    Unchanged thermopower enhancement at the semiconductor-metal transition in correlated FeSb2−x_{2-x}Tex_x

    Substitution of Sb in FeSb2_2 by less than 0.5% of Te induces a transition from a correlated semiconductor to an unconventional metal with large effective charge carrier mass m∗m^*. Spanning the entire range of the semiconductor-metal crossover, we observed an almost constant enhancement of the measured thermopower compared to that estimated by the classical theory of electron diffusion. Using the latter for a quantitative description one has to employ an enhancement factor of 10-30. Our observations point to the importance of electron-electron correlations in the thermal transport of FeSb2_2, and suggest a route to design thermoelectric materials for cryogenic applications.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Appl.     Strongly aligned molecules inside helium droplets in the near-adiabatic regime

    Iodine (I2_2) molecules embedded in He nanodroplets are aligned by a 160 ps long laser pulse. The highest degree of alignment, occurring at the peak of the pulse and quantified by ⟨cos⁡2θ2D⟩\langle \cos^2 \theta_{2D} \rangle, is measured as a function of the laser intensity. The results are well described by ⟨cos⁡2θ2D⟩\langle \cos^2 \theta_{2D} \rangle calculated for a gas of isolated molecules each with an effective rotational constant of 0.6 times the gas-phase value, and at a temperature of 0.4 K. Theoretical analysis using the angulon quasiparticle to describe rotating molecules in superfluid helium rationalizes why the alignment mechanism is similar to that of isolated molecules with an effective rotational constant. A major advantage of molecules in He droplets is that their 0.4 K temperature leads to stronger alignment than what can generally be achieved for gas phase molecules -- here demonstrated by a direct comparison of the droplet results to measurements on a ∼\sim 1 K supersonic beam of isolated molecules. This point is further illustrated for more complex system by measurements on 1,4-diiodobenzene and 1,4-dibromobenzene. For all three molecular species studied the highest values of ⟨cos⁡2θ2D⟩\langle \cos^2 \theta_{2D} \rangle achieved in He droplets exceed 0.96.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Extension of internationalisation models: drivers and processes for the globalisation of product development – a comparison of Danish and Chinese engineering firms

    This paper develops an extension to established production- and supply chain management focused internationalisation models. It applies explorative case studies in Danish and Chinese engineering firms to discover how the globalisation process of product development differs from Danish and Chinese perspectives. The paper uses internationalisation and global product development theory to explain similarities and differences in the approaches. Grounded in case study results, a new model for internationalisation is proposed. The new model expands the internationalisation process model to include steps of product development and collaborative distributed development beyond sourcing, sales and production elements. The paper then provides propositions for how to further develop the suggested model, and how western companies can learn from the Chinese approaches, and globalise their product development activities from the front end of the value chain rather than from the back-end

    Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation of Strong-Field Ionization:A Perfectly Matched Layer Approach

    A Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) scheme with Perfectly Matched Layers (PMLs) is considered for solving the time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger equation, and simulate the ionization of an electron initially bound to a one-dimensional δ\delta-potential, when applying a strong time-oscillating electric field. The performance of PMLs based on different absorption functions are compared, where we find slowly growing functions to be preferable. PMLs are shown to be able to reduce the computational domain, and thus the required numerical resources, by several orders of magnitude. This is demonstrated by testing the proposed method against an FDTD approach without PMLs and a very large computational domain. We further show that PMLs outperform the well known Exterior Complex Scaling (ECS) technique for short-range potentials when implemented in FDTD, though ECS remains superior for long-range potentials. The accuracy of the method is furthermore demonstrated by comparing with known numerical and analytical results for the δ\delta-potential

    The association of selected multiple sclerosis symptoms with disability and quality of life:a large Danish self-report survey

