Spreading of wave packets in disordered systems with tunable nonlinearity

We study the spreading of single-site excitations in one-dimensional disordered Klein-Gordon chains with tunable nonlinearity ∣ul∣σul|u_{l}|^{\sigma} u_{l} for different values of σ\sigma. We perform extensive numerical simulations where wave packets are evolved a) without and, b) with dephasing in normal mode space. Subdiffusive spreading is observed with the second moment of wave packets growing as tαt^{\alpha}. The dependence of the numerically computed exponent α\alpha on σ\sigma is in very good agreement with our theoretical predictions both for the evolution of the wave packet with and without dephasing (for σ≥2\sigma \geq 2 in the latter case). We discuss evidence of the existence of a regime of strong chaos, and observe destruction of Anderson localization in the packet tails for small values of σ\sigma.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

Multilayer gas cells for sub-Doppler spectroscopy

We have carried out theoretical research on ultra-high resolution spectroscopy of atoms (or molecules) in the suggested cell with a series of plane-parallel thin gas layers between spatially separated gas regions of this cell for optical pumping and probing. It is shown the effective velocity selection of optically pumped atoms because of their specific transit time and collisional relaxation in such a cell, which lead to narrow sub-Doppler resonances in absorption of the probe monochromatic light beam. Resolution of this spectroscopic method is analyzed in cases of stationary and definite nonstationary optical pumping of atoms by the broadband radiation versus geometrical parameters of given cells and pumping intensity. The suggested multilayer gas cell is the compact analog of many parallel atomic (molecular) beams and may be used also as the basis of new compact optical frequency standards of high accuracy.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

    Stabilization of heterodimensional cycles

We consider diffeomorphisms ff with heteroclinic cycles associated to saddles PP and QQ of different indices. We say that a cycle of this type can be stabilized if there are diffeomorphisms close to ff with a robust cycle associated to hyperbolic sets containing the continuations of PP and QQ. We focus on the case where the indices of these two saddles differ by one. We prove that, excluding one particular case (so-called twisted cycles that additionally satisfy some geometrical restrictions), all such cycles can be stabilized.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figure

Quantum techniques using continuous variables of light

    Get PDF
We present schemes for the generation and evaluation of continuous variable entanglement of bright optical beams and give a brief overview of the variety of optical techniques and quantum communication applications on this basis. A new entanglement-based quantum interferometry scheme with bright beams is suggested. The performance of the presented schemes is independent of the relative interference phase which is advantageous for quantum communication applications.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures; minor correction, accepted versio

Chemo-dynamical Evolution of the ISM in Galaxies

Chemo-dynamical models have been introduced in the late eighties and are a generally accepted tool for understanding galaxy evolution. They have been successfully applied to one-dimensional problems, e.g. the evolution of non-rotating galaxies, and two-dimensional problems, e.g. the evolution of disk galaxies. Recently, also three-dimensional chemo-dynamical models have become available. In these models the dynamics of different components, i.e. dark matter, stars and a multi-phase interstellar medium, are treated in a self-consistent way and several processes allow for an exchange of matter, energy and momentum between the components or different gas phases. Some results of chemo-dynamical models and their comparison with observations of chemical abundances or star formation histories will be reviewed.Comment: 10 Pages, 5 Figures, to appear in "From Observations to Self-Consistent Modelling of the ISM in Galaxies", 2003, eds M.
