    Making FORS2 fit for exoplanet observations (again)

    For about three years, it was known that precision spectrophotometry with FORS2 suffered from systematic errors that made quantitative observations of planetary transits impossible. We identified the Longitudinal Atmospheric Dispersion Compensator (LADC) as the most likely culprit, and therefore engaged in a project to exchange the LADC prisms with the uncoated ones from FORS1. This led to a significant improvement in the depth of FORS2 zero points, a reduction in the systematic noise, and should make FORS2 again competitive for transmission spectroscopy of exoplanets.Comment: To appear in the March issue of the ESO Messenge

    Emitter-site selective photoelectron circular dichroism of trifluoromethyloxirane

    The angle-resolved inner-shell photoionization of R-trifluoromethyloxirane, C3H3F3O, is studied experimentally and theoretically. Thereby, we investigate the photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) for nearly-symmetric O 1s and F 1s electronic orbitals, which are localized on different molecular sites. The respective dichroic β1\beta_{1} and angular distribution β2\beta_{2} parameters are measured at the photoelectron kinetic energies from 1 to 16 eV by using variably polarized synchrotron radiation and velocity map imaging spectroscopy. The present experimental results are in good agreement with the outcome of ab initio electronic structure calculations. We report a sizable chiral asymmetry β1\beta_{1} of up to about 9% for the K-shell photoionization of oxygen atom. For the individual fluorine atoms, the present calculations predict asymmetries of similar size. However, being averaged over all fluorine atoms, it drops down to about 2%, as also observed in the present experiment. Our study demonstrates a strong emitter- and site-sensitivity of PECD in the one-photon inner-shell ionization of this chiral molecule

    How to deal with non-detectable and outlying values in biomarker research: Best practices and recommendations for univariate imputation approaches

    Non-detectable (ND) and outlying concentration values (OV) are a common challenge of biomarker investigations. However, best practices on how to aptly deal with the affected cases are still missing. The high methodological heterogeneity in biomarker-oriented research, as for example, in the field of psychoneuroendocrinology, and the statistical bias in some of the applied methods may compromise the robustness, comparability, and generalizability of research findings. In this paper, we describe the occurrence of ND and OV in terms of a model that considers them as censored data, for instance due to measurement error cutoffs. We then present common univariate approaches in handling ND and OV by highlighting their respective strengths and drawbacks. In a simulation study with lognormal distributed data, we compare the performance of six selected methods, ranging from simple and commonly used to more sophisticated imputation procedures, in four scenarios with varying patterns of censored values as well as for a broad range of cutoffs. Especially deletion, but also fixed-value imputations bear a high risk of biased and pseudo-precise parameter estimates. We also introduce censored regressions as a more sophisticated option for a direct modeling of the censored data. Our analyses demonstrate the impact of ND and OV handling methods on the results of biomarker-oriented research, supporting the need for transparent reporting and the implementation of best practices. In our simulations, the use of imputed data from the censored intervals of a fitted lognormal distribution shows preferable properties regarding our established criteria. We provide the algorithm for this favored routine for a direct application in R on the Open Science Framework (https://osf.io/spgtv). Further research is needed to evaluate the performance of the algorithm in various contexts, for example when the underlying assumptions do not hold. We conclude with recommendations and potential further improvements for the field

