PROTON STRUCTURE FUNCTION CALCULATION BY THERMODYNAMICAL BAG MODEL
This paper focuses on finding proton structure functions in deep inelastic scattering of leptons on nucleons by MIT Bag model. This model proposed by V. Devanathan and S. Karthiyayini assumes that nucleon is a hot bag containing quarks, which interact with bosons. The nucleon structure function is then expressed in terms of Parton distribution functions where both are functions of Bjorken variable ð‘¥ only. The structure functions calculated by this model are found to be in good agreement with the data obtained from CERN for Bjorken variable ð‘¥ greater than 0.2 only
Faster linearizability checking via -compositionality
Linearizability is a well-established consistency and correctness criterion
for concurrent data types. An important feature of linearizability is Herlihy
and Wing's locality principle, which says that a concurrent system is
linearizable if and only if all of its constituent parts (so-called objects)
are linearizable. This paper presents -compositionality, which generalizes
the idea behind the locality principle to operations on the same concurrent
data type. We implement -compositionality in a novel linearizability
checker. Our experiments with over nine implementations of concurrent sets,
including Intel's TBB library, show that our linearizability checker is one
order of magnitude faster and/or more space efficient than the state-of-the-art
algorithm.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure
Dietary Berries and Ellagic Acid Prevent Oxidative DNA Damage and Modulate Expression of DNA Repair Genes
DNA damage is a pre-requisite for the initiation of cancer and agents that reduce this damage are useful in cancer prevention. In this study, we evaluated the ability of whole berries and berry phytochemical, ellagic acid to reduce endogenous oxidative DNA damage. Ellagic acid was selected based on >95% inhibition of 8-oxodeoxyguosine (8-oxodG) and other unidentified oxidative DNA adducts induced by 4-hydroxy-17ß-estradiol and CuCl2 in vitro. Inhibition of the latter occurred at lower concentrations (10 μM) than that for 8-oxodG (100 μM). In the in vivo study, female CD-1 mice (n=6) were fed either a control diet or diet supplemented with ellagic acid (400 ppm) and dehydrated berries (5% w/w) with varying ellagic acid contents – blueberry (low), strawberry (medium) and red raspberry (high), for 3 weeks. Blueberry and strawberry diets showed moderate reductions in endogenous DNA adducts (25%). However, both red raspberry and ellagic acid diets showed a significant reduction of 59% (p < 0.001) and 48% (p < 0.01), respectively. Both diets also resulted in a 3–8 fold over-expression of genes involved in DNA repair such as xeroderma pigmentosum group A complementing protein (XPA), DNA excision repair protein (ERCC5) and DNA ligase III (DNL3). These results suggest that red raspberry and ellagic acid reduce endogenous oxidative DNA damage by mechanisms which may involve increase in DNA repair
Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery: A midterm experience of a rare entity at a tertiary care center
ALCAPA is a rare congenital heart disease. Presentation varies from asymptomatic to progressive heart failure and death. Surgical repair is indicated in all patients with a goal of restoring two coronary systems. Data was analysed in regard to presenting features, echocardiographic findings, various surgical approaches used and immediate, early and midterm post-operative results. Most common presentation was growth failure and seen in 6 patients. One patient was taken for elective PDA ligation and diagnosis of ALCAPA was made on table after PDA ligation as patient crashed subsequently. Aortocoronary button transfer was most commonly used surgical technique while 2 patients needed interposition grafting. LV function improved in 5 out of 8 patients with regression of MR. A median improvement of 5+-2% was observed in ejection fraction of 5 patients. Early surgery with aortocoronary transfer offers good results with gradual improvement in LV dysfunction and mitral regurgitation
Approximation of excitonic absorption in disordered systems using a compositional component weighted CPA
Employing a recently developed technique of component weighted two particle
Green's functions in the CPA of a binary substitutional alloy we
extend the existing theory of excitons in such media using a contact potential
model for the interaction between electrons and holes to an approximation which
interpolates correctly between the limits of weak and strong disorder. With our
approach we are also able to treat the case where the contact interaction
between carriers varies between sites of different types, thus introducing
further disorder into the system. Based on this approach we study numerically
how the formation of exciton bound states changes as the strengths of the
contact potentials associated with either of the two site types are varied
through a large range of parameter values.Comment: 27 pages RevTeX (preprint format), 13 Postscript figure file
Reciprocal Changes in Sagittal Alignment in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Patients Following Strategic Pedicle Screw Fixation
