Computer Voices / Speaking Machines
Diamond suggests that the works made specifically for this exhibition–an audiovisual installation by J. Robert and É. Morin, and an installation incorporating computer networks by D. Rokeby – focus on the interface between human voice and computer technology. Ghaznavi’s essay on selected works by the artists foregrounds issues of community, space and meaning (especially as they relate to viewer participation). Includes artists’ statements. Biographical notes. 8 bibl. ref

Beyond Electronics
Amundson examines changes in artists' relation to technology, going from an interest in the possibilities of the medium itself to an examination of its social consequences. The history of electronically-based art, as well as ten artists' use of the medium, are commented upon. Includes a diskette with a bibliography and texts, transcripts of a panel discussion, and an extensive bibliography comprising nearly 300 references. Biographical notes
Engaging the Virtual
In his descriptive analysis of works by nine artists, Porter attempts to define how new media engage the “virtual” in ways that are different from traditional art making. He calls attention to how the use of new media in art privileges “presencing” over representation and transforms the technology’s “remote presencing” into the “immediate virtual.” Includes artists’ statements. Biographical notes. 3 bibl. ref
