    Measurement of volatile organic compounds in sediments of the Scheldt estuary and the southern North Sea

    The concentrations and distribution of 13 priority volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were determined in sediments of the Scheldt estuary and the Belgian continental shelf, using a modified Tekmar LSC 2000 purge-and-trap system coupled to GC-MS. The method allows a sample intake of up to 50 g wet weight and detection limits are between 0.003 ng/g (tetrachloromethane) and 0.16 ng/g (m- and p-xylene). The repeatability (n = 5) varied between 4% (benzene) and 17% (toluene) and the recoveries ranged from 59% (1,1-dichloroethane) to 99% (tetrachloromethane). Because of the nature of the contaminants, special attention was paid to analyte losses and contamination of the samples during storage aboard the research vessel. Spiked sediment samples were prepared in the laboratory and stored aboard under the same conditions as the environmental samples. The recoveries for these samples varied between 94 and 130%, which suggests that storage had no adverse effect on the samples. No detectable VOC concentrations were found for most of the sampling stations. However, in the Antwerp harbour area, significant concentrations of VOCs were found. The sorption behaviour as predicted from laboratory equilibrium partitioning experiments gives an indication of the in situ partitioning behaviour of VOCs. Although VOCs in sediments should, in general, not be regarded as a major problem in the marine environment, high local concentrations may be a cause of concern

    Assessment of processing technologies which may improve the nutritional composition of dairy products – Overview of progress

    Among consumers there is a growing demand for food products with a natural nutritional-physiological advantage over comparable conventional products. As part of an EU funded project, ALP is examining the possible impact of processing on nutritionally valuable milk components, using the example of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA). The extent to which processing influences the CLA content of the end product was determined by literature research and own investigations of organic and conventional butter. Furthermore, new chemical, sensory-based and bio crystallization methods were evaluated by ALP and the University of Kassel to determine the oxidation stability of butter. In a further step the storage stability of CLA enriched and conventional butter was examined and the different methods will be compared. As a third objective a process for low-input CLA enrichment of milk fat (with a focus on alpine butter) has been developed. Since the process selected for the work is a physical enrichment process, it is accepted by international organic farming and food groups. Among the many benefits ascribed to CLA, it is believed to be an effective agent against cancer. The demand for foods with properties that promote human health is growing. The dairy industry has the opportunity to meet this demand by developing new dairy products with a nutritional-physiological function for the functional food market

    Action research and democracy

    This contribution explores the relationship between research and learning democracy. Action research is seen as being compatible with the orientation of educational and social work research towards social justice and democracy. Nevertheless, the history of action research is characterized by a tension between democracy and social engineering. In the social-engineering approach, action research is conceptualized as a process of innovation aimed at a specific Bildungsideal. In a democratic approach action research is seen as research based on cooperation between research and practice. However, the notion of democratic action research as opposed to social engineering action research needs to be theorized. So called democratic action research involving the implementation by the researcher of democracy as a model and as a preset goal, reduces cooperation and participation into instruments to reach this goal, and becomes a type of social engineering in itself. We argue that the relationship between action research and democracy is in the acknowledgment of the political dimension of participation: ‘a democratic relationship in which both sides exercise power and shared control over decision-making as well as interpretation’. This implies an open research design and methodology able to understand democracy as a learning process and an ongoing experiment
