    Psychometric Properties of the Drive for Muscularity Attitudes Questionnaire Among Irish Men

    The Drive for Muscularity Attitudes Questionnaire (DMAQ) was developed to measure men’s desire to attain an idealized muscular body. To date, the cross-cultural suitability of this measure has received limited attention. The current study addressed this omission by testing the psychometric properties of the DMAQ using an online sample of Irish men ( N = 327). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that a unidimensional model adequately matched observed data (i.e., fit indices suggested acceptable model fit). Analyses also showed that the DMAQ yielded reliable and construct valid scores, suggesting that the scale holds promise as an indicant of the drive for muscularity among Irish men.     Medical students’ attitudes towards healthcare for people with learning disabilities

    This thesis is presented in three parts. The overall focus of the thesis is medical students’ attitudes towards healthcare for people with learning disabilities. Medical students’ attitudes are important because, as tomorrow’s doctors, they will have opportunities to reduce the health inequalities experienced by people with learning disabilities. The first part presents a review of literature on medical students’ attitudes towards people with learning disabilities and their healthcare. Despite being limited by methodological weaknesses, reviewed studies suggested that pedagogical interventions could enhance medical students’ attitudes. It was concluded that further investigation of medical students’ attitudes towards healthcare for this population was warranted. Part two is an empirical paper that documents qualitative and quantitative studies of medical students’ attitudes towards healthcare for people with learning disabilities. In the first study, a thematic analysis of data from individual interviews with medical students was described. A measure of medical students’ beliefs about healthcare for people with learning disabilities was developed and psychometrically evaluated in the second study. Together, these studies indicated that medical students’ attitudes might benefit from more learning disabilities teaching and direct experiences with people with learning disabilities. Part three is a critical appraisal of the literature and the two studies. The research rationale and strengths and weaknesses of the research were explored. Then, practical implications and future research directions were discussed. Finally, a conclusion and personal reflections were provided

    Multiple Group Membership and Well-Being: Is There Always Strength in Numbers?

However, much of this work considers group memberships very broadly and in terms of number alone. We conducted two correlational studies exploring how the relationship between multiple group membership and well-being is shaped by (a) the complexity of those groups within the overall self-concept (i.e., social identity complexity: SIC), and (b) the perceived value and visibility of individual group memberships to others (i.e., stigma). Study 1 (N = 112) found a positive relationship between multiple group membership and well-being, but only for individuals high in SIC. This effect was mediated by perceived identity expression and access to social support. Study 2 (N = 104) also found that multiple group memberships indirectly contributed to well-being via perceived identity expression and social support, as well as identity compatibility and perceived social inclusion. But, in this study the relationship between multiple group memberships and well-being outcomes was moderated by the perceived value and visibility of group memberships to others. Specifically, possessing multiple, devalued and visible group memberships compromised well-being relative to multiple valued group memberships, or devalued group memberships that were invisible. Together, these studies suggest that the benefits of multiple group membership depend on factors beyond their number. Specifically, the features of group memberships, individually and in combination, and the way in which these guide self-expression and social action, determine whether these are a benefit or burden for individual well-being

    Description To research the quantification of vibration from a micro turbine, and to develop a method of prediction of vibration and structure borne noise in a wide variety of installations in the UK. Objective The objectives of the study are as follows: 1) Develop a methodology to quantify the amount of source vibration from a building mounted micro wind turbine installation, and to predict the level of vibration and structure-borne noise impact within such buildings in the UK. 2) Test and validate the hypothesis on a statically robust sample size 3) Report the developed methodology in a form suitable for widespread adoption by industry and regulators, and report back on the suitability of the method on which to base policy decisions for a future inclusion for building mounted turbines in the GPDO

    Social and relational identification as determinants of care workers’ motivation and wellbeing

