From the Plains to the plate : can the beef industry regain market share?

    Get PDF
Over the past several decades, the beef industry has seen a sharp drop in its share of the retail meat market. While per capita meat consumption has grown, per capita beef consumption has plunged. Explaining the drop in beef's market share has become a favorite pastime of industry analysts. In fact, a family feud of sorts has broken out in the industry between those who think the decline largely reflects increases in beef's price relative to competing meats and those who stress nonprice factors such as lifestyle changes, health concerns, and so forth as causes of decline. Regardless of the cause, however, the solution to the problem is likely the same.> Whatever the cause of beef's declining market share, the pork and poultry industries have clearly benefited. Poultry, in particular, has seen its market share soar in recent years as per capita consumption boomed. Most analysts attribute the success of the poultry and pork industries to their ability to achieve a high degree of vertical coordination between different links in the production chain. In particular, vertical coordination has allowed them to become consumer-product driven industries while achieving significant cost reductions that have lowered retail prices.> Lamb and Beshear suggest that for the beef industry to recapture its lost market share it must become a consumer-driven industry. A critical step in the process is achieving a greater degree of vertical coordination across the production chain. Vertical coordination in beef production may take many different forms. In fact, three alternative forms of vertical coordination in the beef industry seem possible, from modest changes in how beef is priced, to marketing cooperatives and producer alliances, to the most radical change full vertical integration of beef production. Which path of change the industry will follow is unclear, but marketing cooperatives appear to offer the best chance for the industry to recapture market share.Animal industry

Practical Understanding and Application of the Approbation of Christ

In December 1912, William Borden embarked on a journey halfway around the world to become a missionary to Chinese Muslims. Just four months later, Borden contracted meningitis, which took his life. He was never to serve as a missionary. American newspapers picked up the story, as Borden was the heir to the Borden family fortune. The outcry by some was, What a waste! People lamented that a man who had so much to live for had wasted his life by giving it to God and dying before he had a chance to fulfill his calling or collect his fortune. William Borden addressed these cries before his death. In his journal, he wrote these words, No reserve, no retreat, no regrets. A life lived for the glory of God can make this same claim of no reserve, no retreat, and no regrets. Christ demonstrated approbation during His time on earth among those He encountered. He gave approbation to those who lived with no reserve, no retreat, and no regrets. Christ approved those who sacrificed extravagantly, abandoned fully, and obeyed completely. Jesus Himself earned the approbation of God by displaying these same qualities of sacrifice, abandon, and obedience through His life and death. An understanding of the approbation of Christ during His time on earth will not only show the people and actions that merited His approval but will also lay the foundation of what Jesus Himself did to gain the approbation of His Father

Sex and Neuroticism: Frequent Sex Protects Intimates from the Negative Implications of Their Neuroticism

A robust literature documents numerous negative implications of neuroticism for romantic relationships. The current study was the first to demonstrate necessary information regarding how couples can protect against these implications. Given the role of negative affect in the association between neuroticism and relationship difficulties, and given the role of sex in reducing negative affect, the current 8-wave longitudinal study of 72 newlywed couples tested the prediction that sexual frequency would moderate the association between neuroticism and marital satisfaction. Lagged multilevel modeling analyses supported this prediction. Specifically, although neuroticism was negatively associated with changes in marital satisfaction among spouses engaging in less frequent sex over the prior 6 months, neuroticism was unrelated to changes in satisfaction among spouses reporting more frequent sex over the prior 6 months. These findings join others in highlighting the importance of considering the broader context of the relationship to developing a complete understanding of relationship development

Young women\u27s perspectives on tanning in solariums: A constructivist grounded theory study

Despite Australia\u27s general public awareness regarding the dangers of UVR exposure, young women continue to tan in solariums. This study utilised a qualitative approach with eight in-depth interviews to explore young women\u27s perspectives on tanning in solariums. The \u27core category\u27 or storyline underlying participants\u27 responses was \u27being in control\u27. Three core themes emerged from the data: \u27positive reinforcers\u27, which related to attractions and motivations to tan, \u27possessing knowledge\u27 which concerned the different types of knowledge which participants held, and \u27change\u27 which represented participants\u27 outcomes from external pressures. It was found that body image concerns and reinforcing rewards were motivators to use solariums and that a tam1ed skin may triger psychological dependence for some women. The findings from the current study make a unique contribution to the body of knowledge and provide a case for further studies in order to inform practice and policy formation

Noongar Dandjoo: A Work Integrated Learning Case Study

    Get PDF
As media employers increasingly shift the burden for the provision of skills training from themselves to universities, academics must develop innovative ways to ensure their graduates are truly job ready, beyond merely simulating industry practice and offering conventional work experience opportunities. Under the umbrella term Work Integrated Learning (WIL), universities have adopted a range of educational approaches that combine theory with practice to enhance learning experiences for students. But not all WIL initiatives are the same and nor do they always achieve their objectives. However, three series of the award-winning student TV production Noongar Dandjoo, produced by Curtin University, offer a new model for teaching substantive journalism, program production as well as cultural aware- ness and cultural sensitivity under an offshoot of WIL called service-learning. As this article seeks to demonstrate, Noongar Dandjoo is making a lasting and positive impression on students who are applying their experiences working with indigenous people beyond university
