Genetics of common polygenic ischaemic stroke: current understanding and future challenges.
Stroke is the third commonest cause of death and the major cause of adult neurological disability worldwide. While much is known about conventional risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and incidence of smoking, these environmental factors only account for a proportion of stroke risk. Up to 50% of stroke risk can be attributed to genetic risk factors, although to date no single risk allele has been convincingly identified as contributing to this risk. Advances in the field of genetics, most notably genome wide association studies (GWAS), have revealed genetic risks in other cardiovascular disease and these techniques are now being applied to ischaemic stroke. This paper covers previous genetic studies in stroke including candidate gene studies, discusses the genome wide association approach, and future techniques such as next generation sequencing and the post-GWAS era. The review also considers the overlap from other cardiovascular diseases and whether findings from these may also be informative in ischaemic stroke
VMEXT: A Visualization Tool for Mathematical Expression Trees
Mathematical expressions can be represented as a tree consisting of terminal
symbols, such as identifiers or numbers (leaf nodes), and functions or
operators (non-leaf nodes). Expression trees are an important mechanism for
storing and processing mathematical expressions as well as the most frequently
used visualization of the structure of mathematical expressions. Typically,
researchers and practitioners manually visualize expression trees using
general-purpose tools. This approach is laborious, redundant, and error-prone.
Manual visualizations represent a user's notion of what the markup of an
expression should be, but not necessarily what the actual markup is. This paper
presents VMEXT - a free and open source tool to directly visualize expression
trees from parallel MathML. VMEXT simultaneously visualizes the presentation
elements and the semantic structure of mathematical expressions to enable users
to quickly spot deficiencies in the Content MathML markup that does not affect
the presentation of the expression. Identifying such discrepancies previously
required reading the verbose and complex MathML markup. VMEXT also allows one
to visualize similar and identical elements of two expressions. Visualizing
expression similarity can support support developers in designing retrieval
approaches and enable improved interaction concepts for users of mathematical
information retrieval systems. We demonstrate VMEXT's visualizations in two
web-based applications. The first application presents the visualizations
alone. The second application shows a possible integration of the
visualizations in systems for mathematical knowledge management and
mathematical information retrieval. The application converts LaTeX input to
parallel MathML, computes basic similarity measures for mathematical
expressions, and visualizes the results using VMEXT.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, Intelligent Computer Mathematics - 10th

Tradisi Upacara Kematian Pada Masyarakat Nahdhiyyin Dalam Tinjauan Agama Dan Adat
Is there a breakdown of effective field theory at the horizon of an extremal black hole?
© 2017, The Author(s). Linear perturbations of extremal black holes exhibit the Aretakis instability, in which higher derivatives of a scalar field grow polynomially with time along the event horizon. This suggests that higher derivative corrections to the classical equations of motion may become large, indicating a breakdown of effective field theory at late time on the event horizon. We investigate whether or not this happens. For extremal Reissner-Nordstrom we argue that, for a large class of theories, general covariance ensures that the higher derivative corrections to the equations of motion appear only in combinations that remain small compared to two derivative terms so effective field theory remains valid. For extremal Kerr, the situation is more complicated since backreaction of the scalar field is not understood even in the two derivative theory. Nevertheless we argue that the effects of the higher derivative terms will be small compared to the two derivative terms as long as the spacetime remains close to extremal Kerr.SH is supported by the Blavatnik Postdoctoral Fellowship. An Efficient Representation of Euclidean Gravity I
We explore how the topology of spacetime fabric is encoded into the local
structure of Riemannian metrics using the gauge theory formulation of Euclidean
gravity. In part I, we provide a rigorous mathematical foundation to prove that
a general Einstein manifold arises as the sum of SU(2)_L Yang-Mills instantons
and SU(2)_R anti-instantons where SU(2)_L and SU(2)_R are normal subgroups of
the four-dimensional Lorentz group Spin(4) = SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R. Our proof
relies only on the general properties in four dimensions: The Lorentz group
Spin(4) is isomorphic to SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R and the six-dimensional vector space
of two-forms splits canonically into the sum of three-dimensional vector spaces
of self-dual and anti-self-dual two-forms. Consolidating these two, it turns
out that the splitting of Spin(4) is deeply correlated with the decomposition
of two-forms on four-manifold which occupies a central position in the theory
of four-manifolds.Comment: 31 pages, 1 figur
The use of Lawsonia inermis linn. (henna) in the management of burn wound infections
The effects of water and chloroform extracts of the leaves of Lawsonia inermis (henna plant) against the primary invaders of burnt wounds was investigated. Clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sp, Pseudemonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Fusarium oxysporum, and Aspergillusniger were treated with extracts of the leaves of L. inermis for antimicrobial activity using in vitro agar incorporation method and well diffusion methods respectively. The henna leaves extracts were able to inhibit the growth pattern of A. niger and F. oxysporum. Streptococcus sp. and S. aureus were alsoinhibited by the extracts. Inhibition of the microorganisms’ growth suggests that henna may be valuable in the management of burnt wound infections
A Violência no Local de Trabalho em Instituições de Saúde: Um Estudo Monocêntrico sobre Causas, Consequências e Estratégias de Prevenção
Introduction: Workplace violence is one of the main risk factors in the professional world. Healthcare workers are at higher risk when
compared to other sectors. Our study aimed to characterize physical and verbal violence in a public hospital and to define occupational
health prevention and surveillance strategies.
Material and Methods: Single center observational cross-sectional study, carried amongst healthcare workers in a public hospital in
Lisbon. A qualitative survey was carried out through six in-depth interviews. A quantitative survey was carried through questionnaires
delivered to 32 workers. A significance level of 5% was accepted in the assessment of statistical differences. The Mann-Whitney test
and the Fisher’s exact test were used to calculate p values.
Results: The main results are: (1) 41 violence incidents were reported in the quantitative phase; (2) 5/21 [23.81%] victims notified
the incident to the occupational health department; (3) 18/21 [85.71%] victims reported a permanent state of hypervigilance; (4) 22/28
[78.57%] participants self-reported poor or no familiarity with internal reporting procedures; (5) 24/28 [85.71%] participants believed it
is possible to minimize workplace violence.
Discussion: Workplace violence is favored by unrestricted access to working areas, absence of security guards and police officers
or scarce intervention. The low notification rate contributes to organizational lack of action. The state of hypervigilance reported in our
study reflects the negative effects of threatening occupational stressors on mental health.
Conclusion: Our results show that workplace violence is a relevant risk factor that significantly impacts workers’ health in a noxious
manner, deserving a tailored occupational health approach whose priority areas and strategies have been determined.Introdução: A violência no local de trabalho é um dos principais fatores de risco no mundo do trabalho. Os trabalhadores da saúde