    AcceptedArticleA growing body of research in the field of health and social care indicates that the quality of the relationship between the person giving care and the person receiving it contributes significantly to the motivation and wellbeing of both. This paper examines how care workers’ motivation is shaped by their social and relational identification at work. Survey findings at two time points (T1, N = 643; T2, N = 1274) show that care workers’ motivation increases to the extent that incentives, the working context (of residential vs. domiciliary care), and the professionalization process (of acquiring vs. not acquiring a qualification) serve to build and maintain meaningful identities within the organization. In this context care workers attach greatest importance to their relational identity with clients and the more they perceive this as congruent with their organizational identity the more motivated they are.     Medical students' attitudes towards people with intellectual disabilities: a literature review

    The present paper provides a review of research on medical students' attitudes to people with intellectual disabilities. The attitudes of medical students warrant empirical attention because their future work may determine people with intellectual disabilities' access to healthcare and exposure to health inequalities. An electronic search of Embase, Ovid MEDLINE(R), PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science was completed to identify papers published up to August 2013. Twenty-four studies were identified, most of which evaluated the effects of pedagogical interventions on students' attitudes. Results suggested that medical students' attitudes to people with intellectual disabilities were responsive to interventions. However, the evidence is restricted due to research limitations, including poor measurement, self-selection bias, and the absence of control groups when evaluating interventions. Thus, there is a dearth of high-quality research on this topic, and past findings should be interpreted with caution. Future research directions are provided

    Intersectional Invisibility in Women's Diversity Interventions

One reason for this may be that the field that diversity interventions are usually based on, the social sciences, often do not consider intra-group differences among women. Specifically, differences by racialization may be excluded from such diversity interventions. The present research examines whether racially marginalized women have different diversity interventions needs than White women, and whether organizations are less likely to represent those needs (i.e., intersectional invisibility). Across an open-ended coding (n = 293) and a ranking study (n = 489), Black women noted a need to incorporate intersectional differences, Asian women prioritized methods to address challenges to their authority, and White women indicated a need to address agency perceptions. Improving work-life balance and networks was a shared concern among participants, though we theorized different racially gendered reasons for why these intervention needs are relevant to each group. In Study 3 (n = 92 organizations), we analyzed organizations' websites using word count and textual analysis. Organizations- including the Education, Science, and Research sector- most readily advocated for women through enhancing agency. They were also less likely to mention dealing with perceptions of excessive agency or addressing intersectional considerations. The organizations broadly mentioned other marginalized groups besides women, but rarely did they do so intersectionality. Taken together, our findings demonstrate different intervention priorities across differently racialized groups. We found evidence of intersectional invisibility where organizations were more likely to address agency-enhancing intervention needs while failing to include other intervention needs relevant for Black women and Asian women.     The who, when, and why of the glass cliff phenomenon: A meta-analysis of appointments to precarious leadership positions

The glass cliff has been investigated in a range of domains using various methodologies, but evidence is mixed. In three meta analyses, we examined (a) archival field studies testing whether members of underrepresented groups, compared to members of majority groups, are more likely to be appointed to leadership positions in times of crisis; (b) experimental studies testing whether members of underrepresented groups, compared to members of majority groups, are evaluated as more suitable for, as well as (c) more likely to be selected for, leadership positions in times of crisis. All three analyses provided some evidence in line with the glass cliff for women. Specifically, the meta-analysis of archival studies revealed a small glass cliff effect that was dependent on organizational domain. The leadership suitability meta-analysis also showed a small glass cliff effect in between-participants studies, but not in within-participants studies. The analysis of leadership selection revealed that women are more likely to be selected over men in times of crisis, and that this effect is larger in countries with higher gender inequality. The glass cliff also extended to members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. We explore several moderating factors and report analyses shedding light on the underlying causes of the glass cliff.     Noise and vibration from building-mounted micro wind turbines part 3 : prediction methodology

    This brief report describes a simplified method for estimation of levels of structure-borne sound in buildings to which a micro-wind turbine (MWT) is attached. The method is applicable to two specific designs of MWT, each for three lengths of mounting pole and for masonry buildings. The output gives expected noise level for given rotational speed of the MWT. Applicability and limitations of the method are described. A more general methodology is provided in companion reports but requires specialist knowledge to implement. Structure-borne sound is notoriously difficult to predict and several assumptions have been necessary in order to produce a sufficiently simple estimation method. Therefore, caution is required in relying on the predictions until sufficient confidence has been built up through experience of real installations