Study DesignRetrospective observational study.PurposeTo analyze the effect of low-density (LD) strategic pedicle screw fixation on the correction of coronal and sagittal parameters in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients.Overview of LiteratureLD screw fixation achieves favorable coronal correction, but its effect on sagittal parameters is not well established. AIS is often associated with decreased thoracic kyphosis (TK), and the use of multi-level pedicle screws may result in further flattening of the sagittal profile.MethodsA retrospective analysis was performed on 92 patients with AIS to compare coronal and sagittal parameters preoperatively and at 2-year follow-up. All patients underwent posterior correction via LD strategic pedicle screw fixation. Radiographs were analyzed for primary Cobb angle (PCA), coronal imbalance, cervical sagittal angle (CSA), TK, lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt (PT), sacral slope (SS), C7 plumb line, spino-sacral angle, curve flexibility, and screw density.ResultsPCA changed significantly from 57.6°±13.9° to 19°±8.4° (p 40°) showed significant correction of TK (p <0.0001 in both). Sacro-pelvic parameters showed a significant decrease of PT and increase of SS, suggesting a reduction in pelvic retroversion SS (from 37° to 40°, p =0.0001) and PT (from 15° to 14°, p =0.025).ConclusionsLD strategic pedicle screw fixation provides favorable coronal correction and improves overall sagittal sacro-pelvic parameters. This technique does not cause significant flattening of TK and results in a favorable restoration of TK in patients with hypokyphosis or hyperkyphosis
How are "teaching the teachers" courses in evidence based medicine evaluated? A systematic review
Background
Teaching of evidence-based medicine (EBM) has become widespread in medical education. Teaching the teachers (TTT) courses address the increased teaching demand and the need to improve effectiveness of EBM teaching. We conducted a systematic review of assessment tools for EBM TTT courses. To summarise and appraise existing assessment methods for teaching the teachers courses in EBM by a systematic review.
Methods
We searched PubMed, BioMed, EmBase, Cochrane and Eric databases without language restrictions and included articles that assessed its participants. Study selection and data extraction were conducted independently by two reviewers.
Results
Of 1230 potentially relevant studies, five papers met the selection criteria. There were no specific assessment tools for evaluating effectiveness of EBM TTT courses. Some of the material available might be useful in initiating the development of such an assessment tool.
Conclusion
There is a need for the development of educationally sound assessment tools for teaching the teachers courses in EBM, without which it would be impossible to ascertain if such courses have the desired effect
Impact of Patient Counseling and Socioeconomic Factors on Initiation of Rehabilitation Program in Spinal Cord Injury Patients Presenting to a Tertiary Spine Unit in India
Study Design Prospective case series. Purpose This study aimed to investigate the impact of education, financial income, occupation, and patient counseling on the timing of enrolment in a spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation program. Overview of Literature A rehabilitation program following SCI is essential to improve functional outcomes. Socioeconomic factors can affect the timing of enrolment to a rehabilitation program. Literature on the effects of socioeconomic factors among patients with SCI in the Indian scenario is limited. Methods A prospective, consecutive analysis of patients with SCI was performed with 1-year follow-up. Assessment of the timing of enrolment to a rehabilitation program was performed using the modified Kuppuswamy socioeconomic scores (MKSS). Patients admitted to the SCI unit (group A), underwent intensive individual, group, and family counseling sessions to encourage early enrolment into a rehabilitation program. Patients presenting directly for rehabilitation (group B) were analyzed for comparison. Results A total of 153 patients were recruited. Group A was composed of 122 patients who started the rehabilitation program after a mean of 28 days, compared with a mean of 149 days for 31 patients in group B. In group A, 104 patients (85%; mean MKSS, 14.02) and 18 patients (15%; mean MKSS, 15.61) enrolled for rehabilitation 0.05). Conclusions Early patient counseling in the acute care unit helps in the early enrolment of patients with poor socioeconomic demographic profile to a rehabilitation program
A web-based library consult service for evidence-based medicine: Technical development
BACKGROUND: Incorporating evidence based medicine (EBM) into clinical practice requires clinicians to learn to efficiently gain access to clinical evidence and effectively appraise its validity. Even using current electronic systems, selecting literature-based data to solve a single patient-related problem can require more time than practicing physicians or residents can spare. Clinical librarians, as informationists, are uniquely suited to assist physicians in this endeavor. RESULTS: To improve support for evidence-based practice, we have developed a web-based EBM library consult service application (LCS). Librarians use the LCS system to provide full text evidence-based literature with critical appraisal in response to a clinical question asked by a remote physician. LCS uses an entirely Free/Open Source Software platform and will be released under a Free Software license. In the first year of the LCS project, the software was successfully developed and a reference implementation put into active use. Two years of evaluation of the clinical, educational, and attitudinal impact on physician-users and librarian staff are underway, and expected to lead to refinement and wide dissemination of the system. CONCLUSION: A web-based EBM library consult model may provide a useful way for informationists to assist clinicians, and is feasible to implement
