    Low-Jitter Clock Multiplication: a Comparioson between PLLs and DLLs

    This paper shows that, for a given power budget, a practical phase-locked loop (PLL)-based clock multiplier generates less jitter than a delay-locked loop (DLL) equivalent. This is due to the fact that the delay cells in a PLL ring-oscillator can consume more power per cell than their counterparts in the DLL. We can show that this effect is stronger than the notorious jitter accumulation effect that occurs in the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) of a PLL. First, an analysis of the stochastic-output jitter of the architectures, due to the most important noise sources, is presented. Then, another important source of jitter in a DLL-based clock multiplier is treated, namely the stochastic mismatch in the delay cells which compose the DLL voltage-controlled delay line (VCDL). An analysis is presented that relates the stochastic spread of the delay of the cells to the output jitter of the clock multiplier. A circuit design technique, called impedance level scaling, is then presented which allows the designer to optimize the noise and mismatch behavior of a circuit, independently from other specifications such as speed and linearity. Applying this technique on a delay cell design yields a direct tradeoff between noise induced jitter and power usage, and between stochastic mismatch induced jitter and power usage

    Modelling survival and connectivity of Mnemiopsis leidyi in the south-western North Sea and Scheldt estuaries

    Three different models were applied to study the reproduction, survival and dispersal of Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Scheldt estuaries and the southern North Sea: a high-resolution particle tracking model with passive particles, a low-resolution particle tracking model with a reproduction model coupled to a biogeochemical model, and a dynamic energy budget (DEB) model. The results of the models, each with its strengths and weaknesses, suggest the following conceptual situation: (i) the estuaries possess enough retention capability to keep an overwintering population, and enough exchange with coastal waters of the North Sea to seed offshore populations; (ii) M. leidyi can survive in the North Sea, and be transported over considerable distances, thus facilitating connectivity between coastal embayments; (iii) under current climatic conditions, M. leidyi may not be able to reproduce in large numbers in coastal and offshore waters of the North Sea, but this may change with global warming; however, this result is subject to substantial uncertainty. Further quantitative observational work is needed on the effects of temperature, salinity and food availability on reproduction and on mortality at different life stages to improve models such as used here

    A free account or not? Its effect upon information yield in strategic interviews with suspects

    Asking suspects for a free account (FA) at the start of an interview is considered good practice in a growing number of police organisations, whereas in others it still is not commonplace. This study explored whether interviews with or without such an invitation yielded more information from guilty suspects. Students in safety and security committed a mock crime and were then interviewed using a strategy of gradual disclosure of evidence, in the experimental condition preceded with an FA invitation (n = 20) and without such an invitation in the control condition (n = 17). On average, relatively little information was collected in the FA phase and far more in the subsequent gradual disclosure phase. However, the FA condition yielded seven confessions, four of which were given already in the FA phase. The No FA condition yielded only two confessions. Other differences in yield were not found. These findings indicate that an FA invitation could lead to some relevant and important information, such as a confession, being gathered already at an early stage of an interview, and that such an invitation does not hamper the gathering of further information later in the interview

    Cerebrospinal Fluid Sex Steroid Hormones in Bacterial Meningitis

    Unfavorable outcome in bacterial meningitis is related to excessive inflammation and higher inflammatory markers have been reported in female than in male patients. Sex steroid hormones have immunomodulatory properties and can be found in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); however, their actions have not been studied in bacterial meningitis. We investigated the association between CSF sex steroid hormone levels and inflammatory parameters, disease severity, and outcome in pneumococcal meningitis. We identified adults with culture-proven pneumococcal meningitis in a prospective cohort study (2006-2014). We measured estradiol and testosterone in CSF using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) using an enzyme-linked immunoassay. Hormone levels were compared according to outcome, which was graded using the Glasgow Outcome Scale (a score of 5 indicating favorable, 1-4 unfavorable outcome). Correlation analysis was used to measure the association between hormone levels and inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and complement factors as well as severity of illness, as measured by the Glasgow Coma Scale and the Dutch Meningitis Risk Score. We included 60 patients: 20 men, 20 premenopausal (50 years) women. Twenty-one (35%) patients had an unfavorable outcome and 11 (18%) died. Cases with an unfavorable outcome exhibited higher estradiol (median 14.0 vs 5.0 pmol/L, P = .04) and lower SHBG (0.40 vs 1.0 nmol/L, P = .03) levels compared with those with a favorable outcome. Estradiol was positively correlated with C-reactive protein (R = 0.42, P = .001), CSF protein (R = 0.33, P = .01), and proinflammatory cytokine levels. CSF concentrations of the sex steroid hormone estradiol were associated with outcome and CSF inflammation.     Vortex Solid-Liquid Transition in Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8+δ_{8+\delta} with a High Density of Strong Pins

    The introduction of a large density of columnar defects in %underdoped Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8+δ_{8+\delta} crystals does not, at sufficiently low vortex densities, increase the irreversibility line beyond the first order transition (FOT) field of pristine crystals. At such low fields, the flux line wandering length rwr_{w} behaves as in pristine %Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8+δ_{8+\delta} crystals. Next, vortex positional correlations along the cc--axis in the vortex Bose glass at fields above the FOT are smaller than in the low--field vortex solid. Third, the Bose-glass-to-vortex liquid transition is signaled by a rapid decrease in c-axis phase correlations.
