    Magnetically‐actuated microcages for cells entrapment, fabricated by laser direct writing via two photon polymerization

    The manipulation of biological materials at cellular level constitutes a sine qua non and provocative research area regarding the development of micro/nano‐medicine. In this study, we report on 3D superparamagnetic microcage‐like structures that, in conjunction with an externally applied static magnetic field, were highly efficient in entrapping cells. The microcage‐like structures were fabricated using Laser Direct Writing via Two‐Photon Polymerization (LDW via TPP) of IP‐L780 biocompatible photopolymer/iron oxide superparamagnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) composite. The unique properties of LDW via TPP technique enabled the reproduction of the complex architecture of the 3D structures, with a very high accuracy i.e., about 90 nm lateral resolution. 3D hyperspectral microscopy was employed to investigate the structural and compositional characteristics of the microcage‐like structures. Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X‐Ray Spectroscopy was used to prove the unique features regarding the morphology and the functionality of the 3D structures seeded with MG‐63 osteoblast‐like cells. Comparative studies were made on microcage‐like structures made of IP‐L780 photopolymer alone (i.e., without superparamagnetic properties). We found that the cell‐seeded structures made by IP‐L780/MNPs composite actuated by static magnetic fields of 1.3 T were 13.66 ± 5.11 folds (p < 0.01) more efficient in terms of cells entrapment than the structures made by IP‐L780 photopolymer alone (i.e., that could not be actuated magnetically). The unique 3D architecture of the microcage‐like superparamagnetic structures and their actuation by external static magnetic fields acted in synergy for entrapping osteoblast‐like cells, showing a significant potential for bone tissue engineering applications

    Depression and breast cancer; postoperative short-term implications

    Introduction. Pre and postoperative psychological status is an important aspect in patients diagnosed with breast cancer, having a great impact on their quality of life. Considering the high incidence, mortality rate, and the added effect on self-image, breast cancer is considered a major stressor for women worldwide, almost 50% of these experiencing psychological distress. Methods. Our study retrospectively analysed the relationship between preoperative diagnosed depression and the number of medical care days, on patients diagnosed with breast cancer and admitted for surgical treatment in Colțea Clinical Hospital between 2017 and 2018. Results. We had 62 patients scheduled for breast cancer surgery, who had been preoperatively evaluated using psychological tests. Of those patients, 18 had scores indicating significant symptoms of depression (moderate or severe symptoms, HDSR \u3e17). Patients with high HDSR scores needed an 18.4% longer hospitalization than patients without symptoms of depression. They also had 35.4% more ambulatory visits in the month following discharge, and a higher incidence of postoperative complications. Conclusions. There seem to be both physiological and somatic determinants responsible for the need of prolonged medical care, but the mechanisms responsible for these effects remain unclear. Identifying high-risk patients could not only lower the postoperative morbidity, but also increase the therapeutic outcomes

The most aggressive type of skin cancer, melanoma, is discussed from the point of view of incidence, molecular, and immunohistochemical mechanism along with the most important biomarkers for identification. Recent studies containing active phytocompounds with chemopreventive activity pointing toward phytochemicals used for melanoma prevention and therapy are reviewed. Modern physicochemical formulations for the enhancement of bioavailability of some active phytochemicals with chemopreventive activity for malignant melanoma are discussed

    CORRELATION BETWEEN THE METABOLIC SYNDROME AND DEPRESSION IN REGARD OF POLYPATHOLOGY AND SPIRITUAL VIEW

    Abstract Any disease can be regarded as a result of the influence of external factors, but also as a spiritual imbalance of the human being. The link between the metabolic syndrome and depression on the basis of this presumption was studied, considering the fact that the imbalance of the so called ‚matter" may have the origin in a spiritual imbalance and vice versa. In order to study the correlation between metabolic syndrome-depression, 66 patients with metabolic syndrome were chosen, to whom there were applied questionnaires for depression. The patients were selected during January 2012 and May 2012 in the V th Internal Medicine and Geriatrics-Gerontology Clinic, from the Railway Hospital Iasi. The preliminary data showed that depression (of different degrees) was associated to the 56 out of the 66 patients with metabolic syndrome (84.84%). The obese patients were the most affected suggesting the important part of the negative feelings (of unacceptance and self-rejection) played in their case. The ways of helping patients with these associated pathologies require a very complex approach, based on a interdisciplinary thinking and acting. Different medical specialists are needed, as well as a psychologist and even a father confessor, because cultivating Christian virtues will help patients fight stress, increase faith and love. Continuous prayer will balance their inner world, recreating it in health, peace and harmony

