Hsp70 in mitochondrial biogenesis
The family of hsp70 (70 kilodalton heat shock protein) molecular chaperones plays an essential and diverse role in cellular physiology, Hsp70 proteins appear to elicit their effects by interacting with polypeptides that present domains which exhibit non-native conformations at distinct stages during their life in the cell. In this paper we review work pertaining to the functions of hsp70 proteins in chaperoning mitochondrial protein biogenesis. Hsp70 proteins function in protein synthesis, protein translocation across mitochondrial membranes, protein folding and finally the delivery of misfolded proteins to proteolytic enzymes in the mitochondrial matrix
Exploring the stability of super heavy elements: First measurement of the fission barrier of 254No
The gamma-ray multiplicity and total energy emitted by the heavy nucleus 254No have been measured at 2 different beam energies. From these measurements, the initial distributions of spin I and excitation energy E * of 254No were constructed. The distributions display a saturation in excitation energy, which allows a direct determination of the fission barrier. 254No is the heaviest shell-stabilized nucleus with a measured fission barrier. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014
Fission barrier of superheavy nuclei and persistence of shell effects at high spin: Cases of No 254 and Th 220
We report on the first measurement of the fission barrier height in a heavy shell-stabilized nucleus. The fission barrier height of No254 is measured to be Bf=6.0±0.5 MeV at spin 15 and, by extrapolation, Bf=6.6±0.9 MeV at spin 0. This information is deduced from the measured distribution of entry points in the excitation energy versus spin plane. The same measurement is performed for Th220 and only a lower limit of the fission barrier height can be determined: Bf(I)>8 MeV. Comparisons with theoretical fission barriers test theories that predict properties of superheavy elements

Early carboniferous brachiopod faunas from the Baoshan block, west Yunnan, southwest China
38 brachiopod species in 27 genera and subgenera are described from the Yudong Formation in the Shidian-Baoshan area, west Yunnan, southwest China. New taxa include two new subgenera: Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) and Brachythyrina (Longathyrina), and seven new species: Eomarginifera yunnanensis, Marginatia cylindrica, Unispirifer (Unispirifer) xiangshanensis, Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) wafangjieensis, Brachythyrina (Brachythyrina) transversa, Brachythyrina (Longathyrina) baoshanensis, and Girtyella wafangjieensis. Based on the described material and constraints from associated coral and conodont faunas, the age of the brachiopod fauna from the Yudon Formation is considered late Tournaisian (Early Carboniferous), with a possibility extending into earlyViseacutean.<br /
Chromosomal location of human genes encoding major heat-shock protein HSP70
The HSP70 family of heat-shock proteins constitutes the major proteins synthesized in response to elevated temperatures and other forms of stress. In eukaryotes members of the HSP70 family also include a protein similar if not identical to bovine brain uncoating ATPase and glucose-regulated proteins. An intriguing relation has been established between expression of heat-shock proteins and transformation in mammalian cells. Elevated levels of HSP70 are found in some transformed cell lines, and viral and cellular gene products that are capable of transforming cells in vitro can also stimulate transcription of HSP70 genes. To determine the organization of this complex multigene family in the human genome, we used complementary approaches: Southern analysis and protein gels of Chinese hamster-human somatic cell hybrids, and in situ hybridization to human chromosomes. We demonstrate that functional genes encoding HSP70 proteins map to human chromosomes 6, 14, 21, and at least one other chromosome .Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45535/1/11188_2005_Article_BF01534692.pd
