Da Madrid a Venezia: l’ascesa del mercante nuovo cristiano Agostino Fonseca

Agostino Fonseca è un ricco mercante portoghese, nuovo cristiano, che approda a Venezia negli anni Trenta del Seicento. Conosciuto dalle istituzioni come contrabbandiere, spia dell’ambasciatore spagnolo e presunto marrano, è anche un nobile di Filippo IV di Spagna e, dal 1665, patrizio veneziano. Acquistato il titolo, la casa Fonseca intreccia alleanze matrimoniali con le altre famiglie aggregate, senza abbandonare i forti legami familiari con i Cortizos de Villasante, potenti banchieri portoghesi al servizio della corona spagnola e che giungono a loro volta a Venezia dopo la rottura con la corte di Madrid. Figura di intersezione tra diverse sfere sociali, Agostino Fonseca ottiene ricchezza e prestigio grazie alla possibilità di attingere risorse dai diversi ambiti sociali di appartenenza. Al tempo stesso proprio in questa eterogenea rete sociale risiedono i motivi che portarono, nell’arco di una generazione, all’estinzione della sua casa.Agostino Fonseca is a wealthy New Christian merchant who arrived in Venice in the thirties of the Seventeenth century. Known by Venetian institutions as smuggler, Spanish ambassador’s spy and presumed marrano, he is also a nobleman of Philip IV of Spain and, by 1665, a Venetian patrician. Having acquired the title, the Fonseca family forges marriage alliances with the aggregate families, without leaving the intense family and economic ties with the Cortizos de Villasante, powerful Portuguese bankers who served the Spanish crown and who get to Venice after splitting up with the court of Madrid. Intersection character among different social spheres, Agostino Fonseca obtains wealth and prestige thanks to the possibility of gathering sources from those different social spheres. At the same time in this heterogeneous social network lies the reason of the extinction of his house in the next generation
