Study of Paclitaxel-Treated HeLa Cells by Differential Electrical Impedance Flow Cytometry

    Get PDF
This work describes the electrical investigation of paclitaxel-treated HeLa cells using a custom-made microfluidic biosensor for whole cell analysis in continuous flow. We apply the method of differential electrical impedance spectroscopy to treated HeLa cells in order to elucidate the changes in electrical properties compared with non-treated cells. We found that our microfluidic system was able to distinguish between treated and non-treated cells. Furthermore, we utilize a model for electrical impedance spectroscopy in order to perform a theoretical study to clarify our results. This study focuses on investigating the changes in the electrical properties of the cell membrane caused by the effect of paclitaxel. We observe good agreement between the model and the obtained results. This establishes the proof-of-concept for the application in cell drug therapy

Connecting open data to published articles in the Carolina Digital Repository

How easy is it to find the publications associated with locally deposited datasets? At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill we discovered it was not always easy. In this talk, we will discuss our efforts to improve these links and how we leverage our institution’s open access policy to ensure free access to publications linked to locally held data

Toward an Evidence-Based Definition and Classification of Carbohydrate Food Quality: An Expert Panel Report.

(Article Abstract) Carbohydrate-containing crops provide the bulk of dietary energy worldwide. In addition to their various carbohydrate forms (sugars, starches, fibers) and ratios, these foods may also contain varying amounts and combinations of proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, prebiotics, and anti-nutritional factors that may impact diet quality and health. Currently, there is no standardized or unified way to assess the quality of carbohydrate foods for the overall purpose of improving diet quality and health outcomes, creating an urgent need for the development of metrics and tools to better define and classify high-quality carbohydrate foods. The present report is based on a series of expert panel meetings and a scoping review of the literature focused on carbohydrate quality indicators and metrics produced over the last 10 years. The report outlines various approaches to assessing food quality, and proposes next steps and principles for developing improved metrics for assessing carbohydrate food quality. The expert panel concluded that a composite metric based on nutrient profiling methods featuring inputs such as carbohydrate–fiber–sugar ratios, micronutrients, and/or food group classification could provide useful and informative measures for guiding researchers, policymakers, industry, and consumers towards a better understanding of carbohydrate food quality and overall healthier diets. The identification of higher quality carbohydrate foods could improve evidence-based public health policies and programming—such as the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans

The significance of Immanuel Kant’s philosophy of education towards the philippine education system K-12 education program

Kant stressed on physical education. For Kant, the positive part of physical education is the culture of the school. In school curriculum includes skills training, discretion, and morality which help in the development of the general mental abilities of a child. In this facet, this study has analysed and examined the significance of Immanuel Kant’s philosophy of education so as to gain understanding towards the modern educational system which is the K-12 Program. In the K-12 Program, it has been mandated that all pupils entering Grade 1 should have compulsory undergone kindergarten or pre-school, and the secondary level will add two more years, which is now existing as the senior high school. While considering the fact that significant progress has been made in the Philippine Educational System when the implementation Basic Education Act of 2013 (Republic Act 10533), or most commonly referred to as K-12 Program starting the school year 2012-2013 which is fully implemented in the country, in this paper the researchers argue that there is indeed significance in Immanuel Kant’s educational theory towards the K-12 program in the sphere of Philippine education system

Heterogeneous associations between smoking and a wide range of initial presentations of cardiovascular disease in 1937360 people in England: lifetime risks and implications for risk prediction.

BACKGROUND: It is not known how smoking affects the initial presentation of a wide range of chronic and acute cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), nor the extent to which associations are heterogeneous. We estimated the lifetime cumulative incidence of 12 CVD presentations, and examined associations with smoking and smoking cessation. METHODS: Cohort study of 1.93 million people aged ≥30years, with no history of CVD, in 1997-2010. Individuals were drawn from linked electronic health records in England, covering primary care, hospitalizations, myocardial infarction (MI) registry and cause-specific mortality (the CALIBER programme). RESULTS: During 11.6 million person-years of follow-up, 114859 people had an initial non-fatal or fatal CVD presentation. By age 90 years, current vs never smokers' lifetime risks varied from 0.4% vs 0.2% for subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), to 8.9% vs 2.6% for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Current smoking showed no association with cardiac arrest or sudden cardiac death [hazard ratio (HR)=1.04, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.91-1.19).The strength of association differed markedly according to disease type: stable angina (HR=1.08, 95% CI 1.01-1.15),transient ischaemic attack (HR=1.41, 95% CI 1.28-1.55), unstable angina (HR=1.54, 95% CI 1.38-1.72), intracerebral haemorrhage (HR=1.61, 95% CI 1.37-1.89), heart failure (HR=1.62, 95% CI 1.47-1.79), ischaemic stroke (HR=1.90, 95% CI 1.72-2.10), MI (HR=2.32, 95% CI 2.20-2.45), SAH (HR= 2.70, 95% CI 2.27-3.21), PAD (HR=5.16, 95% CI 4.80-5.54) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) (HR=5.18, 95% CI 4.61-5.82). Population-attributable fractions were lower for women than men for unheralded coronary death, ischaemic stroke, PAD and AAA. Ten years after quitting smoking, the risks of PAD, AAA (in men) and unheralded coronary death remained increased (HR=1.36, 1.47 and 2.74, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The heterogeneous associations of smoking with different CVD presentations suggests different underlying mechanisms and have important implications for research, clinical screening and risk prediction

the DCSIP Advisory Board, for financially supporting this evaluation to allow us to meet our legislative mandate to evaluate the Youthful Offender System. We would like to thank all those who assisted us in this research effort. We are especially grateful for the assistance of the administrators and staff of the Youthful Offender System, who spent time talking with us about the program and answering our interview questions. We are particularly grateful to Pam Ploughe who arranged interviews, program observations, and access to other documentation about the program. We are grateful to the many, many other individuals who were interviewed for this project including current and former state legislators, Department of Corrections and Division of Youth Services Staff, and other individuals involved with the program, including those serving offenders in Phase III in the community. Also, we would like to thank the offenders we interviewed and the families of offenders who took the time to provide input through our focus group. These contributions were invaluable to the research. Finally, we would like to thank Heather Cameron, Nicole Hetz, Kerry Lowden, Diane Pasini-Hill, and Suzanne Gonzalez Woodburn from the Office of Research and Statistics for their contributions to the design, data collection and management of this study. Thanks to Linda Harrison for her work with the complicated electronic files. As always, we would like to thank our Divisio
