Extremely Metal-Poor Stars. VII. The Most Metal-Poor Dwarf, CS 22876-032
We report high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise, observations of the
extremely metal-poor double-lined spectroscopic binary CS 22876-032. The system
has a long period : P = 424.7 0.6 days. It comprises two main sequence
stars having effective temperatures 6300 K and 5600 K, with a ratio of
secondary to primary mass of 0.89 0.04. The metallicity of the system is
[Fe/H] = -3.71 0.11 0.12 (random and systematic errors) -- somewhat
higher than previous estimates. We find [Mg/Fe] = 0.50, typical of values of
less extreme halo material. [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Ti/Fe], however, all have
significantly lower values, ~ 0.0-0.1, suggesting that the heavier elements
might have been underproduced relative to Mg in the material from which this
object formed. In the context of the hypothesis that the abundance patterns of
extremely metal-poor stars are driven by individual enrichment events and the
models of Woosley and Weaver (1995), the data for CS 22876-032 are consistent
with its having been enriched by a zero-metallicity supernova of mass 30
M. As the most metal-poor near-main-sequence-turnoff star currently
known, the primary of the system has the potential to strongly constrain the
primordial lithium abundance. We find A(Li) (= log(N(Li)/N(H)) + 12.00) = 2.03
0.07, which is consistent with the finding of Ryan et al. (1999) that for
stars of extremely low metallicity A(Li) is a function of [Fe/H].Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical

Optical Morphologies of Millijansky Radio Galaxies Observed by HST and in the VLA FIRST Survey
We report on a statistical study of the 51 radio galaxies at the millijansky
flux level from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters,
including their optical morphologies and structure obtained with the Hubble
Space Telescope. Our optical imaging is significantly deeper (~2 mag) than
previous studies with the superior angular resolution of space-based imaging.
We that find 8/51 (16%) of the radio sources have no optically identifiable
counterpart to AB~24 mag. For the remaining 43 sources, only 25 are
sufficiently resolved in the HST images to reliably assign a visual
classification: 15 (60%) are elliptical galaxies, 2 (8%) are late-type spiral
galaxies, 1 (4%) is an S0, 3 (12%) are point-like objects (quasars), and 4
(16%) are merger systems. We find a similar distribution of optical types with
measurements of the Sersic index. The optical magnitude distribution of these
galaxies peaks at I~20.7+-0.5 AB mag, which is ~3 mag brighter than the depth
of our typical HST field and is thus not due to the WFPC2 detection limit. This
supports the luminosity-dependent density evolutionary model, where the
majority of faint radio galaxies typically have L*-optical luminosities and a
median redshift of z~0.8 with a relatively abrupt redshift cut-off at z>~2. We
discuss our results in the context of the evolution of elliptical galaxies and

Dynamic clonal progression in xenografts of acute lymphoblastic leukemia with intrachromosomal amplification of chromosome 21
Intrachromosomal amplification of chromosome 21 is a heterogeneous chromosomal rearrangement occurring in 2% of childhood precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. There are no cell lines with iAMP21 and these abnormalities are too complex to faithfully engineer in animal models. As a resource for future functional and pre-clinical studies, we have created xenografts from intrachromosomal amplification of chromosome 21 leukemia patient blasts and characterised them by in-vivo and ex-vivo luminescent imaging, FLOW immunophenotyping, and histological and ultrastructural analysis of bone marrow and the central nervous system. Investigation of up to three generations of xenografts revealed phenotypic evolution, branching genomic architecture and, compared with other B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia genetic subtypes, greater clonal diversity of leukemia initiating cells. In support of intrachromosomal amplification of chromosome 21 as a primary genetic abnormality, it was always retained through generations of xenografts, although we also observed the first example of structural evolution of this rearrangement. Clonal segregation in xenografts revealed convergent evolution of different secondary genomic abnormalities implicating several known tumour suppressor genes and a region, containing the B-cell adaptor, PIK3AP1, and nuclear receptor co-repressor, LCOR, in the progression of B-ALL. Tracking of mutations in patients and derived xenografts provided evidence for co-operation between abnormalities activating the RAS pathway in B-ALL and for their aggressive clonal expansion in the xeno-environment. Bi-allelic loss of the CDKN2A/B locus was recurrently maintained or emergent in xenografts and also strongly selected as RNA sequencing demonstrated a complete absence of reads for genes associated with the deletions
Efficacy of Online Training for Improving Camp Staff Competency
Preparing competent staff is a critical issue within the camp community. This quasi-experimental study examined the effectiveness of an online course for improving staff competency in camp healthcare practices among college-aged camp staff and a comparison group (N = 55). We hypothesized that working in camp would increase competency test scores due to opportunities for staff to experientially apply knowledge learned online. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyse the cross-level effects of a between-individuals factor (assignment to experimental or comparison group) and within-individual effects of time (pre-test, post-test #1, and post-test #2) on online course test scores. At post-test #2, the difference in average test scores between groups was ~30 points, with the treatment group scoring lower on average than the comparison group. Factors that may have influenced these findings are explored, including fatigue and the limited durability of online learning. Recommendations for research and practice are discussed

Mitochondrial DNA Manipulations Affect Tau Oligomerization
Background:Mitochondrial dysfunction and tau aggregation occur in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and exposing cells or rodents to mitochondrial toxins alters their tau. Objective:To further explore how mitochondria influence tau, we measured tau oligomer levels in human neuronal SH-SY5Y cells with different mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) manipulations. Methods:Specifically, we analyzed cells undergoing ethidium bromide-induced acute mtDNA depletion, ρ0 cells with chronic mtDNA depletion, and cytoplasmic hybrid (cybrid) cell lines containing mtDNA from AD subjects. Results:We found cytochrome oxidase activity was particularly sensitive to acute mtDNA depletion, evidence of metabolic re-programming in the ρ0 cells, and a relatively reduced mtDNA content in cybrids generated through AD subject mitochondrial transfer. In each case tau oligomer levels increased, and acutely depleted and AD cybrid cells also showed a monomer to oligomer shift. Conclusion:We conclude a cell’s mtDNA affects tau oligomerization. Overlapping tau changes across three mtDNA-manipulated models establishes the reproducibility of the phenomenon, and its presence in AD cybrids supports its AD-relevance
International education: a force for peace and cross-cultural understanding?
This paper discusses the notion that the international sojourn has the potential to transform sojourners into cultural mediators who carry the power to improve global relations. A year-long ethnographic study of the adjustment experiences of international postgraduate students in England revealed a universal early enthusiasm for cross-cultural contact that was matched by a widespread adoption of segregated patterns of interacting. The most common friendship networks were described by bonds with conationals, and yet all students attested to an increase in their cultural learning and mindfulness by the end of the sojourn. Nevertheless, intercultural competence was maximised only in those few students who pursued a multicultural strategy of interaction, leading the researcher to call on Higher Education Institutions to instigate policies to encourage lasting cross-cultural contact
Geographically touring the eastern bloc: British geography, travel cultures and the Cold War
This paper considers the role of travel in the generation of geographical knowledge of the eastern bloc by British geographers. Based on oral history and surveys of published work, the paper examines the roles of three kinds of travel experience: individual private travels, tours via state tourist agencies, and tours by academic delegations. Examples are drawn from across the eastern bloc, including the USSR, Poland, Romania, East Germany and Albania. The relationship between travel and publication is addressed, notably within textbooks, and in the Geographical Magazine. The study argues for the extension of accounts of cultures of geographical travel, and seeks to supplement the existing historiography of Cold War geography
