Genotypic characterization and safety assessment of lactic acid bacteria from indigenous African fermented food products
BACKGROUND: Indigenous fermented food products play an essential role in the diet of millions of Africans. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are among the predominant microbial species in African indigenous fermented food products and are used for different applications in the food and biotechnology industries. Numerous studies have described antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of LAB from different parts of the world. However, there is limited information on antimicrobial resistance profiles of LAB from Africa. The aim of this study was to characterize 33 LAB previously isolated from three different African indigenous fermented food products using (GTG)(5)-based rep-PCR, sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and species-specific PCR techniques for differentiation of closely related species and further evaluate their antibiotic resistance profiles by the broth microdilution method and their haemolytic activity on sheep blood agar plates as indicators of safety traits among these bacteria. RESULTS: Using molecular biology based methods and selected phenotypic tests such as catalase reaction, CO(2) production from glucose, colonies and cells morphology, the isolates were identified as Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus ghanensis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus salivarius, Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides, Pediococcus acidilactici, Pediococcus pentosaceus and Weissella confusa. The bacteria were susceptible to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin and erythromycin but resistant to vancomycin, kanamycin and streptomycin. Variable sensitivity profiles to tetracycline and gentamicin was observed among the isolates with Lb. plantarum, Lb. salivarius, W. confusa (except strain SK9-5) and Lb. fermentum strains being susceptible to tetracycline whereas Pediococcus strains and Lb. ghanensis strains were resistant. For gentamicin, Leuc. pseudomesenteroides, Lb. ghanensis and Ped. acidilactici strains were resistant to 64 mg/L whereas some W. confusa and Lb. plantarum strains had a MIC value of 16 mg/L and 32 mg/L respectively. No β-haemolytic activity was observed, however, α-haemolytic activity was observed in 27% (9) of the strains comprising Lb. salivarius (6), W. confusa (2) and Lb. delbrueckii (1) isolates. CONCLUSIONS: The resistance to kanamycin and vancomycin is probably an intrinsic feature since similar observations were reported in the literature for LAB. Low prevalence of pathogenicity indicator traits were observed among the isolates especially with the presence of poor haemolytic activities and they could therefore be considered as interesting candidates for selection of starter cultures or probiotics for different applications
Changes in Waist Circumference and the Incidence of Diabetes in Middle-Aged Men and Women
Waist circumference (WC) is positively associated with diabetes, but the association with changes in WC (DWC) is less clear. We investigated the association between DWC and the subsequent risk of diabetes in middle-aged men and women, and evaluated the influence from concurrent changes in body mass index (DBMI).Data on 15,577 men and 20,066 women from the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health study were analyzed. Anthropometry was assessed in 1993–97 and 1999–02. Information on diabetes was obtained from The Danish National Diabetes Register. Hazard ratios (HR) were calculated from Cox' proportional hazard models with individuals considered at risk from 1999–02 until December 31 2006. During 5.4 years of follow-up, 1,027 and 876 new cases of diabetes occurred among men and women, respectively. WC was positively associated with diabetes in both sexes also with adjustment for covariates and BMI. DWC was positively associated with diabetes in women, but not in men (HR per 5 cm change = 1.09 (1.04∶1.15) in women, and 1.00 (0.94, 1.07) in men with adjustment for covariates, baseline WC, BMI and DBMI). Associations with DWC were not notably different in sub-groups stratified according to baseline WC or DBMI, or when individuals with diseases or diabetes occurring within the first years of follow-up were excluded.While this study confirmed that WC is positively associated with the risk of diabetes in middle-aged men and women, it surprisingly showed that changes in WC were not associated with the subsequent risk of diabetes in men, and only weakly positively associated with the risk of diabetes in women. Accordingly, these findings suggest that a reduction in WC may be a weak or insufficient or target for prevention of diabetes in middle-aged men and women
Draft whole-genome sequence of <em>Bacillus sonorensis </em>strain L12, a source of nonribosomal lipopeptides
The Bacillus sonorensis L12 draft genome sequence is approximately 4,647,754Â bp in size with a G+C content of 45.2%. Over 86% of the genome contains protein-encoding genes, including several gene clusters for de novo biosynthesis of the nonribosomal lipopeptides iturin, bacitracin, and fengycin, which could mean that the strain exhibits antifungal effects
Waist Circumference and Body Mass Index as Predictors of Health Care Costs
BACKGROUND: In the present study we analyze the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) and future health care costs. On the basis of the relation between these anthropometric measures and mortality, we hypothesized that for all levels of BMI increased WC implies added future health care costs (Hypothesis 1) and for given levels of WC increased BMI entails reduced future health care costs (Hypothesis 2). We furthermore assessed whether a combination of the two measures predicts health care costs better than either individual measure. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Data were obtained from the Danish prospective cohort study Diet, Cancer and Health. The population includes 15,334 men and 16,506 women 50 to 64 years old recruited in 1996 to 1997. The relationship between future health care costs and BMI and WC in combination was analyzed by use of categorized and continuous analyses. The analysis confirms Hypothesis 1, reflecting that an increased level of abdominal fat for a given BMI gives higher health care costs. Hypothesis 2, that BMI had a protective effect for a given WC, was only confirmed in the continuous analysis and for a subgroup of women (BMI<30 kg/m(2) and WC <88 cm). The relative magnitude of the estimates supports that the regressions including WC as an explanatory factor provide the best fit to the data. CONCLUSION: The study showed that WC for given levels of BMI predicts increased health costs, whereas BMI for given WC did not predict health costs except for a lower cost in non-obese women with normal WC. Combining WC and BMI does not give a better prediction of costs than WC alone