    Cortisol and Oxytocin Could Predict Covert Aggression in Some Psychotic Patients

    Background: The covert or indirect type of aggression has a risk of converting in violent acts and, considering that, it is very important to identify it in order to apply effective preventive measures. In cases of psychotic patients, the risk of becoming violent is harder to predict, as even neuter stimuli may be perceived as threat and trigger aggression. Treating all the psychiatric patients as potential aggressive subjects is not the best preventive measure as only a few of them are aggressive and this measure may further enhance the stigma on mentally ill patients. There is a current need for better understanding of covert aggression and to find objective measures, such as biological markers, that could be indicative of potential violent behavior. In this work, we try to investigate the role of cortisol and oxytocin as potential biomarkers of aggression in patients with psychosis. Material and Methods: We analyzed the level of peripheral oxytocin (pg/mL) and cortisol level (ng/mL) in 28 psychotic patients (they were not on psychotropic treatment at the moment of admission and those with substance abuse or personality disorder were excluded from the study) and correlated it with the intensity of aggression reported by the patient (overt and covert type) using the Overt Covert Aggression Inventory and the level of observed aggression of the patient in the past 7 days (rated by the health care provider) using the Modified Overt Aggression Scale. Results: We found that psychotic patients with a higher level of covert aggression had a lower level of cortisol (61.05 ± 8.04 ng/mL vs. 216.33 ± 12.6.9 ng/mL, p ˂ 0.01) and a higher level of oxytocin (102.87 ± 39.26 vs. 70.01 ± 25.07, p = 0.01) when compared with patients with a lower level of covert aggression. Furthermore, we observed significant negative correlation between cortisol and covert aggression (r = −0.676, p < 0.001) and between oxytocin and covert type of aggression (r = 0.382, p = 0.04). Moreover, we found that a lower level of cortisol together with a higher level of oxytocin are significant predictors of a style of internalized manifestation of aggression, with the predictive model explaining 55% of the variant of the internalized manifestation of aggression (F (2.25) = 17.6, p < 0.001, β = 0.35, R2 = 55.2). We did not find significant correlations between cortisol and overt aggression, and neither between oxytocin and overt aggression. Positive correlations were also found between the overt type of self-reported aggression and overt aggression reported by the rater (r = 0.459, p = 0.01). Conclusions: The importance of a predictive model in understanding covert aggression is imperative and the results of our study show that oxytocin and cortisol warrant to be further investigated in establishing a definitive predictive model for covert aggression

    Anatomical localization of intracranial grade II meningiomas in North-Eastern Romania: Our 25-years experience

    Objective.&nbsp;Our research aims to assess a possible connection between tumour localization and histological subtypes of grade II meningiomas. Material and methods. 143 patients with grade II WHO meningiomas underwent surgical resection in "Prof. Dr. N. Oblu" Emergency Clinical Hospital Ia?i between 1990 and 2015. The collected data included: patient age, gender, tumour localization and histopathological diagnosis (atypical, clear cells and chordoid meningioma). Results. 135 (94.4%) of all 143 patients with grade II meningiomas were atypical meningiomas, 6 (4.2%) were cell clear meningiomas and only 2 (1.4%) were chordoid meningiomas. As concerns their distribution by gender, 79 (55.2%) were female and 64 (44.8%) were male. Grade II meningiomas were most commonly located at convexity 49.7% (n=71), followed by skull base in 30.8% (n=44) of the cases and parasagittal/falcine in 14.7% (n=21) of the patients. Conclusions. The most common localization of grade II meningiomas was convexity, followed by skull base, parasagittal/falcine and intraventricular areas. We have also noticed that convexity meningiomas are more frequent in women, unlike the other anatomical localizations in which the male-female ratio is almost equal. Therefore, further research is necessary to determine the role of embryological, anatomopathological and genetic factors in underlying the connection between meningioma grade and anatomical localization
