    TeachCLIP: Multi-Grained Teaching for Efficient Text-to-Video Retrieval

    For text-to-video retrieval (T2VR), which aims to retrieve unlabeled videos by ad-hoc textual queries, CLIP-based methods are dominating. Compared to CLIP4Clip which is efficient and compact, the state-of-the-art models tend to compute video-text similarity by fine-grained cross-modal feature interaction and matching, putting their scalability for large-scale T2VR into doubt. For efficient T2VR, we propose TeachCLIP with multi-grained teaching to let a CLIP4Clip based student network learn from more advanced yet computationally heavy models such as X-CLIP, TS2-Net and X-Pool . To improve the student's learning capability, we add an Attentional frame-Feature Aggregation (AFA) block, which by design adds no extra storage/computation overhead at the retrieval stage. While attentive weights produced by AFA are commonly used for combining frame-level features, we propose a novel use of the weights to let them imitate frame-text relevance estimated by the teacher network. As such, AFA provides a fine-grained learning (teaching) channel for the student (teacher). Extensive experiments on multiple public datasets justify the viability of the proposed method

    Evolutionary Stages and Disk Properties of Young Stellar Objects in the Perseus Cloud

    We investigated the evolutionary stages and disk properties of 211 Young stellar objects (YSOs) across the Perseus cloud by modeling the broadband optical to mid-infrared (IR) spectral energy distribution (SED). By exploring the relationships among the turnoff wave bands lambda_turnoff (longward of which significant IR excesses above the stellar photosphere are observed), the excess spectral index alpha_excess at lambda <~ 24 microns, and the disk inner radius R_in (from SED modeling) for YSOs of different evolutionary stages, we found that the median and standard deviation of alpha_excess of YSOs with optically thick disks tend to increase with lambda_turnoff, especially at lambda_turnoff >= 5.8 microns, whereas the median fractional dust luminosities L_dust/L_star tend to decrease with lambda_turnoff. This points to an inside-out disk clearing of small dust grains. Moreover, a positive correlation between alpha_excess and R_in was found at alpha_excess > ~0 and R_in > ~10 ×\times the dust sublimation radius R_sub, irrespective of lambda_turnoff, L_dust/L_star and disk flaring. This suggests that the outer disk flaring either does not evolve synchronously with the inside-out disk clearing or has little influence on alpha_excess shortward of 24 microns. About 23% of our YSO disks are classified as transitional disks, which have lambda_turnoff >= 5.8 microns and L_dust/L_star >10^(-3). The transitional disks and full disks occupy distinctly different regions on the L_dust/L_star vs. alpha_excess diagram. Taking L_dust/L_star as an approximate discriminator of disks with (>0.1) and without (<0.1) considerable accretion activity, we found that 65% and 35% of the transitional disks may be consistent with being dominantly cleared by photoevaporation and dynamical interaction respectively.     A bathypelagic ostracod Conchoecissa nigromaculatus sp. nov. (Myodocopa, Halocyprididae) from the South China Sea

    Pelagic ostracods are one of the main groups of zooplankton and are abundant in marine ecosystems worldwide. The record of marine planktonic ostracod species in the central and southern part of the South China Sea accounts over for one-third of the total recorded marine planktonic ostracods in seas around China. In this study, we examined and compared the specimens from a recent cruise in this region that appeared to be different from previously described species of genus Conchoecissa, and then confirmed them as a new bathypelagic species Conchoecissa nigromaculatus. These specimens clearly differed from the other species of genus Conchoecissa with differences observed in the size, carapace, locations of glands, mandible, maxilla, sixth limb, and furca. In this species, mandibular coxal endite has no ventral finger process, maxilla has prominently large endites and has only two claws on the tip, the sixth limb has very simple endites, and this species has distinctive features not previously observed in the tribe Conchoeciini before. It is therefore necessary to emend the diagnosis of this group

    Interactions Between Emodin and Efflux Transporters on Rat Enterocyte by a Validated Ussing Chamber Technique

    Emodin, a major active anthraquinone, frequently interacts with other drugs. As changes of efflux transporters on intestine are one of the essential reasons why the drugs interact with each other, a validated Ussing chamber technique was established to detect the interactions between emodin and efflux transporters, including P-glycoprotein (P-gp), multidrug-resistant associated protein 2 (MRP2), and multidrug-resistant associated protein 3 (MRP3). Digoxin, pravastatin, and teniposide were selected as the test substrates of P-gp, MRP2, and MRP3. Verapamil, MK571, and benzbromarone were their special inhibitors. The results showed that verapamil, MK571, and benzbromarone could increase digoxin, pravastatin, and teniposide absorption, and decrease their Er values, respectively. Verapamil (220 ÎŒM) could significantly increase emodin absorption at 9.25 ÎŒM. In the presence of MK571 (186 ÎŒM), the Papp values of emodin from M-S were significantly increased and the efflux ratio decreased. With the treatment of emodin (185, 370, and 740 ÎŒM), digoxin absorption was significantly decreased while teniposide increased. These results indicated that emodin might be the substrate of P-gp and MRP2. Besides, it might be a P-gp inducer and MRP3 inhibitor on enterocyte, which are reported for the first time. These results will be helpful to explain the drug–drug interaction mechanisms between emodin and other drugs and provide basic data for clinical combination therapy

    Collaborative multidisciplinary management and expertise of cT2-3 locally advanced operable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma:two case reports

