    Cosmography in f(T)-gravity

    Being based on the only assumption that the universe is homogenous and isotropic on large scales, cosmography is an ideal tool to investigate the cosmic expansion history in a almost model-independent way. Fitting the data on the luminosity distance and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations allows to determine the confidence ranges for the cosmographic parameters hence giving some quantitative constraints that a whatever theory has to fulfill. As an application, we consider here the case of teleparallel gravity (TEGR) also referred to as f(T)-gravity. To this end, we first work out analytical expressions to express the present day values of f(T)-derivatives as a function of the cosmographic parameters which hold under quite general and physically motivated conditions. We then use the constraints coming from cosmography to find out the confidence ranges for f(T)-derivatives up to the fifth order and show how these can be used to check the viability of given TEGR models without the need to explicitly solve the second order dynamic equations.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Phys.     Constraints on scalar-tensor theories from observations

    We study the dynamical description of scalar-tensor gravity by performing the best-fit analysis for two cases of exponential and power-law form of the potential and scalar field function coupled to the curvature. The models are then tested against observational data. The results show that in both scenarios the Universe undergoes an acceleration expansion period and the geometrical equivalent of dark energy is associated with a time-dependent equation of state.Comment: 16 pages, 32 figure

    Association of serum fetuin-A and biochemical parameters in hemodialysis patients.

    Fetuin-A, a hepatic glycoprotein present in the circulation, is a potential inhibitor for systemic calcification. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the association between fetuin-A and other biochemical parameters as facilitator factors for developing atherosclerosis in hemodialysis (HD) patients. This case-control study was conducted on 44 HD patients undergoing treatment in 2012. Parathormone (i-PTH) and fetuin levels were performed by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) by chemiluminescence, low-density lipoprotein by direct enzymatic, calcium and albumin by colorimetric and phosphorous by ultraviolet (UV) methods. Chi-square was used for evaluating the association between variables and t-test was used for comparing the mean of the quantitative variables for the two groups. SPSS-16 software was used for data analysis and P-value less than 5% was considered as significant. Mean of serum fetuin level was 23.25 ± 4.90 ng/mL in HD patients and 32.92 ± 5.21 in the control group. Median of hs-CRP was 2.45 mg/dL in the patients and 1.00 mg/dL in the control group and i-PTH was 74.3 pg/mL in the patients and 7.30 pg/mL in the control group. The calcium-phosphorous product was 46.77 ± 14.22 mg/dL in the patient and 31.73 ± 6.48 mg/dL in the control group. A reverse significant association was found between fetuin-A and hs-CRP in this study. In this study, serum fetuin-A level in HD patients was lower than controls. Therefore, a low level of fetuin-A seems to be associated with atherosclerosis, inflammation and malnutrition

    Stability analysis of agegraphic dark energy in Brans-Dicke cosmology

    Stability analysis of agegraphic dark energy in Brans-Dicke theory is presented in this paper. We constrain the model parameters with the observational data and thus the results become broadly consistent with those expected from experiment. Stability analysis of the model without best fitting shows that universe may begin from an unstable state passing a saddle point and finally become stable in future. However, with the best fitted model, There is no saddle intermediate state. The agegraphic dark energy in the model by itself exhibits a phantom behavior. However, contribution of cold dark matter on the effective energy density modifies the state of teh universe from phantom phase to quintessence one. The statefinder diagnosis also indicates that the universe leaves an unstable state in the past, passes the LCDM state and finally approaches the sable state in future.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure

    Geometric and thermodynamic properties in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

    In this paper, the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics and entropy is revisited in the context of cosmological models in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the boundary of the universe is assumed to be enclosed by the dynamical apparent horizon. The model is best fitted with the observational data for distance modulus. The best fitted geometric and thermodynamic parameters such as equation of state parameter, deceleration parameter and entropy are derived. To link between thermodynamic and geometric parameters, the "entropy rate of change multiplied by the temperature" as a model independent thermodynamic state parameter is also derived.     Analysis of immumoreactivity of heterologously expressed non-structural protein 4B (NS4B) from Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) genotype 1a

    Background: Detection of hepatitis C virus specific antibodies is the initial step in chronic HCV diagnosis. HCV NS4B is among the most immunogenic HCV antigens and has been widely used in commercial Enzyme Immunoassays (EIA). Additionally, NS4B, a key protein in the virus replication, can be an alternative target for antiviral therapy. Objectives: Development of a new method for high-level expression and purification of NS4B coding region was the aim of the report. Materials and Methods: Viral RNA was purified from the serum of an HCV positive patient and NS4B coding region was amplified using nested RT-PCR. PCR products were cloned into pET102/D-TOPO expression vector and transformed into E. coli BL21. Induction was performed by adding 1mM isopropyl-β-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) to the culture medium. Immunoreactivity of the purified recombinant proteins was evaluated by immunoblotting and indirect enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The recombinant NS4B protein was expressed and its immunoreactivity was confirmed by ELISA and western blotting.     Establishment of a new immunological method for direct detection of Mycobacterium in solution

    Background/PurposeTuberculosis (TB) is a crucial health problem. Prevention of the disease requires rapid diagnosis. Rapid liquid culture systems, nucleic acid amplification tests, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are among the rapid tests used for detecting Mycobacterium species. However, these tests are expensive and require extensive equipment and expertise, which is hardly affordable in resource-poor countries. Although direct microscopy is performed routinely as an initial step for detection of the bacteria, it is not sufficiently sensitive. As a result, we thought of establishing a low-cost immunological test that can potentially replace direct microscopy with higher sensitivity and specificity.MethodsThe assay is based on pre-incubation of biotinylated rabbit antibody against Antigen 60 (A60) with a solution containing Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) or Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) followed by incubation with a streptavidin–alkaline phosphatase (STA–ALP) conjugate. The test is devised in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and non-ELISA formats, therefore it does not require extensive facilities and expertise.ResultsThe ELISA format showed a 100-fold improvement in the lower detection limit of BCG compared with direct microscopy. With the non-ELISA formats, there was a 2- and 16-fold improvement for the cartridge assay and the microfuge tube assay, respectively.ConclusionIn conclusion, we successfully detected BCG and MTB in solution using the new immunological method. Our results are very promising and the new immunological method could potentially replace direct microscopy with higher sensitivity and specificity

    The universe dynamics in the tachyon cosmology with non-minimal coupling to matter

    Recently, the tachyon cosmology has been represented as dark energy model to support the current acceleration of the universe without phantom crossing. In this paper, we study the dynamics of the tachyon cosmology in which the field plays the role of tachyon field and also non--minimally coupled to the matter lagrangian. The model shows current universe acceleration and also phantom crossing in the future. Two cosmological tests are also performed to validate the model; the difference in the distance modulus and the model independent Cosmological Redshift Drift (CRD) test.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure

    Cosmic Evolution in Brans-Dicke Chameleon Cosmology

    We have investigated the Brans-Dicke Chameleon theory of gravity and obtained exact solutions of the scale factor a(t)a(t), scalar field ϕ(t)\phi(t), an arbitrary function f(ϕ)f(\phi) which interact with the matter Lagrangian in the action of the Brans-Dicke Chameleon theory and potential V(ϕ)V(\phi) for different epochs of the cosmic evolution. We plot the functions a(t)a(t), ϕ(t)\phi(t), f(t)f(t) and V(ϕ)V(\phi) for different values of the Brans-Dicke parameter. In our models, there is no accelerating solution, only decelerating one with q>0q>0. The physical cosmological distances have been investigated carefully.
