Spin-Wave Spectrum in `Single-Domain' Magnetic Ground State of Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet CuFeO2
By means of neutron scattering measurements, we have investigated spin-wave
excitation in a collinear four-sublattice (4SL) magnetic ground state of a
triangular lattice antiferromagnet CuFeO2, which has been of recent interest as
a strongly frustrated magnet, a spin-lattice coupled system and a multiferroic.
To avoid mixing of spin-wave spectrum from magnetic domains having three
different orientations reflecting trigonal symmetry of the crystal structure,
we have applied uniaxial pressure on [1-10] direction of a single crystal
CuFeO2. By elastic neutron scattering measurements, we have found that only 10
MPa of the uniaxial pressure results in almost 'single domain' state in the 4SL
phase. We have thus performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements using
the single domain sample, and have identified two distinct spin- wave branches.
The dispersion relation of the upper spin-wave branch cannot be explained by
the previous theoretical model [R. S. Fishman: J. Appl. Phys. 103 (2008)
07B109]. This implies the importance of the lattice degree of freedom in the
spin-wave excitation in this system, because the previous calculation neglected
the effect of the spin-driven lattice distortion in the 4SL phase. We have also
discussed relationship between the present results and the recently discovered
"electromagnon" excitation.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in J. Phys. Soc. Jp
Generalized Density Matrix Revisited: Microscopic Approach to Collective Dynamics in Soft Spherical Nuclei
The generalized density matrix (GDM) method is used to calculate
microscopically the parameters of the collective Hamiltonian. Higher order
anharmonicities are obtained consistently with the lowest order results, the
mean field [Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equation] and the harmonic potential
[quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA)]. The method is applied to
soft spherical nuclei, where the anharmonicities are essential for restoring
the stability of the system, as the harmonic potential becomes small or
negative. The approach is tested in three models of increasing complexity: the
Lipkin model, model with factorizable forces, and the quadrupole plus pairing
model.Comment: submitted to Physical Review C on 08 May, 201
The Energy of Scattering Solitons in the Ward Model
The energy density of a scattering soliton solution in Ward's integrable
chiral model is shown to be instantaneously the same as the energy density of a
static multi-lump solution of the \CP^3 sigma model. This explains the
quantization of the total energy in the Ward model.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Collective motion occurs inevitably in a class of populations of globally coupled chaotic elements
We discovered numerically a scaling law obeyed by the amplitude of collective
mo tion in large populations of chaotic elements. Our analysis strongly
suggests that such populations generically exhibit collective motion in the
presence of interaction, however weak it may be. A phase diagram for the
collective motion, which is characterized by peculiar structures similar to
Arnold tongues, is obtained.Comment: 6 pages, 9 Postscript figures, uses revtex.st
