Diurnal variations from muon data at Takeyama underground station

    Get PDF
An underground station, Takeyama, is introduced, and some results of the solar diurnal and semi-diurnal variations for the period between 1967 and 1984 are presented. There are clear tendencies of double and single solar cycle variations in the daily variations which are in good accord with those detected by other underground and neutron monitor observations

Fundamental study on a thin-film ae sensor for measurement of behavior of a multi-pad contact slider

    Get PDF
To study the fundamental dynamic characteristics of a multi-pad slider for contact recording, we developed a thin-film piezoelectric acoustic emission array sensor on an Si-suspension with an array pattern similar to that of contact pads. Experiments showed that the sensitivity of the sensor is about 0. 11 V/N (slider thickness: 0.2 mm) and that each array sensor designed here is not influenced by the acoustic waves which occur due to contact with other contact pads, so the contact or non-contact condition of each pad can be measured

Superconductivity in Pseudo-Binary Silicide SrNixSi2-x with AlB2-Type Structure

We demonstrate the emergence of superconductivity in pseudo-binary silicide SrNixSi2-x. The compound exhibits a structural phase transition from the cubic SrSi2-type structure (P4132) to the hexagonal AlB2-type structure (P6/mmm) upon substituting Ni for Si at approximately x = 0.1. The hexagonal structure is stabilized in the range of 0.1 < x < 0.7. The superconducting phase appears in the vicinity of the structural phase boundary. Ni acts as a nonmagnetic dopant, as confirmed by the Pauli paramagnetic behavior.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

κ\kappa-Deformed Statistics and Classical Fourmomentum Addition Law

We consider κ\kappa-deformed relativistic symmetries described algebraically by modified Majid-Ruegg bicrossproduct basis and investigate the quantization of field oscillators for the κ\kappa-deformed free scalar fields on κ\kappa-Minkowski space. By modification of standard multiplication rule, we postulate the κ\kappa-deformed algebra of bosonic creation and annihilation operators. Our algebra permits to define the n-particle states with classical addition law for the fourmomenta in a way which is not in contradiction with the nonsymmetric quantum fourmomentum coproduct. We introduce κ\kappa-deformed Fock space generated by our κ\kappa-deformed oscillators which satisfy the standard algebraic relations with modified κ\kappa-multiplication rule. We show that such a κ\kappa-deformed bosonic Fock space is endowed with the conventional bosonic symmetry properties. Finally we discuss the role of κ\kappa-deformed algebra of oscillators in field-theoretic noncommutative framework.Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages. Thin-film piezoelectric impact sensor array fabricated on a Si slider for measuring head-disk interaction

    Get PDF
A new type of Acoustic Emission sensor using a thin film piezoelectric material (sputtered ZnO) was developed for measuring head-disk interaction in a rigid magnetic disk system. The sensor is mounted on a Si slider (length: 3 mm) and was fabricated using micro-machining techniques in our on-going efforts to downsize sliders. Some fundamental tests of the sensor were conducted: sensitivity and frequency characteristics, and a flying test over a rotating bump disk

Contingent Capital and Bank Risk-Taking among British Banks before World War I

    Get PDF
The recent financial turmoil highlights the incentive of highly leveraged financial institutions to take excessive risk, given the protection of limited liability. During the nineteenth and early twentieth century, many banks operated under liability rules which obligated shareholders to bear larger costs of bank insolvency in the form of contingent, or even unlimited liability. This paper examines the empirical relationship between the size of banks’ contingent liability and their risk-taking behavior using data on British banks from 1878-1912. We find that banks with more contingent liability appear to have taken less risk. We also find evidence that the risk-reducing effects of contingent liability were larger for banks with higher leverage, suggesting that contingent capital mitigated moral hazard problem at banks.Contingent Capital, Bank Risk-Taking, British Banks

Local Spin Susceptibility of the S=1/2 Kagome Lattice in ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2

We report single-crystal 2-D NMR investigation of the nearly ideal spin S=1/2 kagome lattice ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2. We successfully identify 2-D NMR signals originating from the nearest-neighbors of Cu2+ defects occupying Zn sites. From the 2-D Knight shift measurements, we demonstrate that weakly interacting Cu2+ spins at these defects cause the large Curie-Weiss enhancement toward T=0 commonly observed in the bulk susceptibility data. We estimate the intrinsic spin susceptibility of the kagome planes by subtracting defect contributions, and explore several scenarios.Comment: 4 figures; published in PR-B Rapid Communication

Magnetic excitations in weakly coupled spin dimers and chains material Cu2Fe2Ge4O13

Magnetic excitations in a weakly coupled spin dimers and chains compound Cu2Fe2Ge4O13 are measured by inelastic neutron scattering. Both structure factors and dispersion of low energy excitations up to 10 meV energy transfer are well described by a semiclassical spin wave theory involving interacting Fe3+^{3+} (S=5/2S = 5/2) chains. Additional dispersionless excitations are observed at higher energies, at ω=24\hbar \omega = 24 meV, and associated with singlet-triplet transitions within Cu2+^{2+}-dimers. Both types of excitations can be understood by treating weak interactions between the Cu2+^{2+} and Fe3+^{3+} subsystems at the level of the Mean Field/ Random Phase Approximation. However, this simple model fails to account for the measured temperature dependence of the 24 meV mode.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure

A Measurement of Proper Motions of SiO Maser Sources in the Galactic Center with the VLBA

We report on the high-precision astrometric observations of maser sources around the Galactic Center in the SiO J=1--0 v=1 and 2 lines with the VLBA during 2001 -- 2004. With phase-referencing interferometry referred to the radio continuum source Sgr A*, accurate positions of masers were obtained for three detected objects: IRS 10 EE (7 epochs), IRS 15NE (2 epochs), and SiO 6 (only 1 epoch). Because circumstellar masers of these objects were resolved into several components, proper motions for the maser sources were derived with several different methods. Combining our VLBA results with those of the previous VLA observations, we obtained the IRS 10EE proper motion of 76+-3 km s^{-1} (at 8 kpc) to the south relative to Sgr A*. Almost null proper motion of this star in the east--west direction results in a net transverse motion of the infrared reference frame of about 30+-9 km s^{-1} to the west relative to Sgr A*. The proper-motion data also suggests that IRS 10EE is an astrometric binary with an unseen massive companion.Comment: High-res. figures are available at ftp://ftp.nro.nao.ac.jp/nroreport/no656.pdf.gz .