    Rabies Management Implications Based on Raccoon Population Density Indexes

    An estimate or index of target species density is important in determining oral rabies vaccination (ORV) bait densities to control and eliminate specific rabies variants. From 1997–2011, we indexed raccoon (Procyon lotor) densities 253 times based on cumulative captures on 163 sites from Maine to Alabama, USA, near ORV zones created to prevent raccoon rabies from spreading to new areas. We conducted indexing under a common cage trapping protocol near the time of annual ORV to aid in bait density decisions. Unique raccoons (n = 8,415) accounted for 68.0% of captures (n = 12,367). We recaptured raccoons 2,669 times. We applied Schnabel and Huggins mark‐recapture models on sites with ≥3 years of capture data and ≥25% recaptures as context for raccoon density indexes (RDIs). Simple linear relationships between RDIs and mark‐recapture estimates supported application of our 2 index. Raccoon density indexes ranged from 0.0–56.9 raccoons/km . For bait density decisions, we evaluated RDIs in the following 4 raccoon density groups, which were statistically different: (0.0–5.0 [n = 70], 5.1–15.0 [n = 129], 15.1–25.0 [n = 31], and \u3e25.0 raccoons/km2 [n = 23]). Mean RDI was positively associated with a higher percentage of developed land cover and a lower percentage of evergreen forest. Non‐target species composition (excluding recaptured raccoons) accounted for 32.0% of captures. Potential bait competitors accounted for 76.5% of non‐targets. The opossum (Didelphis virginiana) was the primary potential bait competitor from 27°N to 44°N latitude, north of which it was numerically replaced by the striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis). We selected the RDI approach over mark-recapture methods because of costs, geographic scope, staff availability, and the need for supplemental serologic samples. The 4 density groups provided adequate sensitivity to support bait density decisions for the current 2 bait density options. Future improvements to the method include providing random trapping locations to field personnel to prevent trap clustering and marking non‐targets to better characterize bait competitors

    Renewed global partnerships and redesigned roadmaps for rabies prevention and control

    Canine rabies, responsible for most human rabies deaths, is a serious global public health concern. This zoonosis is entirely preventable, but by focusing solely upon rabies prevention in humans, this "incurable wound" persists at high costs. Although preventing human deaths through canine rabies elimination is feasible, dog rabies control is often neglected, because dogs are not considered typical economic commodities by the animal health sector. Here, we demonstrate that the responsibility of managing rabies falls upon multiple sectors, that a truly integrated approach is the key to rabies elimination, and that considerable progress has been made to this effect. Achievements include the construction of global rabies networks and organizational partnerships; development of road maps, operational toolkits, and a blueprint for rabies prevention and control; and opportunities for scaling up and replication of successful programs. Progress must continue towards overcoming the remaining challenges preventing the ultimate goal of rabies elimination

    Magnetic behaviour of Eu_2CuSi_3: Large negative magnetoresistance above Curie temperature

    We report here the results of magnetic susceptibility, electrical-resistivity, magnetoresistance (MR), heat-capacity and ^{151}Eu Mossbauer effect measurements on the compound, Eu_2CuSi_3, crystallizing in an AlB_2-derived hexagonal structure. The results establish that Eu ions are divalent, undergoing long-range ferromagnetic-ordering below (T_C=) 37 K. An interesting observation is that the sign of MR is negative even at temperatures close to 3T_C, with increasing magnitude with decreasing temperature exhibiting a peak at T_C. This observation, being made for a Cu containing magnetic rare-earth compound for the first time, is of relevance to the field of collosal magnetoresistance.Comment: To appear in PRB, RevTex, 4 pages text + 6 psFigs.     Experimental study of pedestrian flow through a bottleneck

    In this work the results of a bottleneck experiment with pedestrians are presented in the form of total times, fluxes, specific fluxes, and time gaps. A main aim was to find the dependence of these values from the bottleneck width. The results show a linear decline of the specific flux with increasing width as long as only one person at a time can pass, and a constant value for larger bottleneck widths. Differences between small (one person at a time) and wide bottlenecks (two persons at a time) were also found in the distribution of time gaps.Comment: accepted for publication in J. Stat. Mec

    Recursive Polynomial Remainder Sequence and the Nested Subresultants

    We give two new expressions of subresultants, nested subresultant and reduced nested subresultant, for the recursive polynomial remainder sequence (PRS) which has been introduced by the author. The reduced nested subresultant reduces the size of the subresultant matrix drastically compared with the recursive subresultant proposed by the authors before, hence it is much more useful for investigation of the recursive PRS. Finally, we discuss usage of the reduced nested subresultant in approximate algebraic computation, which motivates the present work.Comment: 12 pages.
