Toyo Eiwa University has newly launched its teacher training curriculum that enables students to obtain a teacher certificate in high school civics education. This thesis studies how the Toyo Eiwa University school motto can be reflected in the curriculum with civics education being the only subject in Japan\u27s public education that deals with religion. Discussions on religion in public education based on S.Macedo\u27s thesis that reevaluates the significance of the US Supreme Court decision in the case of Wisconsin vs. Yoder in 1976 will be studied to argue that education about religious denominations should be included in religion education to protect the freedom of religion and to develop high school students\u27 tolerance towards religion in the multicultural school environment of Japan. This thesis emphasizes that Toyo Eiwa University students\u27 learning of Christian doctrine, which is closely related to the university\u27s school motto, is essential in the teacher training curriculum of Toyo Eiwa University

The Supreme Court Grand Bench under the current Constitution for the8th time ruled the unconstitutionality of the Japanese Citizenship Law on June 4,2008. The significance of the case is that it secured equal rights as Japanese citizensfor children born out of wedlock to a Japanese father and a mother of a differentnationality. This particular case was chosen in order to explore the possibilities ofusing it to help students better understand the need for equality and security in regardto all minors\u27 rights in a just society

In 2007, the National School Education Law was revised in Japan. The revisions put priority on developing students’ academic skills from elementary school to high school. In particular, improving students’ thinking power, judgment, and power of expression was insisted upon clearly. Now in 2012 in junior high schools, the new course of study has been fully carried out in all levels. When the new junior high school social studies curriculum is examined, it can be seen that substantial language development activities have been carried out. Furthermore, for junior high school students over the three years, the number of classroom hours increased from 315 hours to 350 hours for social studies. Modern history isbeing studied still more deeply by being presented within historical contexts. For students in their 3rd year, the government guidelines for teaching require that history should be taught first for 40 hours, and civics should be taught for 100 hours after that. This means that in junior high school, social studies education there is a new subject that includes both the study of modern history and how it is connected to topics in civics. In this subject, students should be able to practice connecting ideas from different historical fields, and improve their thinkingpower, judgment, and power of expression. In this paper the implementation of the social studies curriculum in 2011 in Toyo Eiwa Junior High School is evaluated. In particular, the topic of the establishment of the Universal Male Suffrage Act of the Taisho democracy, and whether students’ understanding of it has been deepened by their integrated study of the election system in civics will be examined. Data include students’ lesson notes, their answers to essay test questions, and their performance on the final examination

Holmes tremor is a symptomatic tremor that develops secondary to central nervous system disorders. Stereotactic neuromodulation is considered when the tremors are intractable. Targeting the ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) is common; however, the outcome is often unsatisfactory, and the posterior subthalamic area (PSA) is expected as alternative target. In this study, we report the case of a patient with intractable Holmes tremor who underwent dual-lead deep brain stimulation (DBS) to stimulate multiple locations in the PSA and thalamus. The patient was a 77-year-old female who complained of severe tremor in her left upper extremity that developed one year after her right thalamic infarction. Vim-thalamotomy using focused ultrasound therapy (FUS) was initially performed but failed to control tremor. Subsequently, we performed DBS using two leads to stimulate four different structures. Accordingly, one lead was implanted with the aim of targeting the ventral oralis nucleus (Vo)/zona incerta (Zi), and the other with the aim of targeting the Vim/prelemniscal radiation (Raprl). Electrode stimulation revealed that Raprl and Zi had obvious effects. Postoperatively, the patient achieved good tremor control without any side effects, which was maintained for two years. Considering that she demonstrated resting, postural, and intention/action tremor, and Vim-thalamotomy by FUS was insufficient for tremor control, complicated pathogenesis was presumed in her symptoms including both the cerebellothalamic and the pallidothalamic pathways. Using the dual-lead DBS technique, we have more choices to adjust the stimulation at multiple sites, where different functional networks are connected. Intractable tremors, such as Holmes tremor, may have complicated pathology, therefore, modulating multiple pathological networks is necessary. We suggest that the dual-lead DBS (Vo/Raprl and Vim/Zi) presented here is safe, technically feasible, and possibly effective for the control of Holmes tremor.</p
