    Hybridized surface plasmon polaritons at an interface between a metal and a uniaxial crystal

    The surface plasmonpolariton (SPP) at an interface between a metal and a uniaxial crystal is studied. A new class of hybridized SPP found in this work is quite different from the traditional SPP at the interface between a metal and an isotropic dielectric. In contrast to the two evanescent fields for the traditional SPP, the hybridized SPP involves four evanescent fields: transverse-electric-like and transverse-magnetic-like waves in the metal, and ordinary-light-like and extraordinary-light-like waves in the uniaxial crystal. The necessary conditions and the regimes for the existence of the hybridized SPP are presented.     Resource Abundance and Economic Growth in China

    This paper studies the resource curse phenomenon in China. The “resource curse” is an important claim that the resource-abundant economies grow at a slower pace than the resource-scarce economies do. There are many recent studies that analyze the resource curse phenomenon theoretically and empirically. However, few papers analyze which socio-economic variables determine the resource curse. This paper is di erent from the previous studies in three aspects: (i) The city-level data is used; (ii) Using the functional coecient regression model we can take care of city-specific heterogeneity and, at the same time, analyze the transmission mechanism of the curse of recourses; (iii)We construct a variable to estimate the e ect of the di usion processes of the natural resources among cities in the same province. Our empirical results show that there is no evidence to support the statement of resource curse in China. On the other hand, the level of natural resources in a city imposes a significant positive di usion e ect on the economic growth of neighbor city within the same province

    This paper revisits the resource curse phenomenon in China and differs from the previous studies in four respects: (i)City-level data isused; (ii)A spatial variable I sconstructed to estimate the diffusion effect of natural resources among cities in the same province; (iii)The impact of resource abundance on economic development is investigated not only at the city level but also at the prefectural level in China; (iv) We use a functional coefficient regression model to deal with city-specific heterogeneity and, at the same time, analyze the transmission mechanism of the resource curse phenomenon.Our empirical results show that there is no signifficant evidence to support the existence of a resource curse phenomenon inChina.On the other hand, we find that the degree of natural resource abundance in a city has a positive diffusion effect on the economic growth of neighboring cities within the same province at the city level, but not at prefectural levels.     Perceived chronic social adversity and cyberbullying perpetration among adolescents: the mediating role of rumination and moderating role of mindfulness

    BackgroundsThe prevalence of cyberbullying has brought about many adverse effects on adolescents’ mental health. Although current studies have shown that perceived chronic social adversity (PCSA) is closely related to cyberbullying perpetration among adolescents, the underlying mechanism of the relationship between the two remains relatively unclear. This study investigated the association of PCSA, rumination, mindfulness, and cyberbullying perpetration among adolescents, building upon the general strain theory, the general aggressive model, and the limited resource of self-control theory.MethodsA sample of 477 Chinese high school students (Mage = 15.84 years, SDage = 0.67, 49.69% female) completed the Perceived Chronic Social Adversity Questionnaire, the Ruminative Responses Scale, the Child and Adolescent Mindfulness Measure, and the cyberbullying subscale of the Revised Cyber Bullying Inventory. The current study constructed a moderated mediation model to examine the relationship between PCSA and cyberbullying perpetration among adolescents and assessed the mediating role of rumination and the moderating role of mindfulness.ResultsThe results revealed a significant positive correlation between PCSA and cyberbullying perpetration. Rumination mediated the relationship between PCSA and cyberbullying perpetration, whereas mindfulness moderated the latter half of the mediation pathway. Specifically, compared to adolescents with higher mindfulness, the association between rumination and cyberbullying perpetration is greater for adolescents with lower mindfulness.ConclusionThe results further deepen our understanding of the mechanisms linking subjective perception of negative life events and cyberbullying perpetration among adolescents from the interaction of multiple factors, thus providing a basis for future interventions to encourage adolescents to properly cope with social adversity and promote positive mental health to reduce the risk of cyberbullying

    Hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study

    BackgroundMeta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) data showed that the relationship between hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) risk remains under debate. This study is conducted to test the causal relationship of hypothyroidism and RA.MethodsA two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) analysis was employed to estimate the causality of hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis in European ancestry and Asian ancestry. Integrating the effects generated by TSMR, functional annotations and noncoding variant prediction framework were applied to analyze and interpret the functional instrument variants (IVs).ResultsThe results of the inverse variance weighted method showed a strong significant causal relationship between hypothyroidism and risk of RA in European ancestry [odds ratio (OR) = 1.96; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.49, 2.58; p < 0.001]. The outcomes of MR-Egger, weighted median, weighted mode, and simple mode also showed that hypothyroidism was significantly associated with increased risk of RA in European ancestry. The MR-PRESSO method also showed significant results [Outlier-corrected Causal Estimate = 0.70; standard error (SE) = 0.06; p < 0.001]. An independent dataset and an Asian ancestry dataset were applied to estimate and obtain the coincident results. Furthermore, we integrated the effect of variants in TSMR analysis, functional annotations, and prediction methods to pinpoint the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs4409785 as one of the causal variants, which suggested that this variant could impact the binding of CTCF-cohesin and play a vital role in immune cells.ConclusionIn this study, we prove that hypothyroidism is significantly causally associated with increased RA risk, which has not been shown in previous studies.     Mol-Instructions: A Large-Scale Biomolecular Instruction Dataset for Large Language Models

