Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) interaction with 3' ends of Japanese encephalitis virus RNA and colocalization with the viral NS5 protein
Replication of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) genome depends on host factors for successfully completing their life cycles; to do this, host factors have been recruited and/or relocated to the site of viral replication. Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), a cellular metabolic protein, was found to colocalize with viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (NS5) in JEV-infected cells. Subcellular fractionation further indicated that GAPDH remained relatively constant in the cytosol, while increasing at 12 to 24 hours postinfection (hpi) and decreasing at 36 hpi in the nuclear fraction of infected cells. In contrast, the redistribution patterns of GAPDH were not observed in the uninfected cells. Co-immunoprecipitation of GAPDH and JEV NS5 protein revealed no direct protein-protein interaction; instead, GAPDH binds to the 3' termini of plus- and minus-strand RNAs of JEV by electrophoretic mobility shift assays. Accordingly, GAPDH binds to the minus strand more efficiently than to the plus strand of JEV RNAs. This study highlights the findings that infection of JEV changes subcellular localization of GAPDH suggesting that this metabolic enzyme may play a role in JEV replication
Hydrogen Storage in Iron/Carbon Nanopowder Composite Materials: Effect of Varying Spiked Iron Content on Hydrogen Adsorption
This study investigates the effects of varying the spiked iron content of iron/carbon nanopowder (Fe/CNP) composite materials on hydrogen storage capacity. Among four such samples, a maximum hydrogen uptake of approximately 0.48 wt% was obtained with 14 wt% of spiked iron under 37 atm and 300 K. This higher hydrogen uptake capacity was believed to be closely related to the physisorption mechanism rather than chemisorption. In this case, the formation of maghemite catalyzed the attraction of hydrogen molecules and the CNP skeleton was the principal absorbent material for hydrogen storage. However, as the iron content exceeded 14 wt%, the formation of larger and poorly dispersed maghemite grains reduced the available surface areas of CNP for the storage of hydrogen molecules, leading to decreased uptake. Our study shows that hydrogen uptake capacities can be improved by appropriately adjusting the surface polarities of the CNP with well dispersed iron oxides crystals
Psoas muscle area is an independent survival prognosticator in patients undergoing surgery for long-bone metastases
Background: Predictive analytics is gaining popularity as an aid to treatment planning for patients with bone metastases, whose expected survival should be considered. Decreased psoas muscle area (PMA), a morphometric indicator of suboptimal nutritional status, has been associated with mortality in various cancers, but never been integrated into current survival prediction algorithms (SPA) for patients with skeletal metastases. This study investigates whether decreased PMA predicts worse survival in patients with extremity metastases and whether incorporating PMA into three modern SPAs (PATHFx, SORG-NG, and SORG-MLA) improves their performance. Methods: One hundred eighty-five patients surgically treated for long-bone metastases between 2014 and 2019 were divided into three PMA tertiles (small, medium, and large) based on their psoas size on CT. Kaplan–Meier, multivariable regression, and Cox proportional hazards analyses were employed to compare survival between tertiles and examine factors associated with mortality. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess whether incorporating adjusted PMA values enhanced the three SPAs' discriminatory abilities. The clinical utility of incorporating PMA into these SPAs was evaluated by decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: Patients with small PMA had worse 90-day and 1-year survival after surgery (log-rank test p 0.5 after the addition of adjusted PMA to these SPAs. Conclusions: Decreased PMA on CT is associated with worse survival in surgically treated patients with extremity metastases, even after controlling for three contemporary SPAs. Physicians should consider the additional prognostic value of PMA on survival in patients undergoing consideration for operative management due to extremity metastases
Computer-aided Diagnosis of Breast Elastography