Changes in Waist Circumference and Mortality in Middle-Aged Men and Women
BACKGROUND: Waist circumference (WC) adjusted for body mass index (BMI) is positively associated with mortality, but the association with changes in WC is less clear. We investigated the association between changes in WC and mortality in middle-aged men and women, and evaluated the influence from concurrent changes in BMI. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Data on 26,625 healthy men and women from the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health study was analyzed. WC and BMI were assessed in 1993-97 and in 1999-02. Information on mortality was obtained by linkage to the Danish central Person Register. Hazard ratios (HR) were estimated with Cox regression models. During 6.7 years of follow-up, 568 and 361 deaths occurred among men and women, respectively. Changes in WC were positively associated with mortality (HR per 5 cm for the sexes combined  = 1.09 (1.02 : 1.16) with adjustment for covariates, baseline WC, BMI and changes in BMI), whereas changes in BMI were inversely associated with mortality (HR per kg/m2 for the sexes combined  = 0.91 (0.86, 0.97) with adjustment for covariates, baseline WC, BMI and changes in WC). Associations between changes in WC and mortality were not notably different in sub-groups stratified according to changes in BMI, baseline WC or when smokers or deaths occurring within the first years of follow-up were excluded. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Changes in WC were positively associated with mortality in healthy middle-aged men and women throughout the range of concurrent changes in BMI. These findings suggest a need for development of prevention and treatment strategies targeted against redistribution of fat mass towards the abdominal region
Experimentally obtaining the Likeness of Two Unknown Quantum States on an NMR Quantum Information Processor
Recently quantum states discrimination has been frequently studied. In this
paper we study them from the other way round, the likeness of two quantum
states. The fidelity is used to describe the likeness of two quantum states.
Then we presented a scheme to obtain the fidelity of two unknown qubits
directly from the integral area of the spectra of the assistant qubit(spin) on
an NMR Quantum Information Processor. Finally we demonstrated the scheme on a
three-qubit quantum information processor. The experimental data are consistent
with the theoretical expectation with an average error of 0.05, which confirms

Comparison of S=0 and S=1/2 Impurities in Haldane Chain Compound,
We present the effect of Zn (S=0) and Cu (S=1/2) substitution at the Ni site
of S=1 Haldane chain compound . Y NMR allows us to
measure the local magnetic susceptibility at different distances from the
defects. The Y NMR spectrum consists of one central peak and several
less intense satellite peaks. The shift of the central peak measures the
uniform susceptibility, which displays a Haldane gap 100 K and it
corresponds to an AF coupling J260 K between the near-neighbor Ni spins.
Zn or Cu substitution does not affect the Haldane gap. The satellites, which
are evenly distributed on the two sides of the central peak, probe the
antiferromagnetic staggered magnetization near the substituted site, which
decays exponentially. Its extension is found identical for both impurities and
corresponds accurately to the correlation length (T) determined by Monte
Carlo (QMC) simulations for the pure compound. In the case of non-magnetic Zn,
the temperature dependence of the induced magnetization is consistent with a
Curie law with an "effective" spin S=0.4 on each side of Zn, which is well
accounted by Quantum Monte Carlo computations of the spinless-defect-induced
magnetism. In the case of magnetic Cu, the similarity of the induced magnetism
to the Zn case implies a weak coupling of the Cu spin to the nearest- neighbor
Ni spins. The slight reductionin the induced polarization with respect to Zn is
reproduced by QMC computations by considering an antiferromagnetic coupling of
strength J'=0.1-0.2 J between the S=1/2 Cu-spin and nearest-neighbor Ni-spin.Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Physical Review
Magnetization profiles and NMR spectra of doped Haldane chains at finite temperatures
Open segments of S=1 antiferromagnetic spin chains are studied at finite
temperatures and fields using continuous time Quantum Monte Carlo techniques.
By calculating the resulting magnetization profiles for a large range of chain
lengths with fixed field and temperature we reconstruct the experimentally
measured NMR spectrum of impurity doped YBaNiMgO. For
temperatures above the gap the calculated NMR spectra are in excellent
agreement with the experimental results, confirming the existence of
excitations at the end of open S=1 chain segments. At temperatures below the
gap, neglecting inter chain couplings, we still find well defined peaks in the
calculated NMR spectra corresponding to the chain end excitations. At
low temperatures, inter chain couplings could be important, resulting in a more

Quantum Gates and Memory using Microwave Dressed States
Trapped atomic ions have been successfully used for demonstrating basic
elements of universal quantum information processing (QIP). Nevertheless,
scaling up of these methods and techniques to achieve large scale universal
QIP, or more specialized quantum simulations remains challenging. The use of
easily controllable and stable microwave sources instead of complex laser
systems on the other hand promises to remove obstacles to scalability.
Important remaining drawbacks in this approach are the use of magnetic field
sensitive states, which shorten coherence times considerably, and the
requirement to create large stable magnetic field gradients. Here, we present
theoretically a novel approach based on dressing magnetic field sensitive
states with microwave fields which addresses both issues and permits fast
quantum logic. We experimentally demonstrate basic building blocks of this
scheme to show that these dressed states are long-lived and coherence times are
increased by more than two orders of magnitude compared to bare magnetic field
sensitive states. This changes decisively the prospect of microwave-driven ion
trap QIP and offers a new route to extend coherence times for all systems that
suffer from magnetic noise such as neutral atoms, NV-centres, quantum dots, or
