitational monopoles and
Majumdar-Papapetrou systems, we study a system composed of two extremal
electrically charged spherical shells (or stars, generically) in the
Einstein--Maxwell--Majumdar-Papapetrou theory. We review the gravitational
properties of the monopoles, and compare with the properties of the double
extremal electric shell system. These quasi-black holes can help in the
understanding of true black holes, and can give insight into the nature of the
entropy of black holes in the form of entanglement.Comment: 38 pages,9 Figures, minor change

Four-path interference and uncertainty principle in photodetachment microscopy
We study the quantal motion of electrons emitted by a pointlike monochromatic
isotropic source into parallel uniform electric and magnetic fields. The
two-path interference pattern in the emerging electron wave due to the electric
force is modified by the magnetic lens effect which periodically focuses the
beam into narrow filaments along the symmetry axis. There, four classical paths
interfere. With increasing electron energy, the current distribution changes
from a quantum regime governed by the uncertainty principle, to an intricate
spatial pattern that yields to a semiclassical analysis.Comment: submitted to Europhysics Letter
Reverse logistics in a pharmaceutical company: a case study
Schering spends considerable effort to undertake product recovery activities in pharmaceutical production. The two main recovery activities are by-product recycling and solvent reuse. The main driver for engaging in these activities is economical. Recovery leads to annual savings of approximately DM 25 million, which is about 8.5 % of the total production cost. This figure does not include additional savings due to reduced
disposal quantities and additional costs due to investments in recovery equipment, of which we do not have reliable estimates. Furthermore, being engaged in recovery activities has additional benefits for Schering that are related to the reduced waste stream: production is in accordance with environmental legislation, the
company builds an environmentally friendly image, and there is less strain on the environment. The downside of the recovery activities is that they complicate production and inventory planning. Especially the added complexity of production planning, resulting from cycles in the production structure, is a disadvantage.A simple MRP approach, as commonly used in practice, is no longer applicable but has to be replaced by a
more sophisticated planning procedure. Schering has developed an advanced decision support system which integrates a MIP procedure. Thus it turns out that reverse logistics also is a field which creates challenges for developing advanced planning systems in order to support practical decision making
Quantitative supply chain segmentation model for dynamic alignment
[EN] Companies deal with different customer groups, requirements differ among them, which makes it important to define the service level precisely and improve customer service through different supply chain strategies for each group. An alternative to deal with imprecision related to the segmentation processes suggested by either the Leagile or the Dynamic Alignment Schools is the application of fuzzy set theory. The objective of this work is to develop a quantitative model that uses the fuzzy set theory and, based on sales data, assess the company s supply chain(s). The model's aim is to facilitate managers' decision-making processes to achieve the dynamic alignment. It was possible to identify the supply chains that serve the client groups evaluated, providing answers faster than the analysis proposed by the models found in the literature. The application in two real situations validated the model since the results obtained were consistent with the reality pointed out by the experts of the companies assessed. The model indicates possible actions for the realignment of the supply chain by their managers. Results obtained should improve practice, preparing managers to cope with the organizations` multiple supply chains. This study is the first one that aims to segment quantitatively supply chains on a company applying fuzzy set theory, providing a novel approach to align operations and supply chain strategy dynamically.Alves Ferreira, R.; A. Quasi-black holes: definition and general properties
Objects that are on the verge of being extremal black holes but actually are
distinct in many ways are called quasi-black holes. Quasi-black holes are
defined here and treated in a unified way through the displaying of their
properties. The main ones are (i) there are infinite redshift whole regions,
(ii) the spacetimes exhibit degenerate, almost singular, features but their
curvature invariants remain perfectly regular everywhere, (iii) in the limit
under discussion, outer and inner regions become mutually impenetrable and
disjoint, although, in contrast to the usual black holes, this separation is of
a dynamical nature, rather than purely causal, (iv) for external far away
observers the spacetime is virtually indistinguishable from that of extremal
black holes. It is shown, in addition, that quasi-black holes must be extremal.
Connections with black hole and wormhole physics are also drawn.Comment: 29 pages, minor change
