Alternatives to Liberal Constitutional Democracy
The global appeal of liberal constitutional democracy—defined as a competitive multiparty system combined with governance within constitutional limits—cannot be taken for granted due to the existence of competing forms of government that appear successful along a number of practical dimensions and consequently enjoy high levels of public acceptance. Proponents of liberal constitutional democracy must be prepared to proactively explain and defend its capacity to satisfy first-order political needs. A system of government is unlikely to command popular acceptance unless it can plausibly claim to address the problems of oppression, tribalism, and physical and economic security.
Along these dimensions, the advantages of liberal constitutional democracy over the alternatives of social democracy of the type seen in Scandinavia, and bureaucratic authoritarianism of the type seen in parts of Asia, are not self-evident. Within Asia alone, seemingly functional alternatives to liberal constitutional democracy run the gamut from illiberal nondemocracy in China, to liberal one-party rule in Japan, to illiberal constitutional democracy in Singapore, to liberal constitutional nondemocracy in Hong Kong, to hereditary monarchy in Bhutan

The game of basketball serves as a fitting metaphor for the conflicts and tensions of life. It involves both cooperation and competition, selflessness and ego. In the hands of a gifted writer like Sherman Alexie, those paradoxes become even deeper and more revealing. In his short story collections, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven and The Toughest Indian in the World, his debut novel, Reservation Blues, and his recent young adult novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Alexie uses basketball to explore the ironies of American Indian reservation life and the tensions between traditional lifeways and contemporary social realities. So central is basketball to the Lone Ranger and Tonto short story collection, in fact, that the paperback edition\u27s cover depicts a salmon - the Coeur d\u27Alene Indians are fishermen - flying over a basketball hoop
Survivalism, Corruptionism, and Mereology
Corruptionism is the view that following physical death, the human being ceases to exist but their soul persists in the afterlife. Survivalism holds that both the human being and their soul persist in the afterlife, as distinct entities, with the soul constituting the human. Each position has its defenders, most of whom appeal both to metaphysical considerations and to the authority of St Thomas Aquinas. Corruptionists claim that survivalism violates a basic principle of any plausible mereology, while survivalists tend to reject the principle, though without as much detail as one would like. In this paper I examine both the key exegetical issues and the mereological question, arguing that Aquinas cannot be shown to have supported the principle in question, and that the principle should be rejected on independent grounds. If correct, some key planks in support of survivalism are established, with others to await further examination
On the detection of characteristic optical emission from electronically coupled nanoemitters
Optical emission from an electronically coupled pair of nanoemitters is investigated, in a new theoretical development prompted by experimental work on oriented semiconductor polymer nanostructures. Three physically distinct mechanisms for photon emission by such a pair, positioned in the near-field, are identified: emission from a pairdelocalized exciton state, emission that engages electrodynamic coupling through quantum interference, and correlated photon emission from the two components of the pair. Each possibility is investigated, in detail, by examination of the emission signal via explicit coupling of the nanoemitter pair with a photodetector, enabling calculations to give predictive results in a form directly tailored for experiment. The analysis incorporates both near- and far-field properties (determined from the detector-pair displacement), so that the framework is applicable not only to a conventional remote detector, but also a near-field microscope setup. The results prove strongly dependent on geometry and selection rules. This work paves the way for a broader investigation of pairwise coupling effects in the optical emission from structured nanoemitter arrays
