Towards the reflective science communication practitioner

The practice of science communication is fundamentally changing. This requires science communication practitioners to continuously adapt their practice to an ever-changing ecosystem and highlights the importance of reflective practice for science communication. In this study, we supported 21 science communication practitioners in developing a reflective practice. Our study shows that reflective practice enabled practitioners in becoming aware of their own stance towards science or assumptions regarding audiences (single-loop learning), underlying and sometimes conflicting values or worldviews present in science communication situations (double-loop learning), and facilitated practitioners to adapt their practice accordingly. Triple-loop learning, allowing practitioners to fundamentally rethink and transform their mode of science communication, was less observed. We argue that reflective practice contributes to opening-up public conversations on science — including a conversation on underlying values, worldviews, and emotions, next to communicating scientific facts

A comparison of two methods of quantifying masticatory pressures developed under dentures with variable occlusal widths

Pressures developed during mastication with removable dental prostheses have beer quantified by two methods. This pilot study (1) compares the peak pressure method of pressure quantification with the integrated curve method of quantification and (2) continues the exploration of the effect of the width of the occlusal table on pressures developed under dentures. A set of specially designed experimental dentures was constructed for one individual. The mandibular experimental denture contained a series of pressure transducers by which masticatory pressures were recorded. These pressures were monitored between the denture base and the residual ridge tissues. Several interchangeable posterior occlusal segments, varying only in the width of the occlusal table, were fabricated for the opposing maxillary denture. Masticatory pressure and total ridge pressure were quantified by the integrated curve method and the peak pressure method. Both methods indicated a direct relationship between masticatory pressures produced and the width of the occlusal table. Alexithymia, but not Autism Spectrum Disorder, may be Related to the Production of Emotional Facial Expressions

Background A prominent diagnostic criterion of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) relates to the abnormal or diminished use of facial expressions. Yet little is known about the mechanisms that contribute to this feature of ASD. Methods We showed children with and without ASD emotionally charged video clips in order to parse out individual differences in spontaneous production of facial expressions using automated facial expression analysis software. Results Using hierarchical multiple regression, we sought to determine whether alexithymia (characterized by difficulties interpreting one’s own feeling states) contributes to diminished facial expression production. Across groups, alexithymic traits—but not ASD traits, IQ, or sex—were associated with quantity of facial expression production. Conclusions These results accord with a growing body of research suggesting that many emotion processing abnormalities observed in ASD may be explained by co-occurring alexithymia. Developmental and clinical considerations are discussed, and it is argued that alexithymia is an important but too often ignored trait associated with ASD that may have implications for subtyping individuals on the autism spectrum

Opgraving van de stolpboerderij Mariënveld op Noordervaart 58 bij Stompetoren in 2019 (19ST-NDV)

In 2019 is door de vakgroep archeologie van de gemeente Alkmaar een klein archeologisch onderzoek uitgevoerd bij de boerderij Mariënveld op Noordervaart 58 in Stompetoren. De aanleiding tot het onderzoek was geplande nieuwbouw op dit perceel. De Noordervaart is al sinds de ontginning van de Schermerpolder in 1635 een belangrijke as waaraan de eerste boerderijen gelegen waren. Zo ook op dit perceel waar al op een kaart van Dou uit 1680 en op de Kadastrale Minuut van 1817 een boerderij is weergegeven op de plaats van de 20ste eeuwse boerderij. Na de sloop tot maaiveld is er tussen de 20ste-eeuwse funderingen een archeologisch onderzoek verricht. De eerste aanlegfase is van omstreeks 1640/1650 en begint met een dikke laag grijze kleikluiten van bijna 1 meter dik. Hierop was een stolpboerderij gebouwd, waarvan funderingen en één van de vier poeren van het vierkant zijn gevonden. De andere drie poeren en veel muurwerk zijn verdwenen bij bouwactiviteiten in de 19de en 20ste eeuw. Omstreeks 1720/1750 en eind 19de/begin 20ste eeuw werden ingrijpende verbouwingen uitgevoerd, vermoedelijk vanwege verzakkingen van het muurwerk. Het gebouw was vermoedelijk van het type Westfriese stolp, met de voorzijde aan de noordkant gericht op de weg langs de Noordervaart: het woongedeelte aan de westkant, een kaaskelder in het midden en aan de oostkant ernaast de dors. Achter aan de westkant had de stolp een ‘staart’ als verlengstuk van de koestal. In het tweede kwart van de 20ste eeuw werd een nieuwe boerderij gebouwd met een bescheiden woonhuisje en een forse schuur of loods. Deze zijn in 2019-2020 op hun beurt weer vervangen door een vrijstaand woonhuis