    Large Language Models (LLMs), with their remarkable task-handling capabilities and innovative outputs, have catalyzed significant advancements across a spectrum of fields. However, their proficiency within specialized domains such as biomolecular studies remains limited. To address this challenge, we introduce Mol-Instructions, a meticulously curated, comprehensive instruction dataset expressly designed for the biomolecular realm. Mol-Instructions is composed of three pivotal components: molecule-oriented instructions, protein-oriented instructions, and biomolecular text instructions, each curated to enhance the understanding and prediction capabilities of LLMs concerning biomolecular features and behaviors. Through extensive instruction tuning experiments on the representative LLM, we underscore the potency of Mol-Instructions to enhance the adaptability and cognitive acuity of large models within the complex sphere of biomolecular studies, thereby promoting advancements in the biomolecular research community.     Integrated gene-based and pathway analyses using UK Biobank data identify novel genes for chronic respiratory diseases

    BackgroundChronic respiratory diseases have become a non-negligible cause of death globally. Although smoking and environmental exposures are primary risk factors for chronic respiratory diseases, genetic factors also play an important role in determining individual’s susceptibility to diseases. Here we performed integrated gene-based and pathway analyses to systematically illuminate the heritable characteristics of chronic respiratory diseases.MethodsUK (United Kingdom) Biobank is a very large, population-based prospective study with over 500,000 participants, established to allow detailed investigations of the genetic and nongenetic determinants of the diseases. Utilizing the GWAS-summarized data downloaded from UK Biobank, we conducted gene-based analysis to obtain associations of susceptibility genes with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia using FUSION and MAGMA software. Across the identified susceptibility regions, functional annotation integrating multiple functional data sources was performed to explore potential regulatory mechanisms with INQUISIT algorithm. To further detect the biological process involved in the development of chronic respiratory diseases, we undertook pathway enrichment analysis with the R package (clusterProfiler).ResultsA total of 195 susceptibility genes were identified significantly associated with chronic respiratory diseases (Pbonferroni < 0.05), and 24/195 located out of known susceptibility regions (e.g. WDPCP in 2p15). Within the identified susceptibility regions, functional annotation revealed an aggregation of credible variants in promoter-like and enhancer-like histone modification regions and such regulatory mechanisms were specific to lung tissues. Furthermore, 110 genes with INQUISIT score ≥1 may influence diseases susceptibility through exerting effects on coding sequences, proximal promoter and distal enhancer regulations. Pathway enrichment results showed that these genes were enriched in immune-related processes and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors pathways.ConclusionsThis study implemented an integrated gene-based and pathway strategy to explore the underlying biological mechanisms and our findings may serve as promising targets for future clinical treatments of chronic respiratory diseases

    FBXO38 regulates ocular melanoma proliferation through the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway

    Objective·To investigate the effect of F-box only protein 38 (FBXO38) on the ocular melanoma proliferation and the potential regulatory pathway.Methods·Human skin cutaneous melanoma A375 and human uveal melanoma OMM2.3 cell lines with FBXO38 knockdown and overexpression were constructed by FBXO38 short hairpin RNA (shRNA) and FBXO38 overexpression plasmids respectively. Knockdown and overexpression efficiency of FBXO38 at transcription and protein levels were verified by using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting. The effects of FBXO38 on melanoma cell proliferation were detected through clonal formation assay, BrdU immunofluorescence staining and CCK8 cell proliferation assay. By using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, differentially expressed genes were analyzed in the high and low expression groups of FBXO38. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment was performed to reveal the signaling pathways associated with FBXO38. CCK8 cell proliferation assay was used to detect the inhibition rates of the signaling pathway inhibitors on cells with different FBXO38 expression levels. qRT-PCR and Western blotting were used to detect whether the signaling pathway was activated after knocking down FBXO38.Results·qRT-PCR and Western blotting verified that mRNA and protein expression levels of FBXO38 in FBXO38 knockdown A375 and OMM2.3 cell lines decreased compared with the control group, while the expression levels of FBXO38 in the overexpression cell lines increased compared with wild type group (P<0.05). Clonal formation assay, BrdU immunofluorescence staining and CCK8 cell proliferation assay showed that FBXO38 knockdown significantly enhanced the proliferation of A375 and OMM2.3 cells (P<0.05), while overexpression of FBXO38 inhibited melanoma cell proliferation (P<0.05). Enrichment analysis showed that in skin cutaneous melanoma and uveal melanoma, FBXO38 expression influenced the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K-Akt) pathway activation. Compared with those in the control group, the inhibition rates of PI3K inhibitor LY294002 and mTOR1 inhibitor Everolimus in the FBXO38 knockdown group significantly improved (P<0.05), while their inhibition rates of the overexpression group significantly decreased compared with those of control cells (P<0.05). Western blotting results showed that after knocking down FBXO38, expression levels of PTEN, P21 and P53 proteins decreased, while expression level of MDM2 protein increased. The qRT-PCR results showed a significant decrease in P53 transcription level (P<0.05) and a significant increase in MDM2 transcription level in FBXO38 knockdown cells (P<0.05).Conclusion·FBXO38 plays a role in regulating the proliferation of ocular melanoma, and this regulatory effect is related to the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway
