    The study deals with semi automatic extraction of urban risk related base data and their different generic aspects. Emphasis is given to the building footprint map which is a major base data. The main objective of the study is to extract Building Footprints from High Resolution Imagery using a semi automated approach. In this context the research mainly focuses on developing an integrated extraction to generate the risk related base data in an urban area from high resolution remote sensing images. A multi scale object oriented fuzzy classification of various urban settings was carried out. The method was applied in Dehradun, Uttaranchal, India. The city lies in the high seismic risk zone, also experiencing rapid urbanization due to its newly attained status of a state capital. The extracted base data maps were empirically evaluated by comparing them with visually interpreted reference maps. The evaluation of the extracted base data was carried out by both the quantitative and quality assessment techniques. It was observed that the building footprints extracted from fused Ikonos (PAN+XS) image gave acceptable accuracy for providing better management and better preparedness for any future disasters.     Enhancing Syndromic Surveillance through Autonomic Health Grids

    The Centers for Disease Control defines syndromic surveillance as, “an investigational approach where health department staff, assisted by automated data acquisition and generation of statistical alerts, monitor disease indicators in real-time or near real-time to detect outbreaks of disease earlier than would otherwise be possible with traditional public health methods” (CDC, 2004). While syndromic surveillance has traditionally been used in the context of detecting natural outbreaks, it is increasingly being used to develop systems to detect bioterrorism outbreaks. Timely response to a bioterrorism event requires accurate information exchange between clinicians and public health officials. This entails building highly complex surveillance systems that provide access to heterogeneous/distributed medical data, computational resources and collaborative services, for real-time decision making in a highly reliable and secure environment. In this paper we propose enhancing syndromic surveillance through grid and autonomic computing augmentations, and present our approach to a proof of concept modeling and simulation environment

    2MASS Studies of Differential Reddening Across Three Massive Globular Clusters

    J, H, and K_S band data from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) are used to study the effects of differential reddening across the three massive Galactic globular clusters Omega Centauri, NGC 6388, and NGC 6441. Evidence is found that variable extinction may produce false detections of tidal tails around Omega Centauri. We also investigate what appears to be relatively strong differential reddening towards NGC 6388 and NGC 6441, and find that differential extinction may be exaggerating the need for a metallicity spread to explain the width of the red giant branches for these two clusters. Finally, we consider the implications of these results for the connection between unusual, multipopulation globular clusters and the cores of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph).Comment: 40 pages, 14 figures.     Harassment and mental health in surgical training: A pilot survey of surgical trainees in Pakistan

    Objective: To assess harassment among surgical trainees and its effects on mental health, and to explore its association with gender.Methods: The nationwide cross-sectional pilot study was conducted by the Association of Women Surgeons of Pakistan from July to September 2019, and included surgical trainees of either gender working in both public and private hospitals. Data was collected using an anonymous online survey form to assess harassment and self-perceived burnout and depression. Data was analysed using SPSS 22.Results: Of the 147 respondents, 49(33.3%) were males; 98(66.6%) were females; and 118(80.3%) were residents. Workplace harassment was reported by 80(54.4%) trainees. Among the males it was reported by 24(49%) and among the females by 56(57%) (p=0.349). Of those having faced harassment, 9(11.3%) reported it to the administration. Severe self-perceived burnout was reported by 102(69.4%) respondents, and severe self-perceived depression by 69(46.9%). Respondents experiencing bullying were more likely to report severe self-perceived burnout than those not experiencing bullying (p=0.02). Multivariable logistic regression showed female gender to be significantly associated with sexual harassment (odds ratio: 4.261 [95% confidence interval: 1.067-17.019]) and severe self-perceived depression (odds ratio: 5.052 [95% confidence interval: 1.187-21.503]). Need for a support group was identified by 134(91.2%) trainees.Conclusions: An overwhelming need was found for trainee surgeon support groups and other interventions targeted at improving the workplace environment for surgical trainees in Pakistan
