The Pine Needle, vol 5, no 2

Libraries and archives collect materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. As a result, materials such as those presented here may reflect sexist, misogynistic, abusive, racist, or discriminatory attitudes or actions that some may find disturbing, harmful, or difficult to view. Both a humor and literary magazine, The Pine Needle was a University of Maine student periodical that began publication in the fall of 1946, the first post-World War II semester that saw GI\u27s returning to campus. Unlike past UMaine student publications, The Needle celebrated the sexualization of co-eds and the use of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol by students. Outrage expressed by older alumni resulted stricter oversight of the magazine beginning in 1947. By 1949, the first wave of World War II GI\u27s were graduating and the restless, rebellious tone of The Needle began to shift as the threat of the Korean War loomed. The cover art for the Exam Issue is a re-used, unsigned cover illustration from April 1947 that, in this version, includes a series of superimposed prank exam questions

Testis and Antler Dysgenesis in Sitka Black-Tailed Deer on Kodiak Island, Alaska: Sequela of Environmental Endocrine Disruption?

It had been observed that many male Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) on Kodiak Island, Alaska, had abnormal antlers, were cryptorchid, and presented no evidence of hypospadias. We sought to better understand the problem and investigated 171 male deer for phenotypic aberrations and 12 for detailed testicular histopathology. For the low-lying Aliulik Peninsula (AP), 61 of 94 deer were bilateral cryptorchids (BCOs); 70% of these had abnormal antlers. Elsewhere on the Kodiak Archipelago, only 5 of 65 deer were BCOs. All 11 abdominal testes examined had no spermatogenesis but contained abnormalities including carcinoma in situ–like cells, possible precursors of seminoma; Sertoli cell, Leydig cell, and stromal cell tumors; carcinoma and adenoma of rete testis; and microlithiasis or calcifications. Cysts also were evident within the excurrent ducts. Two of 10 scrotal testes contained similar abnormalities, although spermatogenesis was ongoing. We cannot rule out that these abnormalities are linked sequelae of a mutation(s) in a founder animal, followed by transmission over many years and causing high prevalence only on the AP. However, based on lesions observed, we hypothesize that it is more likely that this testis–antler dysgenesis resulted from continuing exposure of pregnant females to an estrogenic environmental agent(s), thereby transforming testicular cells, affecting development of primordial antler pedicles, and blocking transabdominal descent of fetal testes. A browse (e.g., kelp) favored by deer in this locale might carry the putative estrogenic agent(s)

The objective of this work was to evaluate boar semen fertility by a sperm-binding assay to a synthetic substrate. Motility (MOT) and percentage of bound sperm (PSB) were evaluated after 5, 24, 48 and 72 hours of storage at 17°C. PSB was analyzed in solutions containing 6.25 or 12.5 million of spermatozoa/mL, with or without bovine serum albumin (BSA), processed from two to five ejaculates of four boars. Fifty eight gilts were inseminated, a single time, 24 hours after the beginning of estrus. There was a positive correlation (P = 0.0001; r = 0.33) between MOT and PSB. Higher percentages of PSB were observed with 12.5 million of spermatozoa/mL and in the presence of BSA (P < 0.05). After 72 hours, boar 3 showed lower PSB (P < 0.05) than the other boars. The cleavage (TC) and normal embryo rates did not differ among boars, but boar 3 showed less than 70.0% of TC belonging to the superior quartile while boars 1, 2 and 4 had more than 75.0%. After 24 hours of sperm storage, boars differ in their sperm binding to the synthetic substrate. Binding of swine spermatozoa to the synthetic substrate is higher in the presence of BSA and with the increase of spermatic concentration.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a fertilidade de sêmen suíno pelo teste de ligação de espermatozóides a um substrato sintético.

Once a pen a time... Revitalisation of a manufacturing plant in Aspern

The focus of this work is a former production facility in the historic center of Aspern. The vacant existing buildings on the company premises of Hemos Schreibwaren GmbH were erected in the 1960s and, due to their design, volumes and especially their prominent location, represent an ensemble that stands out from the surrounding area. Not only the landmark character of the company premises, but also its relationship to the surrounding, rapidly changing district, give the situation its charm. An initial analysis is devoted to past and current dynamics on the urban planning level, and afterwards to the existing structure on the building level. This forms the basis for a proposal for revitalization in the form of a mixed re-use as an event and office workplace. By means of different variant studies, possibilities are shown in the methodology on which later design decisions are based, which lead to the result presented at the end.19