    Abstract Background People with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience a wide range of unpredictable and variable symptoms. The symptomatology of MS has previously been reported in large sample registry studies; however, some symptoms may be underreported in registries based on clinician-reported outcomes and how the symptoms are associated with quality of life (QoL) are often not addressed. The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the frequency of selected MS related symptoms and their associations with disability and QoL in a large self-report study. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey among all patients at the Danish Multiple Sclerosis Center, Copenhagen University Hospital, Denmark. The questionnaire included information on clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, descriptors of QoL and disability, as well as prevalence and severity of the following MS symptoms: impaired ambulation, spasticity, chronic pain, fatigue, bowel and bladder dysfunction, and sleep disturbances. Results Questionnaires were returned by 2244/3606 (62%). Participants without MS diagnosis or incomplete questionnaires were excluded, n = 235. A total of 2009 questionnaires were included for analysis (mean age 49.4 years; mean disease duration 11.7 years; and 69% were women). The most frequently reported symptoms were bowel and bladder dysfunction (74%), fatigue (66%), sleep disturbances (59%), spasticity (51%) and impaired ambulation (38%). With exception of fatigue and sleep disturbances, all other symptoms increased in severity with higher disability level. Invisible symptoms (also referred to as hidden symptoms) such as fatigue, pain and sleep disturbances had the strongest associations with the overall QoL. Conclusion We found invisible symptoms highly prevalent, even at mild disability levels. Fatigue, pain and sleep disturbances had the strongest associations with the overall QoL and were more frequently reported in our study compared with previous registry-based studies. These symptoms may be underreported in registries based on clinician reported outcomes, which emphasizes the importance of including standardized patient reported outcomes in nationwide registries to better understand the impact of the symptom burden in MS

    IL-6, IL-12, and IL-23 STAT-Pathway Genetic Risk and Responsiveness of Lymphocytes in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

    Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated demyelinating disease characterized by central nervous system (CNS) lymphocyte infiltration, abundant production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and inappropriate activation of Th1 and Th17 cells, B cells, and innate immune cells. The etiology of MS is complex, and genetic factors contribute to disease susceptibility. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have revealed numerous MS-risk alleles in the IL-6/STAT3, IL-12/STAT4, and IL-23/STAT3-pathways implicated in the differentiation of Th1 and Th17 cells. In this study, we investigated the signaling properties of these pathways in T, B, and NK cells from patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and healthy controls, and assessed the genetic contribution to the activity of the pathways. This revealed a great variability in the level of STAT-pathway molecules and STAT activation between the cell types investigated. We also found a strong donor variation in IL-6, IL-12, and IL-23 responsiveness of primed CD4+ T cells. This variation could not be explained by a single MS-risk variant in a pathway component, or by an accumulation of multiple STAT-pathway MS-risk SNPs. The data of this study suggests that other factors in cohesion with the genetic background contribute to the responsiveness of the IL-6/STAT3, IL-12/STAT4, and IL-23/STAT3-pathways

    Long-Term Cardiovascular Health After Pregnancy in Danish Women With Congenital Heart Disease. A Register-Based Cohort Study Between 1993 and 2016

    Background Little is known about the impact of pregnancy on long‐term cardiovascular health in individuals with congenital heart disease (CHD). We aimed to determine if giving birth in patients with CHD is associated with higher risk of long‐term cardiovascular morbidity. Methods and Results We studied a cohort of 1262 individuals with CHD giving birth (live or still) from 1993 to 2015 using Danish nationwide registers. We randomly sampled a comparison cohort matched on age of women with CHD who had not given birth at the time. We balanced the 2 cohorts on baseline demographic (eg, education) and clinical variables (eg, CHD severity) using inverse probability of treatment weighting. Individuals were followed for critical (eg, heart failure), other cardiovascular morbidity (eg, arrhythmia), and cardiac surgery/interventions after pregnancy. Individuals were followed for median 6.0 years (interquartile range 3.2–9.2). Among individuals giving birth the incidence rate per 1000 person‐years was 1.6, 10.0, and 6.0 for critical and other cardiovascular morbidity and cardiac surgery, respectively. There was no overall difference in risk of neither critical and other cardiovascular morbidity nor cardiac surgery among individuals who gave birth and individuals who did not; adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) were 0.74 (95% CI, 0.37–1.48), 0.88 (95% CI, 0.65–1.19), and 0.78 (95% C,I 0.54–1.12), respectively. However, individuals with obstetric complications had a higher long‐term risk of other cardiovascular morbidity (aHR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.07–3.20). Conclusions Giving birth seemed not to be associated with a higher risk of long‐term cardiovascular morbidity among women with CHD. However, individuals having obstetric complications had a higher risk of other cardiovascular morbidity in the long term
