C3 Deficiency – A Case Report
situação extremamente rara, discutindo a fisiopatologia, apresentação clínica, investigação laboratorial e abordagem
terapêutica
Supernova Remnants in the Magellanic Clouds III: An X-ray Atlas of LMC Supernova Remnants
We have used archival ROSAT data to present X-ray images of thirty-one
supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have
classified these remnants according to their X-ray morphologies, into the
categories of Shell-Type, Diffuse Face, Centrally Brightened, Point-Source
Dominated, and Irregular. We suggest possible causes of the X-ray emission for
each category, and for individual features of some of the SNRs.Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures (9 figure files). To appear in the Supplement

Prevalence of Asthma in a Portuguese Countryside Town:Repercussions on Absenteeism and Self-Concept
Background: Childhood asthma represents an increasing health problem and is the leading cause of hospital admission and absenteeism in children with chronic disease. It also compromises quality of life, eventually contributing to disturbances in self-concept.
Self-concept is a recent and global perspective of “the self” and relates to skills, self-image and self-esteem. Little information is available on this topic
and there are no data from Portuguese countryside towns.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of asthma among all school children in the 5th and 6th grades in a Portuguese countryside town and to establish its possible correlation
with absenteeism and self-concept.
Methods: In April 2002, two questionnaires were administered in the presence of the researcher to a group of 950 children attending different schools.
The children completed the internationally renowned questionnaires: ISAAC and the Self-Concept Scale by Susan Harter.
Results: Our sample (n = 818) had a mean age of 11 years (10-15 years) and a male-to-female ratio of 1/1. The cumulative prevalence of asthma was11.9% and that of active asthma was 8.8 %; 63.9% of asthmatics were male and 36.1 % were female.
The mean age of asthmatics was 11.34 years and 74 % had active symptoms. Comparison of this group of 97 asthmatic children with the remaining children revealed a statistically significant correlation between the presence of asthma and school absenteeism
(global: p = 0.04; gymnastics: 0.05). Regarding the Self-Concept Scale a statistically significant association was found between the presence of asthma and school achievement (p = 0.027), physical
appearance (p = 0.015), behavior (p < 0.000) and self-esteem (p < 0.000). No statistically significant correlations were found in social acceptance (p = 0.289) or athletic competence (p = 0.085). Asthmatic
boys had higher self-concept scores than girls, except in the domain of behavior.
Conclusions: Twelve percent of the population
studied was asthmatic. In asthmatic children, absenteeism was higher and self-concept was lower for almost all domains, except social acceptance and athletic
achievement, probably due to overprotection
Charged Higgs boson contribution to for very large in the two Higgs doublet model with UHE-neutrinos
We study the deep inelastic process
(with an isoscalar nucleon), in the context of the
two Higgs doublet model {\it type two} (2HDM(II)). In particular, we discuss
the contribution to the total cross section of diagrams, in which a charged
Higgs boson is exchanged. We show that for large values of such
contribution for an inclusive dispersion generated through the collision of an
ultrahigh energy tau-neutrino on a target nucleon can reach up to 57% of the
value of the contribution of the exchange diagrams (i.e. can reach up to
57% of the standard model (SM) prediction) and could permit to distinguish
between the SM and the 2HDM(II) predictions at the Pierre Auger Observatory.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Fabry Perot Halpha Observations of the Barred Spiral NGC 3367
We report the gross properties of the velocity field of the barred spiral
galaxy NGC 3367. The following values were found: inclination with respect to
the plane of the sky, i=30 deg; position angle (PA) of receding semi major axis
PA=51 and systemic velocity V(sys)=3032 km/s. Large velocity dispersion are
observed of upt o 120 km/s in the nuclear region, of up to 70 km/s near the
eastern bright sources just beyond the edge of the stellar bar where three
spiral arms seem to start and in the western bright sources at about 10 kpc.
Deviations from normal circular velocities are observed from all the disk but
mainly from the semi circle formed by the string of south western Halpha
sources. An estimate of the dynamical mass is M(dyn)=2x10^11 Msolar.Comment: Accepted to be published in May 2001 issue in the A.J. 19 pages, 7

X-ray emission and dynamics from large diameter superbubbles: The case of N 70 superbubble
The morphology, dynamics and thermal X-ray emission of the superbubble N70 is
studied by means of 3D hydrodynamical simulations, carried out with the
{\sc{yguaz\'u-a}} code. We have considered different scenarios: the superbubble
being the product of a single supernova remnant, of the stellar winds from an
OB association, or the result of the joint action of stellar winds and a
supernova event. Our results show that, in spite that all scenarios produce
bubbles with the observed physical size, only those where the bubble is driven
by stellar winds and a SN event are successful to explain the general
morphology, dynamics and the X-ray luminosity of N70. Our models predict
temperatures in excess of at the interior of the superbubble,
however the density is too low and the emission in thermal X-ray above is too faint to be detected.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, ApJ accepte
