    A supermassive binary black hole with triple disks

    Hierarchical structure formation inevitably leads to the formation of supermassive binary black holes (BBHs) with a sub-parsec separation in galactic nuclei. However, to date there has been no unambiguous detection of such systems. In an effort to search for potential observational signatures of supermassive BBHs, we performed high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of two black holes in a binary of moderate eccentricity surrounded by a circumbinary disk. Building on our previous work, which has shown that gas can periodically transfer from the circumbinary disk to the black holes when the binary is on an eccentric orbit, the current set of simulations focuses on the formation of the individual accretion disks, their evolution and mutual interaction, and the predicted radiative signature. The variation in mass transfer with orbital phase from the circumbinary disk induces periodic variations in the light curve of the two accretion disks at ultraviolet wavelengths, but not in the optical or near-infrared. Searches for this signal offer a promising method to detect supermassive BBHs.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 16 pages, 11 figures.     Theoretical study of molecular electronic excitations and optical transitions of C60

    We report results on ab initio calculations of excited states of the fullerene molecule by using configuration interaction (CI) approach with singly excited determinants (SCI). We have used both the experimental geometry and the one optimized by the density functional method and worked with basis sets at the cc-pVTZ and aug-cc-pVTZ level. Contrary to the early SCI semiempirical calculations, we find that two lowest 1T1u1Ag^1 T_{1u} \leftarrow {}^1 A_g electron optical lines are situated at relatively high energies of ~5.8 eV (214 nm) and ~6.3 eV (197 nm). These two lines originate from two 1T1u1Ag^1 T_{1u} \leftarrow {}^1 A_g transitions: from HOMO to (LUMO+1) (6hu3t1g6h_u \to 3t_{1g}) and from (HOMO--1) to LUMO (10hg7t1u10h_g \to 7t_{1u}). The lowest molecular excitation, which is the 13T2g1 ^3 T_{2g} level, is found at ~2.5 eV. Inclusion of doubly excited determinants (SDCI) leads only to minor corrections to this picture. We discuss possible assignment of absorption bands at energies smaller than 5.8 eV (or λ\lambda larger than 214 nm).Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, 9 Table

    Continuous optical loading of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in the Thomas-Fermi regime

    We discuss the optical loading of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the Thomas-Fermi regime. The condensate is loaded via spontaneous emission from a reservoir of excited-state atoms. By means of a master equation formalism, we discuss the modification of the condensate temperature during the loading. We identify the threshold temperature, TthT_{th}, above (below) which the loading process leads to cooling (heating), respectively. The consequences of our analysis for the continuous loading of an atom laser are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    The open XXZ-chain: Bosonisation, Bethe ansatz and logarithmic corrections

    We calculate the bulk and boundary parts of the free energy for an open spin-1/2 XXZ-chain in the critical regime by bosonisation. We identify the cutoff independent contributions and determine their amplitudes by comparing with Bethe ansatz calculations at zero temperature T. For the bulk part of the free energy we find agreement with Lukyanov's result [Nucl.Phys.B 522, 533 (1998)]. In the boundary part we obtain a cutoff independent term which is linear in T and determines the temperature dependence of the boundary susceptibility in the attractive regime for T1T\ll 1. We further show that at particular anisotropies where contributions from irrelevant operators with different scaling dimensions cross, logarithmic corrections appear. We give explicit formulas for these terms at those anisotropies where they are most important. We verify our results by comparing with extensive numerical calculations based on a numerical solution of the T=0 Bethe ansatz equations, the finite temperature Bethe ansatz equations in the quantum-transfer matrix formalism, and the density-matrix renormalisation group applied to transfer matrices.Comment: 35 pages, 8 figure

    Quantum Simulation of Quantum Field Theories in Trapped Ions

    We propose the quantum simulation of a fermion and an antifermion field modes interacting via a bosonic field mode, and present a possible implementation with two trapped ions. This quantum platform allows for the scalable add-up of bosonic and fermionic modes, and represents an avenue towards quantum simulations of quantum field theories in perturbative and nonperturbative regimes.Comment: To be published in Physical Review Letter

    Local magnetic structure due to inhomogeneity of interaction in S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chain

    We study the magnetic properties of S=1/2S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with inhomogeneity of interaction. Using a quantum Monte Carlo method and an exact diagonalization method, we study bond-impurity effect in the uniform S=1/2S=1/2 chain and also in the bond-alternating chain. Here `bond impurity' means a bond with strength different from those in the bulk or a defect in the alternating order. Local magnetic structures induced by bond impurities are investigated both in the ground state and at finite temperatures, calculating the local magnetization, the local susceptibility and the local field susceptibility. We also investigate the force acting between bond impurities and find the force generally attractive.Comment: 15pages, 34figure

    Long-Term Outcome of an HIV-Treatment Programme in Rural Africa: Viral Suppression despite Early Mortality

    Objective. To define the long-term (2–4 years) clinical and virological outcome of an antiretroviral treatment (ART) programme in rural South Africa. Methods. We performed a retrospective observational cohort study, including 735 patients who initiated ART. Biannual monitoring, including HIV-RNA testing, was performed. Primary endpoint was patient retention; virological suppression (HIV-RNA < 50 copies/mL) and failure (HIV-RNA > 1000 copies/mL) were secondary endpoints. Moreover, possible predictors of treatment failure were analyzed. Results. 63% of patients (466/735) have a fully suppressed HIV-RNA, a median of three years after treatment initiation. Early mortality was high: 14% died within 3 months after treatment start. 16% of patients experienced virological failure, but only 4% was switched to second-line ART. Male gender and a low performance score were associated with treatment failure; immunological failure was a poor predictor of virological failure. Conclusions. An “all or nothing” phenomenon was observed in this rural South African ART programme: high early attrition, but good virological control in those remaining in care. Continued efforts are needed to enrol patients earlier. Furthermore, the observed viro-immunological dissociation emphasises the need to make HIV-RNA testing more widely available
