The first grade of medical student have higher risk of anxiety in theiracademic activity. This is caused by several things such as academic pressure, neweducational environment, and high expectation from family, society, themselves andteacher staff. Academic anxiety can influence self regulated learning of student. Theaim of this research was to discover the relationship between academic anxiety andself regulated learning of the first grade of medical student in Medical Faculty ofRiau University class 2013. This was analytical research with cross sectional design. The subject of this research was student of Medical Faculty of Riau University class2013. Total sample in this research was 101 people which were taken with totalsampling technique. This research used quesionaire of academic anxiety andquesionaire of self regulated learning that was based on Wolters theory. Thestatistical test used to discover the relationship of academic anxiety with selfregulated learning was spearman test. The result of this research showed that therewas no relation between academic anxiety with self regulated learning (p= 0,739 ; r=-0,034). But there was a relation in the characteristic of academic anxiety (missattention) with self regulated learning (p=0,016 ; r=0,239)

This study aims to explain the effect of socio-demographic variables i.e. sex, wage, employment status, and marital status on commuting in Jabodetabek. The result of binary logistic regression using Sakernas 2012 shows that male are more likely to commute than female. Male in formal sector have the highest probability to commute while by marital status, unmarried male have the highest probability to commute. The level of wage is positively related with the probability to commute although at certain level of wage, an increase in wage increases probability to commute among male lower than probability to commute among female

Probucol treatment is associated with an ABCA1-independent mechanism of cholesterol efflux to lipid poor apolipoproteins from foam cell macrophages

Objective Probucol is a cholesterol-lowering agent whose ability to prevent atherosclerosis is currently under study. Herein, we investigate the putative mechanism of probucol by observation of changes in cellular cholesterol efflux and lipid droplet morphology in macrophages. Results The inhibitory activity of probucol was assessed in non-foam or foam cell macrophages expressing ABCA1 generated by treatment with fetal calf serum (FCS) alone or in combination with acetylated LDL, respectively. Probucol inhibited cholesterol efflux to apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) by 31.5±0.1% in THP-1 non-foam cells and by 18.5±0.2% in foam cells. In probucol-treated non-foam THP-1 cells, nascent high-density lipoprotein (nHDL) particles with a diameter < 7 nm were generated, while in probucol-treated THP-1 foam cells nHDL particles of > 7 nm in diameter containing cholesterol were produced. Foam cells also displayed a significant accumulation of free cholesterol at the plasma membrane, as measured by percent cholestenone formed. Intracellularly, there was a significant decrease in lipid droplet number and an increase in size in probucol-treated THP-1 foam cells when compared to non-treated cells. Conclusions We report for the first time that probucol is unable to completely inhibit cholesterol efflux in foam cells to the same extent as in non-foam cells. Indeed, functional nHDL is released from foam cells in the presence of probucol. This difference in inhibitory effect could potentially be explained by changes in the plasma membrane pool as well as intracellular cholesterol storage independently of ABCA1

Quality of Mango (Mangifera indica ‘Carabao’) Grown in Farms Subjected to Site-Specific Pest Management Strategies

The ‘Carabao’ mango, a commercially important fruit crop, is prone to attacks of pests and diseases in all stages of development. The judicious use of pesticides must often be complemented with other control measures. Site-specific pest management programs were drawn for three mango farms in Mati, Davao Oriental, Philippines. These included calendar spraying, no bagging, bagging (with or without insecticide-impregnated plastic strips), and pesticide spray decision tool. The mango leafhopper population was controlled while panicle and blossom blight was slight in the three farms. Yields did not statistically vary. Foliar application tended to improve yields while bagging with insectide-impregnated plastic strips reduced scale/mealy bug damage in farm 2. In farm 1, no yield increase was noted when a second application of flower inducer was done. Increases in percentages of grade 1 fruit as well as reductions in rejects were distinctly exhibited in harvested produce from the three farms. Size quality profile of two farms showed increases in percentage of medium or large fruit while another farm showed a reduction in super small fruit. Prevalent quality defects observed were misshapen, scab, undersized, windscar, and veins. Postharvest infection due to anthracnose was slight while stem end rot was nil. Visual quality and shelf life appeared better in fruit harvested from trees protected from pests using spray decision tool and bagging. Further, the reduction in pesticide costs ranged from 4% to 42%

Synthesis and characterization of fructosyltransferase from Aspergillus oryzae ipt-301 for high fructooligosaccharides production

    Get PDF
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are mainly produced by microbial fructosyltransferases (FTase, E.C.2.4.1.9), and Aspergillus oryzae IPT-301 has shown high fructosyl transferring and low hydrolytic activities, which leads to high FOS production yields, but the main operating parameters for its best performance have been scarcely studied. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the cellular growth, production and characterization of mycelial and extracellular FTases by Aspergillus oryzae IPT-301. Experimental design showed that the extracellular FTase performance was optimized (high transfructosylation activity and low hydrolytic activity) for reaction pH 5.5 - 6.75 and temperature of 45-50 °C and was fitted by the Michaelis-Menten model, while the mycelial FTase showed better performance at pH below 6.5 and temperature above 46 °C and was better fitted by the Hill model. The results obtained showed that the fungus represents a promising source for FOS production on a laboratorial scale. The authors gratefully acknowledge The State of Minas Gerais Research Foundation (FAPEMIG, Process APQ-02131-14) for providing financial support and the Institute for Technological Research (IPT/SP)/Programa Novos Talentos, through an individual research grant attributed to Cristiane Angélica Ottoni.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
