New early Eocene tapiromorph perissodactyls from the Ghazij Formation of Pakistan, with implications for mammalian biochronology in Asia
Early Eocene mammals from Indo-Pakistan have only recently come under study. Here we describe the first tapiromorph perissodactyls from the subcontinent. Gandheralophus minor n. gen. and n. sp. and G. robustus n. sp. are two species of Isectolophidae differing in size and in reduction of the anterior dentition. Gandheralophus is probably derived from a primitive isectolophid such as Orientolophus hengdongensis from the earliest Eocene of China, and may be part of a South Asian lineage that also contains Karagalax from the middle Eocene of Pakistan. Two specimens are referred to a new, unnamed species of Lophialetidae. Finally, a highly diagnostic M3 and a molar fragment are described as the new eomoropid chalicothere Litolophus ghazijensis sp. nov. The perissodactyls described here, in contrast to most other mammalian groups published from the early Eocene of Indo-Pakistan, are most closely related to forms known from East and Central Asia. Tapiromorpha are diverse and biochronologically important in the Eocene there and our results allow the first biochronological correlation between early Eocene mammal faunas in Indo-Pakistan and the rest of Asia. We suggest that the upper Ghazij Formation of Pakistan is best correlated with the middle or late part of the Bumbanian Asian Land-Mammal Age, while the Kuldana and Subathu Formations of Pakistan and India are best correlated with the Arshantan Asian Land-Mammal Age
Dark matter and sub-GeV hidden U(1) in GMSB models
Motivated by the recent PAMELA and ATIC data, one is led to a scenario with
heavy vector-like dark matter in association with a hidden sector
below GeV scale. Realizing this idea in the context of gauge mediated
supersymmetry breaking (GMSB), a heavy scalar component charged under
is found to be a good dark matter candidate which can be searched for direct
scattering mediated by the Higgs boson and/or by the hidden gauge boson. The
latter turns out to put a stringent bound on the kinetic mixing parameter
between and : . For the typical range
of model parameters, we find that the decay rates of the ordinary lightest
neutralino into hidden gauge boson/gaugino and photon/gravitino are comparable,
and the former decay mode leaves displaced vertices of lepton pairs and missing
energy with distinctive length scale larger than 20 cm for invariant lepton
pair mass below 0.5 GeV. An unsatisfactory aspect of our model is that the
Sommerfeld effect cannot raise the galactic dark matter annihilation by more

The Empirical Mass-Luminosity Relation for Low Mass Stars
This work is devoted to improving empirical mass-luminosity relations and
mass-metallicity-luminosity relation for low mass stars. For these stars,
observational data in the mass-luminosity plane or the
mass-metallicity-luminosity space subject to non-negligible errors in all
coordinates with different dimensions. Thus a reasonable weight assigning
scheme is needed for obtaining more reliable results. Such a scheme is
developed, with which each data point can have its own due contribution.
Previous studies have shown that there exists a plateau feature in the
mass-luminosity relation. Taking into account the constraints from the
observational luminosity function, we find by fitting the observational data
using our weight assigning scheme that the plateau spans from 0.28 to 0.50
solar mass. Three-piecewise continuous improved mass-luminosity relations in K,
J, H and V bands, respectively, are obtained. The visual
mass-metallicity-luminosity relation is also improved based on our K band

