Forward Jets and Energy Flow in Hadronic Collisions
We observe that at the Large Hadron Collider, using forward + central
detectors, it becomes possible for the first time to carry out calorimetric
measurements of the transverse energy flow due to "minijets" accompanying
production of two jets separated by a large rapidity interval. We present
parton-shower calculations of energy flow observables in a high-energy
factorized Monte Carlo framework, designed to take into account QCD logarithmic
corrections both in the large rapidity interval and in the hard transverse
momentum. Considering events with a forward and a central jet, we examine the
energy flow in the interjet region and in the region away from the jets. We
discuss the role of these observables to analyze multiple parton collision
effects.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. Version2: added results on azimuthal

Restoration of factorization for low hadron hadroproduction
We discuss the applicability of the factorization theorem to low-
hadron production in hadron-hadron collision in a simple toy model, which
involves only scalar particles and gluons. It has been shown that the
factorization for high- hadron hadroproduction is broken by soft gluons in
the Glauber region, which are exchanged among a transverse-momentum-dependent
(TMD) parton density and other subprocesses of the collision. We explain that
the contour of a loop momentum can be deformed away from the Glauber region at
low , so the above residual infrared divergence is factorized by means of
the standard eikonal approximation. The factorization is then restored in
the sense that a TMD parton density maintains its universality. Because the
resultant Glauber factor is independent of hadron flavors, experimental
constraints on its behavior are possible. The factorization can also be
restored for the transverse single-spin asymmetry in hadron-hadron collision at
low in a similar way, with the residual infrared divergence being
factorized into the same Glauber factor.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, version to appear in EPJ

Is the deinstitutionalisation of alternative care a ‘wicked problem’? A qualitative study exploring the perceptions of child welfare practitioners and policy actors in Thailand
This study examined deinstitutionalisation in Thailand. Qualitative interviews were conducted with a total of 27 child welfare practitioners and policy actors to explore their perceptions of Thai alternative care provision. Findings show that participants perceive deinstitutionalisation as a complex policy challenge. Some felt that the institutions were necessary in order to meet demand, while others felt that cultural barriers prevent a shift to family-based approaches, such as foster care. However, data suggest that it would be difficult to characterise deinstitutionalisation as a ‘wicked policy problem’ as participants were hopeful for change, citing increased family- strengthening policies alongside efforts to implement foster care

Mesodermal fate decisions of a stem cell: the Wnt switch
Stem cells are a powerful resource for cell-based transplantation therapies in osteodegenerative disorders, but before some kinds of stem cells can be applied clinically, several aspects of their expansion and differentiation need to be better controlled. Wnt molecules and members of the Wnt signaling cascade have been ascribed a role in both these processes in vitro as well as normal development in vivo. However some results are controversial. In this review we will present the hypothesis that both canonical and non-canonical signaling are involved in mesenchymal cell fate regulation, such as adipogenesis, chondrogenesis and osteogenesis, and that in vitro it is a timely switch between the two that specifies the identity of the differentiating cell. We will specifically focus on the in vitro differentiation of adipocytes, chondrocytes and osteoblasts contrasting embryonic and mesenchymal stem cells as well as the role of Wnts in mesenchymal fate specification during embryogenesis