Ultrasonography has been an important imaging technique for detecting breast tumors. As opposed tothe conventional B-mode image, the real-time tissue elastography by ultrasound is a new technique for imagingthe elasticity and applied to detect the stiffness of tissues. The red region of color elastography indicatesthe soft tissue and the blue one indicates the hard tissue. The harder tissue usually is classified as malignancy.In this paper, the authors proposed a computer-aided diagnosis( CAD) system on elastography tomeasure whether this system is effective and accurate to classify the tumor into benign and malignant. Accordingto the features of elasticity, the color elastography was transferred to hue, saturation, and value(HSV) color space and extracted meaningful features from hue images. Then the neural network was utilizedin multiple features to distinguish tumors. In this experiment, there are 180 pathology-proven cases including113 benign and 67 malignant cases used to examine the classification. The results of the proposedsystem showed an accuracy of 83.89 %, a sensitivity of 82.09 % and a specificity of 84.96 %. Compared withthe physician\u27s diagnosis, an accuracy of 78.33 %, a sensitivity of 53.73 % and a specificity of 92.92 %, theproposed CAD system had better performance. Moreover, the agreement of the proposed CAD system andthe physician\u27s diagnosis was calculated by kappa statistics, the kappa 0.64 indicated there is a fair agreementof observers
Women with endometriosis have higher comorbidities: Analysis of domestic data in Taiwan
AbstractEndometriosis, defined by the presence of viable extrauterine endometrial glands and stroma, can grow or bleed cyclically, and possesses characteristics including a destructive, invasive, and metastatic nature. Since endometriosis may result in pelvic inflammation, adhesion, chronic pain, and infertility, and can progress to biologically malignant tumors, it is a long-term major health issue in women of reproductive age. In this review, we analyze the Taiwan domestic research addressing associations between endometriosis and other diseases. Concerning malignant tumors, we identified four studies on the links between endometriosis and ovarian cancer, one on breast cancer, two on endometrial cancer, one on colorectal cancer, and one on other malignancies, as well as one on associations between endometriosis and irritable bowel syndrome, one on links with migraine headache, three on links with pelvic inflammatory diseases, four on links with infertility, four on links with obesity, four on links with chronic liver disease, four on links with rheumatoid arthritis, four on links with chronic renal disease, five on links with diabetes mellitus, and five on links with cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc.). The data available to date support that women with endometriosis might be at risk of some chronic illnesses and certain malignancies, although we consider the evidence for some comorbidities to be of low quality, for example, the association between colon cancer and adenomyosis/endometriosis. We still believe that the risk of comorbidity might be higher in women with endometriosis than that we supposed before. More research is needed to determine whether women with endometriosis are really at risk of these comorbidities
SEGMENTATION OF BREAST TUMOR IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL ULTRASOUND IMAGES USING THREE-DIMENSIONAL DISCRETE ACTIVE CONTOUR MODEL
In this paper, we apply the three-dimensional (3-D) active contour model to a 3-D ultrasonic data file
for segmenting of the breast tumor. The 3-D ultrasonic file is composed of a series of two-dimensional (2-D)
images. Most of traditional techniques of 2-D image segmentation will not use the information between adjacent
images. To suit the property of the 3-D data, we introduce the concept of the 3-D stick, the 3-D morphologic
process and the 3-D active contour model. The 3-D stick can get over the problem that the ultrasonic image is
full of speckle noise and highlight the edge information in images. The 3-D morphologic process helps to
determine the contour of the tumor and the resulting contour can be regarded as the initial contour of the active
contour model. Finally, the 3-D active contour model will make the initial contour approach to the real contour
of the tumor. However, there is emphasis on these 3-D techniques that they do not consist of a series of 2-D
techniques. When they work, they will consider the horizontal, vertical and depth directions at the same time. The
use of these 3-D techniques not only segments the 3-D shape but also obtains the volume of the tumor. The volume
of the tumor calculated by the proposed method will be compared with the volume calculated by the VOCAL TM
software with the physician’s manually drawn shape and it shows that the performance of our method is

Image retrieval on uncompressed and compressed domains
With the rapid growth of Internet and multimedia system,
digital images have been enormously used in many
applications now. The way of how to retrieve the image
we want from a large image database correctly plays a
more important role. Currently, most proposed methods
for image retrieval can only be applied with images in the
same representing domain. In this paper, we propose a
novel methodology that extracts the feature image directly
from its original domain without any decompressing
procedures. The feature is further modified to achieve the
rotation-invariant and scaling property. Our proposed
method can be used for image retrieval on the three most
frequently adopted types of images nowadays: spatial,
DCT compressed, and wavelet-compressed images.
Experimental results show that our proposed method is
quite effective not only for the performance but also is not
afraid of scale and rotation
