    Refined Holonomic Summation Algorithms in Particle Physics

    An improved multi-summation approach is introduced and discussed that enables one to simultaneously handle indefinite nested sums and products in the setting of difference rings and holonomic sequences. Relevant mathematics is reviewed and the underlying advanced difference ring machinery is elaborated upon. The flexibility of this new toolbox contributed substantially to evaluating complicated multi-sums coming from particle physics. Illustrative examples of the functionality of the new software package RhoSum are given.Comment: Modified Proposition 2.1 and Corollary 2.

    Holographic Renormalisation and the Electroweak Precision Parameters

    We study the effects of holographic renormalisation on an AdS/QCD inspired description of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Our model is a 5D slice of AdS_5 geometry containing a bulk scalar and SU(2) times SU(2) gauge fields. The scalar field obtains a VEV which represents a condensate that triggers electroweak symmetry breaking. Fermion fields are constrained to live on the UV brane and do not propagate in the bulk. The two-point functions are holographically renormalised through the addition of boundary counterterms. Measurable quantities are then expressed in terms of well defined physical parameters, free from any spurious dependence on the UV cut-off. A complete study of the precision parameters is carried out and bounds on physical quantities derived. The large-N scaling of results is discussed

    Positive expressive writing as a tool for alleviating burnout and enhancing wellbeing in teachers and other full-time workers

    Teachers are an occupational group particularly prone to suffering from burnout, a condition caused by chronic stress from work overload. Burnout is a risk factor for adverse psychological and physical health, thus it is important to test the efficacy of tools and techniques for alleviating burnout and enhancing job satisfaction. One potentially suitable technique is positive expressive writing. In the present study, we investigated the effects of a positive writing intervention on burnout, job satisfaction, anxiety, perceived stress and self-reported physical symptoms and compared these effects in teachers and other full-time workers.A group of teachers (n = 35) and a group of non-teachers (n = 31) who worked full-time in other professions were randomly allocated to complete either three consecutive days of positive expressive writing, or writing about a more neutral topic, online, 20 minutes per day, for three consecutive days State anxiety declined to a greater extent for participants in the positive writing condition compared to the neutral writing condition. Positive writing also conferred benefits on some aspects of job satisfaction, but not burnout. There were no specific benefits for teachers compared to non-teachers. The present study is the first to observe that positive expressive writing may be a useful technique for enhancing job satisfaction in full-time workers

    Randomised, single-masked non-inferiority trial of femtosecond laser-assisted versus manual phacoemulsification cataract surgery for adults with visually significant cataract : the FACT trial protocol

    The study is supported by a grant from the National Institute for Health (NIHR) Health and Technologies Assessment (HTA) programme (reference 13/04/46). The corneal endothelial cell counter used at the Moorfields St Ann's Hospital site was purchased by a grant from the Special Trustees of Moorfields Eye Hospital (reference ST1503D).Introduction Cataract is one of the leading causes of low vision in the westernised world, and cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed operations. Laser platforms for cataract surgery are now available, the anticipated advantages of which are broad and may include better visual outcomes through greater precision and reproducibility, and improved safety. FACT is a randomised single masked non-inferiority trial to establish whether laser-assisted cataract surgery is as good as or better than standard manual phacoemulsification. Methods and analysis 808 patients aged 18 years and over with visually significant cataract will be randomised to manual phacoemulsification cataract surgery (standard care) or laser-assisted cataract surgery (intervention arm). Outcomes will be measured at 3 and 12 months after surgery. The primary clinical outcome is uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, logMAR) at 3 months in the study eye recorded by an observer masked to the trial group. Secondary outcomes include UDVA at 12 months, corrected distance visual acuity at 3 and 12 months, complications, endothelial cell loss, patient-reported outcome measures and a health economic analysis conforming to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence standards. Ethics and dissemination Research Ethics Committee Approval was obtained on 6 February 2015, ref: 14/LO/1937. Current protocol: v2.0 (08/04/2015).
