    What Counts as ‘World Class’? : Global University Rankings and Shifts in Institutional Strategies

    Global university rankings have emerged as a benchmark of institutional success, setting standards for higher education policymaking and institutional practices. Nevertheless, only a marginal share of higher education institutions (HEI) are in a realistic position to be ranked as a ‘world-class’ institutions. In the European context, the global rankings have been used to highlight a performance gap between European and North American institutions. Here the focus has been on the HEIs in the top-100 positions, causing concerns over European higher education. This has also become a marker of world-class university. We analyze the strategies of 27 Northern European universities in different tiers to learn how they have adjusted to the reality of ranking. We conclude that the references to global rankings have increased between 2014 and 2018. At the same time, the references to rankings have become more implicit in nature. Nevertheless, we find that the discourse of global comparison and excellence has become more common in the strategies. There are also emerging references to the regional role of universities, which are apparent in the strategies of universities that are clearly outside the top-100 ranked institutions. However, this is also a reflection of the discourse of world-class university.Peer reviewe

    The results of the research project ''Remediation of contaminated soils by electro-osmosis'' are reported. Electro-osmosis and electro-dislocation are the two most important pollutant transport mechanisms in soil electro-remediation. Electro-osmosis is an electro-kinetic effect permitting to dislocate soil liquid in relation to the charged surface of soil particles when an electric field is applied. Because of this convective flow, the transport of dissolved, uncharged pollutants such as organic compounds becomes possible.- The research project investigated basic phenomena of the heavy-metal electro-remediation of fine pored soils. The model system chosen is a zinc contamination in china clay. The cleaning effect depends strongly on the changes of the pH value due to the decomposition of water by the electrodes. (orig./SR)Der vorliegende Bericht beschreibt die Ergebnisse des Forschungsprojekts 'Elektroosmose zur Sanierung kontaminierter Boeden'. Elektroosmose und Elektrowanderung sind die beiden wichtigsten Transportmechanismen fuer Schadstoffe bei der Elektrosanierung. Elektroosmose ist ein elektrokinetischer Effekt, durch den die Bodenfluessigkeit gegenueber der geladen Oberflaeche der Bodenteilchen bewegt werden kann, sobald ein elektrisches Feld angelegt wird. Durch diese konvektive Stroemung ist der Transport von geloesten, ungeladenen Schadstoffen wie organischen Verbindungen moeglich. Das Forschungsprojekt beinhaltet die Untersuchung von grundlegenden Phaenomenen an der Schwermetall-Elektrosanierung feinporiger Boeden. Als Modellsystem ist eine Zinkkontamination in Kaolinton gewaehlt. Der Reinigungserfolg ist dabei sehr stark abhaengig von den Aenderungen des pH-Wertes, die von den Elektroden ausgehen aufgrund der Zersetzung von Wasser.     Synthesis and characterization of functional diblock copolymers

    In this context materials with a fluorine content varying in a large range have been synthesized and characterized by different techniques. The ATRP technique was found as a suitable tool to control the Mn and also the PDI of the polymers. Materials with low fluorine content were synthesized by use of fluorine containing initiators leaving the fluorine cluster at one end. Highly fluorinated materials were prepared by use of fluorine rich monomers TFMS, 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropoxy)styrene [TF(F5)S] and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8, 8,8-pentadecafluorooctaoxy)styrene [TF(F15)S], resulting in both homopolymers as well as block copolymers. Materials with an intermediate fluorine content were achieved by copolymerization of these monomers with styrene. The TF(F5)S and TF(F15)S are another two new monomers subjected for ATRP. These monomers were synthesized by a nucleophilic substitution reaction between FS and its corresponding alcohol. The structures of the monomers were confirmed by 1H-, 13C-, 19F-NMR and also by FT-IR spectroscopy. The ATRP of these monomers results in fast polymerization and high yields. Polymers with relatively low PDI and in a broad range of Mn were synthesized. The block copolymers phase separate into PS/PFS phases as evidenced by two Tgs when the shortest block constitutes more than 10 mol %. A preliminary surface characterization of these polymers was performed by XPS and by measurement of the contact angle with water.
