    On-site wastewater reuse technology options in Australia

    Domestic wastewater reuse is currently not permitted anywhere in Australia but is widely supported by the community, promoted by researchers, and improvised by up to 20% of householders. Its widespread implementation will make an enormous contribution to the sustainability of water resources. Integrated with other strategies in the outdoor living environment of settlements in arid lands great benefit will be derived. This paper describes six options for wastewater reuse under research by the Remote Area Developments Group (RADG) at Murdoch University and case studies are given where productive use is being made for revegetation and food production strategies at household and community scales. Pollution control techniques, public health precautions and maintenance requirements are described. The special case of remote Aboriginal communities is explained where prototype systems have been installed by RADG to generate windbreaks and orchards. New Australian design standards and draft guidelines for domestic greywater reuse produced by the Western Australian state government agencies for mainstream communities are evaluated. It is recommended that dry composting toilets be coupled with domestic greywater reuse and the various types available in Australia are described. For situations where only the flushing toilet will suffice the unique "net composting" system can be used and this also is described. A vision for household and community-scale on-site application is presented

    Knowledge and Skills of Emergency Care During Disaster for Community Health Volunteers: a Literature Review

    Background: Nowadays, disaster preparedness and responses are essential for everyone to be involved since the disaster becomes increasing. The Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) in particular are the key partners required adequately prepared in emergency care during disaster event. Purpose: The study aims to examine the essential knowledge and skills of emergency care during natural disaster for CHVs. Method: The reviews published during 2000 and 2011 searching from PubMed, Science Direct, CINAHL, ProQuest Medical Library were conducted. Result: Twenty-four articles and documents related to community-based disaster preparedness programs were intensively reviewed. Based on the review, six components of knowledge and skills for emergency care in natural disaster for CHVs are required including 1) early warning, 2) disaster triage, 3) first aid, 4) search and rescue, 5) logistic and communication, and 6) team organizations. Conclusion: There was a few studies focusing on the emergency care in disaster management and some factors related to knowledge and skills were shown. It is therefore recommended that the current CHVs' knowledge and skills should be explored in order to assist people in their community following disaster event when professional responders are not immediately available to help

    We study non-linear phenomena in double barrier heterostructures. Systems in 3D under the effect of an external magnetic field along the current and 1D systems are analyzed. Non-linearities are reflected in the I-V characteristic curve as bistabilities, instabilities and time dependent oscillations of the currents.     Mineralogical Characterization and Chemical Properties of Soils as a Consideration for Establishing Sustainable Soil Management Strategies

    Problems of soil limiting factors affecting crop growth were not fully understood owing to little attention has been given to soil mineralogy and its association to soil chemical properties. The objective of the study was to assess soil mineralogical and chemical properties of seven soils derived from different parentmaterials as an integrated strategic consideration to establish soil management. Field study was carried out in 2009. Soils were sampled from each horizon of profiles. Results showed that primary and secondary minerals had a strong effect on soil chemical properties. The sand fraction of soils derived from basalt, gabbro, mica schist and serpentinite was dominated by resistant minerals (quartz or opaques), leading to very limited, if any, nutrients released from parent materials. The clay fraction was dominated by kaolinite for soils derived frombasalt, mica schist and gabbaro, and by amorphous materials for the soil derived from serpentinite resulting in low soil cation exchange capacity (CEC). For other three soils derived from volcanic tuff, volcanic basaltic andesite and volcanic ash, the easily weatherable minerals (feldspar and ferromagnesian) were dominant, suggesting the high reserved nutrients. The presence of halloysite and smectite minerals in the soil derived from volcanic tuff resulted in high soil CEC, while the dominance of amorphous materials in soils derived from volcanic basaltic andesite and volcanic ash was responsible for the low CEC. Forsoils derived from basalt, serpentinite, mica schist and gabbro, therefore, the strategic management should be directed to restore soil CEC, pH, exchangeable cations and P content. For soils derived from volcanic tuff, volcanic basaltic andesite and volcanic ash, the presence of easily weatherable minerals indicated many reserved nutrients; hence the soil management is directed for replenishment of nutrients removed by crops

    Phonon Rabi-assisted tunneling in diatomic molecules

    We study electronic transport in diatomic molecules connected to metallic contacts in the regime where both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions are important. We find that the competition between these interactions results in unique resonant conditions for interlevel transitions and polaron formation: the Coulomb repulsion requires additional energy when electrons attempt phonon-assisted interlevel jumps between fully or partially occupied levels. We apply the equations of motion approach to calculate the electronic Green's functions. The density of states and conductance through the system are shown to exhibit interesting Rabi-like splitting of Coulomb blockade peaks and strong temperature dependence under the it interacting resonant conditions.Comment: Updated version, 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys.     Diponegoro University is a State University in Central Java. FIB, FH, and FISIP is part of some faculty at UNDIP. The layout of the three faculty are close each other. One of the problems from the three faculty is parking space requirements. Although it has provided a parking space (off street parking) in each faculty, but in reality there are many vehicles parked on the roadside (on street parking). This final report aims to evaluate the need of existing parking spaces and planned capacity expansion of existing parking spaces. Methodologies used include: field surveys, problem identification, data collection, test of the validity with chi-square test, data analysis, calculation of SRP needs, arrangement of the old park and planning of new park. The number of the current shortage of parking space requirements for overall three faculty is 91 SRP for cars and 59 SRP for motorcycles. Meanwhile for the development of the next 5 years is 138 SRP for cars and 466 SRP for motorcycles. Development of parking area with the integrated construction for FIB, FH, and FISIP are given alternative. Construction of the integrated parking building is planned 3 floors with total floor area of 5775 m². 1st floor with area of 1925 m² can serve 468 SRP motorcycles and 15 SRP cars. 2nd floor and 3rd floor with the same area is able to serve 62 SRP cars. Based on the analysis of the calculation, planning is considered to have been able to solve the needs of today and the parking spaces for the development of the next 5 years is until 2017. To solving the possibility of the occurrence of on-street parking, the solution is given by the installation of parking prohibition signs around the side of the road
