Galaxy pairs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey - XII: The fuelling mechanism of low excitation radio-loud AGN
We investigate whether the fuelling of low excitation radio galaxies (LERGs)
is linked to major galaxy interactions. Our study utilizes a sample of 10,800
spectroscopic galaxy pairs and 97 post-mergers selected from the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey with matches to multi-wavelength datasets. The LERG fraction amongst
interacting galaxies is a factor of 3.5 higher than that of a control sample
matched in local galaxy density, redshift and stellar mass. However, the LERG
excess in pairs does not depend on projected separation and remains elevated
out to at least 500 kpc, suggesting that major mergers are not their main
fuelling channel. In order to identify the primary fuelling mechanism of LERGs,
we compile samples of control galaxies that are matched in various host galaxy
and environmental properties. The LERG excess is reduced, but not completely
removed, when halo mass or D4000 are included in the matching parameters.
However, when BOTH M_halo and D4000 are matched, there is no LERG excess and
the 1.4 GHz luminosities (which trace jet mechanical power) are consistent
between the pairs and control. In contrast, the excess of optical and mid-IR
selected AGN in galaxy pairs is unchanged when the additional matching
parameters are implemented. Our results suggest that whilst major interactions
may trigger optically and mid-IR selected AGN, the gas which fuels the LERGs
has two secular origins: one associated with the large scale environment, such
as accretion from the surrounding medium or minor mergers, plus an internal

Signal Characteristics of Civil GPS Jammers
This paper surveys the signal properties of 18 commercially
available GPS jammers based on experimental
data. The paper is divided into two distinct tests.
The first characterizes the jamming signals, and the
second test determines the effective range of 4 of the
jammers. The first test uses power spectra from discrete
Fourier transforms (DFTs) of the time series data
to show that all the jammers employ approximately the same jamming method, i.e. linear frequency modulation
of a single tone. The spectra also show that
there are significant jammer-to-jammer variations, including
between jammers of the same model, and that
a given jammer’s signal may vary over time. The first
test also includes measurements of signal power within
frequency bands centered at the L1 and L2 frequencies,
along with the sweep periods and the sweep range at
both frequencies. The second test presents measurements
of the attenuation of the jamming signal necessary
to allow a commercially available GPS receiver to
acquire and track signals from a GPS simulator. From
the attenuation levels and some assumptions about the
antennas used, upper limits on the effective jamming
ranges are calculated for 4 of the jammers, with a resulting

The Spectroscopic Properties of Ly{\alpha}-Emitters at z 2.7: Escaping Gas and Photons from Faint Galaxies
We present a spectroscopic survey of 318 faint , ,
Ly{\alpha}-emission-selected galaxies (LAEs) at 2.5<z<3. A sample of 32 LAEs
with rest-frame optical spectra from Keck/MOSFIRE are used to interpret the LAE
spectra in the context of their systemic redshifts. We find that the Ly{\alpha}
emission of LAEs is typically less spectrally extended than among samples of
more luminous continuum-selected galaxies (LBGs) at similar redshifts. Using
the MOSFIRE subsample, we find that the peak of the Ly{\alpha} line is shifted
by +200 km/s with respect to systemic across a diverse set of galaxies
including both LAEs and LBGs. We also find a small number of objects with
significantly blueshifted Ly{\alpha} emission, a potential indicator of
accreting gas. The Ly{\alpha}-to-H{\alpha} line ratios suggest that the LAEs
have Ly{\alpha} escape fractions %,
significantly higher than typical LBG samples. Using redshifts calibrated by
our MOSFIRE sample, we construct composite LAE spectra, finding the first
evidence for metal-enriched outflows in such intrinsically-faint high-redshift
galaxies. These outflows have smaller continuum covering fractions and velocities km/s, km/s than those associated with typical LBGs, suggesting that
gas covering fraction is a likely driver of the high Ly{\alpha} and
Ly-continuum escape fractions of LAEs. Our results suggest a similar scaling of
outflow velocity with star formation rate as is observed at lower redshifts
and indicate that a substantial

The primary focus of animal identification programs, which are rapidly developing throughout the world, is to effectively respond to animal health emergencies that have the potential to cause devastating consequences to animal and public health. Additional benefits of an animal identification program include maintaining or expanding international trade, increased consumer confidence, and improved supply chain management. The primary objective of this paper is to provide a series of recommendations for the U.S. to consider as it continues to develop the National Animal Identification System. Networks as ‘laboratories of experience’: exploring the life cycle of the suffrage movement and its aftermath in Ireland 1870–1937
Applying an innovative conceptual framework this article presents an interdisciplinary re-appraisal of the suffrage movement and its aftermath in Ireland throughout the years 1870–1937. New social movement theory is utilised to consider how, in the words of the Italian sociologist Alberto Melucci ‘the submerged networks of social movements are laboratories of experience’. Going beyond the previously published work of each author, this article uses the sociological lens of ‘laboratories of experience’ to re-analyse aspects of the suffrage movement, female activism and the wider women's movement in Ireland. This application of social movement theory to female networks, their origins, aims and strategies, along with their interconnectedness, provides a more nuanced and detailed understanding of the ‘life-cycle’ of this movement. The article aims to demonstrate how an analysis of network dynamics and application of the concept of ‘latency’ is useful in further understanding the significance, impact and longevity of the women's movement in Ireland
