State of the field: digital history
Computing and the use of digital sources and resources is an everyday and essential practice in current academic scholarship. The present article gives a concise overview of approaches and methods within digital historical scholarship, focussing on the question: How have the Digital Humanities evolved and what has that evolution brought to historical scholarship? We begin by discussing techniques in which data are generated and machine searchable, such as OCR/HTR, born-digital archives, computer vision, scholarly editions, and Linked Data. In the second section, we provide examples of how data is made more accessible through quantitative text and network analysis. We close with a section on the need for hermeneutics and data-awareness in digital historical scholarship.
The technologies described in this article have had varying degrees of effect on historical scholarship, usually in indirect ways. For example, technologies such as OCR and search engines may not be directly visible in a historical argument; however, these technologies do shape how historians interact with sources and whether sources can be accessed at all. It is with this article that we aim to start to take stock of the digital approaches and methods used in historical scholarship which may serve as starting points for scholars to understand the digital turn in the field and how and when to implement such approaches in their work
Micronutrient Status of Critically Ill Patients with COVID-19 Pneumonia
Micronutrient deficiencies can develop in critically ill patients, arising from factors such as decreased intake, increased losses, drug interactions, and hypermetabolism. These deficiencies may compromise important immune functions, with potential implications for patient outcomes. Alternatively, micronutrient blood levels may become low due to inflammation-driven redistribution rather than consumption. This explorative pilot study investigates blood micronutrient concentrations during the first three weeks of ICU stay in critically ill COVID-19 patients and evaluates the impact of additional micronutrient administration. Moreover, associations between inflammation, disease severity, and micronutrient status were explored. We measured weekly concentrations of vitamins A, B6, D, and E; iron; zinc; copper; selenium; and CRP as a marker of inflammation state and the SOFA score indicating disease severity in 20 critically ill COVID-19 patients during three weeks of ICU stay. Half of the patients received additional (intravenous) micronutrient administration. Data were analyzed with linear mixed models and Pearsonâs correlation coefficient. High deficiency rates of vitamins A, B6, and D; zinc; and selenium (50â100%) were found at ICU admission, along with low iron status. After three weeks, vitamins B6 and D deficiencies persisted, and iron status remained low. Plasma levels of vitamins A and E, zinc, and selenium improved. No significant differences in micronutrient levels were found between patient groups. Negative correlations were identified between the CRP level and levels of vitamins A and E, iron, transferrin, zinc, and selenium. SOFA scores negatively correlated with vitamin D and selenium levels. Our findings reveal high micronutrient deficiency rates at ICU admission. Additional micronutrient administration did not enhance levels or expedite their increase. Spontaneous increases in vitamins A and E, zinc, and selenium levels were associated with inflammation resolution, suggesting that observed low levels may be attributed, at least in part, to redistribution rather than true deficiencies.</p

This paper discusses best practices for sharing and reusing Ground Truth in Handwritten Text Recognition infrastructures, and ways to reference and acknowledge contributions to the creation and enrichment of data within these Machine Learning systems. We discuss how one can publish Ground Truth data in a repository and, subsequently, inform others. Furthermore, we suggest appropriate citation methods for HTR data, models, and contributions made by volunteers. Moreover, when using digitised sources (digital facsimiles), it becomes increasingly important to distinguish between the physical object and the digital collection. These topics all relate to the proper acknowledgement of labour put into digitising, transcribing, and sharing Ground Truth HTR data. This also points to broader issues surrounding the use of Machine Learning in archival and library contexts, and how the community should begin toacknowledge and record both contributions and data provenance

Introduction: The Early Modern State: Drivers, Beneficiaries, and Discontents
During the early-modern period, the capacity of European states to raise finances, wage wars, make their own and far away populations subjects, and exert bureaucratic power over a variety of areas of social life increased dramatically. Nevertheless, these changes were far less absolute and definitive than the literature on the rise of the âmodern stateâ once held. While war expanded the boundaries of the emerging fiscal military states of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, rulers remained highly dependent on negotiations with competing elite groups and private networks of contractors and financial intermediaries. Attempts to increase control over subjects often resulted in popular resistance, limiting and influencing the direction of the development of state institutions. Marjolein ât Hart has been and remains in the front lines of developing this new approach challenging a unilineal view of the transformation of European states. Starting from her innovative work on taxation, state finance, and the economics of warfare in the Low Countries during and after the âDutch Wars of Independenceâ, she has contributed significantly to the literature on European state formation and extra-European expansion in a comparative perspective. This introduction offers an overview of the scholarly career of ât Hart, and places the contributions that follow in the context of her work
