The Rise of the Dark Side: Dark Pool Trading and the Two-Tiered Implication

    Get PDF
The United States equity market is made up of both private and public trading venues, creating a framework dark and light trading liquidity. Private or non-publicly visible liquidity is housed in dark venues while liquidity visible to the public sits in light locations. Light markets follow strict real-time public reporting requirements for trade volume and price; their dark counterparts execute transactions without a real-time reporting requirement. The informational asymmetries that result from this difference in reporting create a two-tiered market. The dark sector\u27s participants know both the public and dark, private, trade volumes and price, while the public participating in the light market knows only the publicly reported light sector volume and price information. Dark sector participants, institutional investors, then participate in the market using both private and public information, whereas the public investor only has access to the public information. This project seeks to motivate a real-time reporting requirement for trade volume and price in the dark sector of the market in order to remedy this public versus private asymmetry. The informational parameters in this thesis are only those relating to the trades taking place and their respective volumes and prices, not other outside of the market or participant specific informational parameters commonly used in the study of informational asymmetries. This project is an attempt to bridge both the legal aspects and economic foundations relating to the issues surrounding dark sector reporting. Sections I through IV seek to detail the sector and its regulation while sections V through VII briefly describe the related economic literature and the simple model at the heart of this thesis. Additional relevant citations on many issues outside the narrow breadth of this project can be found in the appendices and bibliography

A study of the food environment at Australian family day care

    Get PDF
Overweight and obesity in childhood is a significant public health issue. Family day care (FDC) offers a setting where good eating habits can be nurtured in young children, yet often the food environment is unhealthy. This study aims to determine FDC educators’ knowledge and confidence about nutrition and the barriers and enablers to supporting healthy food environments. Australian FDC educators were recruited to a mixed methods study using self-administered e-surveys and qualitative in-depth interviews. The survey data (n = 188) revealed good knowledge about sugary foods, but poor knowledge of protein-rich foods. Nutrition knowledge was not associated with confidence to make nutrition recommendations. Interviews (n = 9) revealed parents’ dietary choices and educators’ personal beliefs as barriers to healthy food environments, although importantly, the FDC educator role was identified as being pivotal in supporting the health and wellbeing of children and their families. This study highlights that FDC-specific nutrition education and support is vital to ensure children at FDC and their families are exposed to healthy food environments. Research to investigate specific avenues for nutrition education promotion programs specifically designed to support the unique role played by FDC educators is needed, in order to support the long-term health and welfare of the next generation of Australians

    Navigating Post-Disaster Repair and Reconstruction

The pressure to rebuild after a disaster can be fierce and unrelenting. Colleges and universities impacted by an event will be pushed to re-open the doors and resume teaching and research quickly. What are the factors to consider? How do you balance the lost revenues, damage to research, faculty pay requirements, housing of students, temporary facilities and alternative transportation, communication, housing, lecture space, research and administrative computing needs? It’s in the best interest of your institution to have a plan for how these repairs or reconstruction efforts will be funded. In addition to the issues of re-engagement you also need to understand the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance Program requirements for reimbursement and eligibility. While FEMA’s program offers reimbursements to most colleges and universities, it comes with requirements and restrictions that need to be understood in order to protect your institution’s investment and assure maximum return on investments. This session will cover the common challenges faced by program participants and offer suggestions on how to avoid common pitfalls. Learning outcomes: Awareness of FEMA’s Public Assistance Program and relevancy to colleges and universities Understanding of common challenges faced by colleges and universities in participating in the program Ideas on how to plan for the financial recovery aspects of disaste

Relaxed plasma equilibria and entropy-related plasma self-organization principles

    Get PDF
The concept of plasma relaxation as a constrained energy minimization is reviewed. Recent work by the authors on generalizing this approach to partially relaxed threedimensional plasma systems in a way consistent with chaos theory is discussed, with a view to clarifying the thermodynamic aspects of the variational approach used. Other entropy-related approaches to finding long-time steady states of turbulent or chaotic plasma systems are also briefly reviewed