A Pure-Glue Hidden Valley I. States and Decays
It is possible that the standard model is coupled, through new massive
charged or colored particles, to a hidden sector whose low energy dynamics is
controlled by a pure Yang-Mills theory, with no light matter. Such a sector
would have numerous metastable "hidden glueballs" built from the hidden gluons.
These states would decay to particles of the standard model. We consider the
phenomenology of this scenario, and find formulas for the lifetimes and
branching ratios of the most important of these states. The dominant decays are
to two standard model gauge bosons, or by radiative decays with photon
emission, leading to jet- and photon-rich signals.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figure
Family-school connections and internalizing problems among children living with asthma in urban, low-income neighborhoods
Children with asthma living in urban environments are at risk for experiencing internalizing problems and difficulties at school due to social context and health-related stressors. Parent confidence and participation in the school and childrenâs attitudes about school were explored in association with childrenâs depressed mood and school anxiety. Forty-five parentâchild dyads were recruited from urban community health centers. Most participants were members of ethnic minority groups. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that higher levels of parent confidence in the school were associated with fewer symptoms of school anxiety in children. Childrenâs attitudes toward school moderated the relation between parent participation in the school and childrenâs depressed mood. Specifically, lower levels of parent participation were associated with higher levels of depressed mood only for children with the least positive school attitudes. Although preliminary, these results suggest the importance of attending to familyâschool connections to optimize the school-related psychological functioning of children living with asthma in urban environments
Mathematical Aspects of the Periodic Law
We review different studies of the Periodic Law and the set of chemical
elements from a mathematical point of view. This discussion covers the first
attempts made in the 19th century up to the present day. Mathematics employed
to study the periodic system includes number theory, information theory, order
theory, set theory and topology. Each theory used shows that it is possible to
provide the Periodic Law with a mathematical structure. We also show that it is
possible to study the chemical elements taking advantage of their
phenomenological properties, and that it is not always necessary to reduce the
concept of chemical elements to the quantum atomic concept to be able to find
interpretations for the Periodic Law. Finally, a connection is noted between
the lengths of the periods of the Periodic Law and the philosophical

Incretin-based therapy: a powerful and promising weapon in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a progressive multisystemic disease that increases significantly cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. It is associated with obesity, insulin resistance, beta-cell dysfunction, and hyperglucagonemia, the combination of which typically leads to hyperglycemia. Incretin-based treatment modalities, and in particular glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, are able to successfully counteract several of the underlying pathophysiological abnormalities of T2DM. The pancreatic effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists include glucose-lowering effects by stimulating insulin secretion and inhibiting glucagon release in a strictly glucose-dependent manner, increased beta-cell proliferation, and decreased beta-cell apoptosis. GLP-1 receptors are widely expressed throughout human body; thus, GLP-1-based therapies exert pleiotropic and multisystemic effects that extend far beyond pancreatic islets. A large body of experimental and clinical data have suggested a considerable protective role of GLP-1 analogs in the cardiovascular system (decreased blood pressure, improved endothelial and myocardial function, functional recovery of failing and ischemic heart, arterial vasodilatation), kidneys (increased diuresis and natriuresis), gastrointestinal tract (delayed gastric emptying, reduced gastric acid secretion), and central nervous system (appetite suppression, neuroprotective properties). The pharmacologic use of GLP-1 receptor agonists has been shown to reduce bodyweight and systolic blood pressure, and significantly improve glycemic control and lipid profile. Interestingly, weight reduction induced by GLP-1 analogs reflects mainly loss of abdominal visceral fat. The critical issue of whether the emerging positive cardiometabolic effects of GLP-1 analogs can be translated into better clinical outcomes for diabetic patients in terms of long-term hard endpoints, such as cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, remains to be elucidated with prospective, large-scale clinical trials
Ebola virus epidemiology, transmission, and evolution during seven months in Sierra Leone
The 2013-2015 Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic is caused by the Makona variant of Ebola virus (EBOV). Early in the epidemic, genome sequencing provided insights into virus evolution and transmission and offered important information for outbreak response. Here, we analyze sequences from 232 patients sampled over 7 months in Sierra Leone, along with 86 previously released genomes from earlier in the epidemic. We confirm sustained human-to-human transmission within Sierra Leone and find no evidence for import or export of EBOV across national borders after its initial introduction. Using high-depth replicate sequencing, we observe both host-to-host transmission and recurrent emergence of intrahost genetic variants. We trace the increasing impact of purifying selection in suppressing the accumulation of nonsynonymous mutations over time. Finally, we note changes in the mucin-like domain of EBOV glycoprotein that merit further investigation. These findings clarify the movement of EBOV within the region and describe viral evolution during prolonged human-to-human transmission
