Automatic Analysis of Applications for Portability Across Linux Distributions

Problems with portability of applications across various Linux distributions is one of the major sore spots of independent software vendors (ISVs) wishing to support the Linux platform in their products. The source of the problem is that different distributions have different sets of system libraries that vary in the interfaces (APIs) provided, with respect to both composition and behavior. And the critical questions arise such as "which distributions my application would run on" or "what can I specifically do to make my application run on a greater number of distributions". This article presents an approach and the Linux Application Checker tool that help to answer such questions by automatically analyzing the target application and confronting collected data with the internal knowledge base containing information about the various real world distributions. Additionally, Linux Application Checker is an official tool approved by the Linux Foundation for certifying applications for compliance with the Linux Standard Base (LSB) standard, the leading effort for the "single Linux specification"

Polarisation and wavelength selective transmission through nanohole structures with multiple grating geometry

Excitation and localization of surface plasmon polariton modes in metal-dielectric structures can be utilized to construct nanophotonic materials and devices with tuneable optical dispersion. We present a selective polariton generator (SPG) device that demonstrates switching of light transmission based on surface plasmon antennae principles. This polarization-sensitive structure selectively generates and transports polaritons of a desired wavelength through subwavelength apertures. Two of these SPGs have been combined around a nanohole into a new, single device that allows polarization and wavelength selective switching of transmission. The multi-state operation is confirmed by experiment results

Системна цілісність рівнів політичного знання та рівнів аналізу політичних проблем

На прикладі дослідження специфічних особливостей політичного аналізу як політико-управлінської наукової дисципліни, здійснена спроба обґрунтування її ціннісної основи, яка ще не знайшла свого адекватного відображення в сучасному політологічному дискурсі. Доводиться, що ціннісно-світоглядне ядро сучасної політичної науки є таким же фундаментальним її параметром, необхідним для побудови теорії, як і емпіричне знання, а тому є всі підстави для перегляду традиційної концепції дворівневої структури політологічного знання, що фіксує тільки його емпіричний і теоретичний рівні. In article, on example of studying of specific features of political analysis as politically administrative scientific discipline, a rational attempt of its value basis was made, which for the present didn't find an adequate reflection in modern politological discourse. It is proved that valuable world outlook kernel of modern political science is both its fundamental parameter necessary for theory creation, and empirical knowledge and therefore there are all bases to revise a traditional concept to two-level structure of politological knowledge which fixes only their empirical and theoretical levels

The impact of international financial reporting standards on fund performance

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of international financial reporting standards (IFRS) on the performance of UK investment closed-end trust funds with domestic equity focus using Carhart’s Four-Factor model. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on the Efficient Market Hypothesis, which argues that all available information is already included in the price of assets, and therefore, investors cannot beat the market or generate abnormal returns. Findings The results show that on average, UK investment trusts neither do generate abnormal returns, nor is their performance persistent. This paper provides empirical evidence to support the efficient market hypotheses and provides proof that the adoption of IFRS has, on average, a decreasing impact on the excess returns generated by UK investment trusts. Originality/value The findings of this paper have business policy implications for investment trust in the UK

In this communication we present our response to the recent comment of A. Engel regarding our paper on FIB- fabricated Nb nanowires (see Vol. 20 (2009) Pag. 465302). After further analysis and additional experimental evidence, we conclude that our interpretation of the experimental results in light of QPS theory is still valid when compared with the alternative proximity-based model as proposed by A.
