Lower large deviations and laws of large numbers for maximal flows through a box in first passage percolation

We consider the standard first passage percolation model in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for $d\geq 2$. We are interested in two quantities, the maximal flow $\tau$ between the lower half and the upper half of the box, and the maximal flow $\phi$ between the top and the bottom of the box. A standard subadditive argument yields the law of large numbers for $\tau$ in rational directions. Kesten and Zhang have proved the law of large numbers for $\tau$ and $\phi$ when the sides of the box are parallel to the coordinate hyperplanes: the two variables grow linearly with the surface $s$ of the basis of the box, with the same deterministic speed. We study the probabilities that the rescaled variables $\tau /s$ and $\phi /s$ are abnormally small. For $\tau$, the box can have any orientation, whereas for $\phi$, we require either that the box is sufficiently flat, or that its sides are parallel to the coordinate hyperplanes. We show that these probabilities decay exponentially fast with $s$, when $s$ grows to infinity. Moreover, we prove an associated large deviation principle of speed $s$ for $\tau /s$ and $\phi /s$, and we improve the conditions required to obtain the law of large numbers for these variables.Comment: 39 pages, 4 figures; improvement of the moment conditions and introduction of new results in the revised versio

Law of large numbers for the maximal flow through tilted cylinders in two-dimensional first passage percolation

Equip the edges of the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with i.i.d. random capacities. We prove a law of large numbers for the maximal flow crossing a rectangle in $\mathbb{R}^2$ when the side lengths of the rectangle go to infinity. The value of the limit depends on the asymptotic behaviour of the ratio of the height of the cylinder over the length of its basis. This law of large numbers extends the law of large numbers obtained by Grimmett and Kesten (1984) for rectangles of particular orientation.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures; minor modification

Benjamin Franklin, 1706-2008 : anatomie d’un tricentenaire transatlantique

Cet article analyse le Tricentenaire de Benjamin Franklin, qui eut lieu de 2006 à 2008. A l’occasion de cette date anniversaire, de nombreux livres furent publiés, des colloques et expositions organisés aux Etats-Unis. Ces travaux et manifestations ont produit un nouveau regard, critique, sur Franklin, père fondateur assez extraordinaire. L’exposition principale est venue à Paris, au cours de l’hiver 2007-2008, clairement dans le cadre d’une volonté de rapprocher les deux pays à la suite des controverses suscitées par la Guerre en Irak. Cette commémoration franco-américaine a eu comme objectif principal de souligner la diplomatie et la collaboration transatlantiques, et non de présenter Franklin sous toutes ses facettes, et de l’intégrer au contexte de son époque dans son pays. Un symposium fut donc organisé à l’Université Paris – Diderot afin de mettre en valeur les travaux scientifiques sur Franklin, français, mais aussi étrangers. Les principales communications sont présentées dans ce dossier.This paper offers reflections on the Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary, which took place from 2006 to 2008. The main exhibition travelled to France (2007-2008), clearly as part of an attempt to patch up relationships between the two countries in the wake of the Iraq war controversy. The main focus in this Franco-American commemoration was on transatlantic diplomacy and collaboration, not really on Franklin in his multiple capacities, in his time and country of birth. The conference organized at Université Paris-Diderot in January 2008 was by contrast a scholarly affair, highlighting work on Franklin conducted by French and foreign specialists. Les statues des confédérés dans l’espace public aux États-Unis : pourra-t-on en finir avec une « mauvaise cause » ?

À la suite des drames de Charleston (17 juin 2015) et de Charlottesville (12 août 2017), une partie de l’opinion états-unienne s’est mise à exiger le retrait des monuments à la gloire des confédérés, érigés pour la plupart au tournant du xxe siècle.