    Background: The accurate clinical staging of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is pivotal for guiding treatment strategies. However, the current precision in staging for clinical T (cT)2 and cT3 stages remains unsatisfactory. This article discusses the role of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in the clinical staging and formulation of neoadjuvant treatment strategies for locally advanced operable ESCC. These challenges underscore the importance of precise staging in the decision-making process for appropriate therapeutic interventions.Case Description: Through the lens of two patient case studies with locally advanced resectable ESCC, the article showcases the intricate process of treatment planning undertaken by MDTs. It captures a range of expert perspectives from Japan, China, Hong Kong (China), Korea, the USA, and Europe, focusing on the challenges of differentiating between cT2 and cT3 stages of the disease, which is a critical determinant in the management and therapeutic approach for patients.Conclusions: The article concludes that the accurate staging of ESCC is a cornerstone in determining the most suitable treatment strategies. It underscores the vital role that MDTs play in both clinical staging and the decision-making process for treatment. Highlighting the limitations in current diagnostic methods, the article emphasizes the urgent need for advanced research and the refinement of diagnostic tools to improve the precision of staging, particularly between the cT2 and cT3 stages. It suggests that future research should consider whether a reclassification of these stages could be warranted to enhance treatment planning and outcomes for patients with ESCC.<br/

    Galectin-3 alters the lateral mobility and clustering of beta 1-integrin receptors

    Glycoprotein receptors are influenced by myriad intermolecular interactions at the cell surface. Specific glycan structures may interact with endogenous lectins that enforce or disrupt receptor-receptor interactions. Glycoproteins bound by multivalent lectins may form extended oligomers or lattices, altering the lateral mobility of the receptor and influencing its function through endocytosis or changes in activation. In this study, we have examined the interaction of Galectin-3 (Gal-3), a human lectin, with adhesion receptors. We measured the effect of recombinant Gal-3 added exogenously on the lateral mobility of the alpha 5 beta 1 integrin on HeLa cells. Using single-particle tracking (SPT) we detected increased lateral mobility of the integrin in the presence of Gal-3, while its truncated C-terminal domain (Gal-3C) showed only minor reductions in lateral mobility. Treatment of cells with Gal-3 increased beta 1-integrin mediated migration with no apparent changes in viability. In contrast, Gal-3C decreased both cell migration and viability. Fluorescence microscopy allowed us to confirm that exogenous Gal-3 resulted in reorganization of the integrin into larger clusters. We used a proteomics analysis to confirm that cells expressed endogenous Gal-3, and found that addition of competitive oligosaccharide ligands for the lectin altered the lateral mobility of the integrin. Together, our results are consistent with a Gal-3-integrin lattice model of binding and confirm that the lateral mobility of integrins is natively regulated, in part, by galectins

    Inter-industry relatedness and industrial-policy efficiency: Evidence from China’s export processing zones

    International audienceIn this paper, we evaluate whether the efficiency of industrial policies depends on the consistency of their focus with the local productive structure. We use sector-level data from Chinese manufacturing surveys over the 1998–2007 period to show that the efficiency of the export-promoting policies implemented in export processing zones depends on whether they target activities for which the necessary capabilities and resources are available. We find export benefits from the EPZ policy which are greater for sectors with denser links with the local productive structure. Our results suggest that industrial-policy effectiveness is magnified by pre-existing productive knowledge

    Local financial development and constraints on domestic private-firm exports: Evidence from city commercial banks in China

    International audienceWe show that the development of city commercial banks (CCBs) across China has alleviated the constraints from China’s domestic financial-market inefficiency on the export activity of domestic private firms. Considering the export behavior of 260 cities between 1997 and 2012, we confirm the well-established under-performance of domestic private firms in financially more vulnerable sectors compared to foreign affiliates in China. We show that a greater number of CCB branches raises domestic private-firm exports disproportionately more in financially-dependent sectors, which is in line with improved financing conditions for these companies. This improvement in export performance appears to result from both an increase in the number of destination countries and a decline in prices. CCB development is moreover associated with a reduction in the systematic disadvantage of domestic private firms relative to foreign-owned firms in export markets resulting from their greater financial exclusion. We, however, also find that private-firm export performance has deteriorated relative to that of state-owned firms, casting doubt on the ability of CCBs to end the systematic bias of lending in favor of the state sector

    Zircon U–Pb chronology, geochemistry, and petrogenesis of the high Nb–Ta alkaline rhyolites at the Tuohe Tree Farm, northern Volcanic Belt, Great Xing’an Range, China

    We studied newly found high Nb–Ta alkaline rhyolites in the northern volcanic belt of the Great Xing’an Range, China. The LA–ICP–MS U–Pb weighted mean age is 114.07 ± 0.55 Ma, indicating that the rocks formed during the late Early Cretaceous and were the product of the late eruption of a Mesozoic volcano. The major element contents are characterized by high Si, rich K, low Fe, and poor Ca and Mg. In the total alkaline–silicon diagram, the sample points are in the alkaline rhyolite region. Meanwhile, rare earth elements show obvious Ce/Ce* positive anomalies and Eu/Eu* negative anomalies. In addition, trace elements are characterized by high Nb, Ta, and Yb, and low Sr. The two-stage Nd isotopic model age T2DM of the depleted mantle is between 799–813 Ma, indicating that the diagenetic material originated from the depleted mantle or partial melting of newly formed young crustal materials. The source rocks melted at a relative shallow depth (<30 km), under lower pressure (<0.5 Gpa) and high oxygen fugacity; moreover, the residues in the source region were Ca-rich mafic plagioclase + amphibole + orthopyroxene. In the Nb–Y–3Ga and Nb–Y–Ce diagrams, the sample points are in the A1 type region. It can be concluded that the mantle-derived basaltic magma underplated and supplied the heat sources for partial melting of the metamorphic crustal rocks in an intraplate extensional tectonic environment related to a rift, mantle plume, and hot spot.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
