Abstract
PURPOSE:
To determine reciprocal and synergistic effects of acute intracranial hypertension and ARDS on neuronal and pulmonary damage and to define possible mechanisms.
METHODS:
Twenty-eight mechanically ventilated pigs were randomized to four groups of seven each: control; acute intracranial hypertension (AICH); acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS); acute respiratory distress syndrome in combination with acute intracranial hypertension (ARDS + AICH). AICH was induced with an intracranial balloon catheter and the inflation volume was adjusted to keep intracranial pressure (ICP) at 30-40 cmH2O. ARDS was induced by oleic acid infusion. Respiratory function, hemodynamics, extravascular lung water index (ELWI), lung and brain computed tomography (CT) scans, as well as inflammatory mediators, S100B, and neuronal serum enolase (NSE) were measured over a 4-h period. Lung and brain tissue were collected and examined at the end of the experiment.
RESULTS:
In both healthy and injured lungs, AICH caused increases in NSE and TNF-alpha plasma concentrations, extravascular lung water, and lung density in CT, the extent of poorly aerated (dystelectatic) and atelectatic lung regions, and an increase in the brain tissue water content. ARDS and AICH in combination induced damage in the hippocampus and decreased density in brain CT.
CONCLUSIONS:
AICH induces lung injury and also exacerbates pre-existing damage. Increased extravascular lung water is an early marker. ARDS has a detrimental effect on the brain and acts synergistically with intracranial hypertension to cause histological hippocampal damage

The slope of the stroke work (SW)-pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) relation may be negative in congestive heart failure (CHF), implying decreased contractility based on the premise that PCWP is simply related to left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic volume. We hypothesized that the negative slope is explained by decreased transmural LV end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP), despite the increased LVEDP, and that contractility remains unchanged. Rapid pacing produced CHF in six dogs. Hemodynamic and dimension changes were then measured under anesthesia during volume manipulation. Volume loading increased pericardial pressure and LVEDP but decreased transmural LVEDP and SW. Right ventricular diameter increased and septum-to-LV free wall diameter decreased. Although the slopes of the SW-LVEDP relations were negative, the SW-transmural LVEDP relations remained positive, indicating unchanged contractility. Similarly, the SW-segment length relations suggested unchanged contractility. Pressure surrounding the LV must be subtracted from LVEDP to calculate transmural LVEDP accurately. When this was done in this model, the apparent decrease in contractility was no longer evident. Despite the increased LVEDP during volume loading, transmural LVEDP and therefore SW decreased and contractility remained unchanged

The Higgs boson was postulated nearly five decades ago within the framework of the standard model of particle physics and has been the subject of numerous searches at accelerators around the world. Its discovery would verify the existence of a complex scalar field thought to give mass to three of the carriers of the electroweak force-the W+, W-, and Z 0 bosons-as well as to the fundamental quarks and leptons. The CMS Collaboration has observed, with a statistical significance of five standard deviations, a new particle produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The evidence is strongest in the diphoton and four-lepton (electrons and/or muons) final states, which provide the best mass resolution in the CMS detector. The probability of the observed signal being due to a random fluctuation of the background is about 1 in 3 x 106. The new particle is a boson with spin not equal to 1 and has a mass of about 1.25 giga-electron volts. Although its measured properties are, within the uncertainties of the present data, consistent with those expected of the Higgs boson, more data are needed to elucidate the precise nature of the new particle
